    The 5-kW arcjet power electronics

    The initial design and evaluation of a 5 kW arcjet power electronics breadboard which as been integrated with a modified 1 kW design laboratory arcjet is presented. A single stage, 5 kW full bridge, pulse width modulated (PWM), power converter was developed which was phase shift regulated. The converter used metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) power switches and incorporated current mode control and an integral arcjet pulse ignition circuit. The unoptimized power efficiency was 93.5 and 93.9 percent at 5 kW and 50A output at input voltages of 130 and 150V, respectively. Line and load current regulation at 50A output was within one percent. The converter provided up to 6.6 kW to the arcjet with simulated ammonia used as a propellant

    Genus Topology of the Cosmic Microwave Background from the WMAP 3-Year Data

    We have independently measured the genus topology of the temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background seen in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 3-year data. A genus analysis of the WMAP data indicates consistency with Gaussian random-phase initial conditions, as predicted by standard inflation. We set 95% confidence limits on non-linearities of -101 < f_{nl} < 107. We also find that the observed low l (l <= 8) modes show a slight anti-correlation with the Galactic foreground, but not exceeding 95% confidence, and that the topology defined by these modes is consistent with that of a Gaussian random-phase distribution (within 95% confidence).Comment: MNRAS LaTeX style (mn2e.cls), EPS and JPEG figure

    Self-Gravitating Strings In 2+1 Dimensions

    We present a family of classical spacetimes in 2+1 dimensions. Such a spacetime is produced by a Nambu-Goto self-gravitating string. Due to the special properties of three-dimensional gravity, the metric is completely described as a Minkowski space with two identified worldsheets. In the flat limit, the standard string is recovered. The formalism is developed for an open string with massive endpoints, but applies to other boundary conditions as well. We consider another limit, where the string tension vanishes in geometrical units but the end-masses produce finite deficit angles. In this limit, our open string reduces to the free-masses solution of Gott, which possesses closed timelike curves when the relative motion of the two masses is sufficiently rapid. We discuss the possible causal structures of our spacetimes in other regimes. It is shown that the induced worldsheet Liouville mode obeys ({\it classically}) a differential equation, similar to the Liouville equation and reducing to it in the flat limit. A quadratic action formulation of this system is presented. The possibility and significance of quantizing the self-gravitating string, is discussed.Comment: 55 page

    Transformation of Morphology and Luminosity Classes of the SDSS Galaxies

    We present a unified picture on the evolution of galaxy luminosity and morphology. Galaxy morphology is found to depend critically on the local environment set up by the nearest neighbor galaxy in addition to luminosity and the large scale density. When a galaxy is located farther than the virial radius from its closest neighbor, the probability for the galaxy to have an early morphological type is an increasing function only of luminosity and the local density due to the nearest neighbor (ρn\rho_n). The tide produced by the nearest neighbor is thought to be responsible for the morphology transformation toward the early type at these separations. When the separation is less than the virial radius, i.e. when ρn>ρvirial\rho_n > \rho_{\rm virial}, its morphology depends also on the neighbor's morphology and the large-scale background density over a few Mpc scales (ρ20\rho_{20}) in addition to luminosity and ρn\rho_n. The early type probability keeps increasing as ρn\rho_n increases if its neighbor is an early type. But the probability decreases as ρn\rho_n increases when the neighbor is a late type. The cold gas streaming from the late type neighbor can be the reason for the morphology transformation toward late type. The overall early-type fraction increases as ρ20\rho_{20} increases when ρn>ρvirial\rho_n > \rho_{\rm virial}. This can be attributed to the hot halo gas of the neighbor which is confined by the pressure of the ambient medium held by the background mass. We have also found that galaxy luminosity depends on ρn\rho_n, and that the isolated bright galaxies are more likely to be recent merger products.     Cosmological constant influence on cosmic string spacetime

    We investigate the line element of spacetime around a linear cosmic string in the presence of a cosmological constant. We obtain the metric and argue that it should be discarded because of asymptotic considerations. Then a time dependent and consistent form of the metric is obtained and its properties are discussed.Comment: 3 page

    Open inflation and the singular boundary

    The singularity in Hawking and Turok's model (hep-th/9802030) of open inflation has some appealing properties. We suggest that this singularity should be regularized with matter. The singular instanton can then be obtained as the limit of a family of ``no-boundary'' solutions where both the geometry and the scalar field are regular. Using this procedure, the contribution of the singularity to the Euclidean action is just 1/3 of the Gibbons-Hawking boundary term. Unrelated to this question, we also point out that gravitational backreaction improves the behaviour of scalar perturbations near the singularity. As a result, the problem of quantizing scalar perturbations and gravity waves seems to be very well posed.Comment: 7 page
