Towards the Standard Model spectrum from elliptic Calabi-Yau
We show that it is possible to construct supersymmetric three-generation
models of Standard Model gauge group in the framework of non-simply-connected
elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau, without section but with a bi-section. The
fibrations on a cover Calabi-Yau, where the model has 6 generations of SU(5)
and the bundle is given via the spectral cover description, use a different
description of the elliptic fibre which leads to more than one global section.
We present two examples of a possible cover Calabi-Yau with a free involution:
one is a fibre product of rational elliptic surfaces ; another example is
an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface. There we give the necessary
amount of chiral matter by turning on in the bundles a further parameter,
related to singularities of the fibration and the branching of the spectral
cover.Comment: 31 pages, 1 eps-figure, reference added, bundle parameters for dP9

AI Solutions for MDS: Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Misuse Detection and Localisation in Telecommunication Environments
This report considers the application of Articial Intelligence (AI) techniques to
the problem of misuse detection and misuse localisation within telecommunications
environments. A broad survey of techniques is provided, that covers inter alia
rule based systems, model-based systems, case based reasoning, pattern matching,
clustering and feature extraction, articial neural networks, genetic algorithms, arti
cial immune systems, agent based systems, data mining and a variety of hybrid
approaches. The report then considers the central issue of event correlation, that
is at the heart of many misuse detection and localisation systems. The notion of
being able to infer misuse by the correlation of individual temporally distributed
events within a multiple data stream environment is explored, and a range of techniques,
covering model based approaches, `programmed' AI and machine learning
paradigms. It is found that, in general, correlation is best achieved via rule based approaches,
but that these suffer from a number of drawbacks, such as the difculty of
developing and maintaining an appropriate knowledge base, and the lack of ability
to generalise from known misuses to new unseen misuses. Two distinct approaches
are evident. One attempts to encode knowledge of known misuses, typically within
rules, and use this to screen events. This approach cannot generally detect misuses
for which it has not been programmed, i.e. it is prone to issuing false negatives.
The other attempts to `learn' the features of event patterns that constitute normal
behaviour, and, by observing patterns that do not match expected behaviour, detect
when a misuse has occurred. This approach is prone to issuing false positives,
i.e. inferring misuse from innocent patterns of behaviour that the system was not
trained to recognise. Contemporary approaches are seen to favour hybridisation,
often combining detection or localisation mechanisms for both abnormal and normal
behaviour, the former to capture known cases of misuse, the latter to capture
unknown cases. In some systems, these mechanisms even work together to update
each other to increase detection rates and lower false positive rates. It is concluded
that hybridisation offers the most promising future direction, but that a rule or state
based component is likely to remain, being the most natural approach to the correlation
of complex events. The challenge, then, is to mitigate the weaknesses of
canonical programmed systems such that learning, generalisation and adaptation
are more readily facilitated
Quantum Mechanical Properties of Bessel Beams
Bessel beams are studied within the general framework of quantum optics. The
two modes of the electromagnetic field are quantized and the basic dynamical
operators are identified. The algebra of these operators is analyzed in detail;
it is shown that the operators that are usually associated to linear momentum,
orbital angular momentum and spin do not satisfy the algebra of the translation
and rotation group. In particular, what seems to be the spin is more similar to
the helicity. Some physical consequences of these results are examined.Comment: 17 pages, no figures. New versio
Nucleon-Quarkonium Elastic Scattering and the Gluon Contribution to Nucleon Spin
It is shown that the amplitude for the scattering of a heavy quarkonium
system from a nucleon near threshold is completely determined by the fraction
of angular momentum, as well as linear momentum, carried by gluons in the
nucleon. A form for the quarkonium-nucleon non-relativistic potential is
derived.Comment: 4 pages, no figures. Author's e-mail: [email protected]
Extension Bundles and the Standard Model
We construct a new class of stable vector bundles suitable for heterotic
string compactifications. Using these we describe a novel way to derive the
fermionic matter content of the Standard Model from the heterotic string. For
this we compactify on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold X with two
sections, the B-fibration, a variant of the ordinary Weierstrass fibration,
which allows X to carry a free involution. We construct rank five vector
bundles, invariant under this involution, such that turning on a Wilson line we
obtain the Standard Model gauge group and find various three generation models.
This rank five bundle is derived from a stable rank four bundle that arises as
an extension of bundles pulled-back from the base and twisted by suitable line
bundles. We also give an account of various previous results and put the
present construction into perspective.Comment: 31 pages, harvmac, references adde

Retrieving Nuclear Information from Protons Propagating through A Thick Target
The multiple scattering of high-energy particles in a thick target is
fromulated in an impact parameter representation. A formalism similar but not
identical to that of Moliere is obtained. We show that calculations of particle
beam broadening due to multiple Coulomb scattering alone can be given in closed
form. The focus of this study is on whether or not the broadening of the
Coulomb angular distribution prevents the retrieval of nuclear-interaction
information from mesauring the angular distributions of charged partiles
scattered from a thick target. For this purpose, we study multiple scatterings
with both the nuclear and Coulomb interactions included and we do not make a
small-angle expansion. Condition for retrieving nuclear infomration from
high-energy protons propagating through a block of material are obtained.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figure
Understanding the newly observed Y(4008) by Belle
Very recently a new enhancement around 4.05 GeV was observed by Belle
experiment. In this short note, we discuss some possible assignments for this
enhancement, i.e. and molecular state. In these two
assignments, Y(4008) can decay into with comparable
branching ratio with that of . Thus one suggests
high energy experimentalists to look for Y(4008) in channel.
Furthermore one proposes further experiments to search missing channel
, and especially and
, which will be helpful to distinguish and
molecular state assignments for this new enhancement.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Typos correcte
