    Accurate thermal modelling of electrical machines is important for electromagnetic performance determination of a design. This study presents the impact of rotation on convective cooling of a through-ventilated motor – a design equivalent to the Tesla S 60 traction motor design. Machine temperatures after steady state with and without considering rotation effects are compared, and the influence on the machine continuous performance is investigated

    Laser pulse detection method and apparatus

    A sensor is described for detecting the difference in phase of a pair of returned light pulse components, such as the two components of a light pulse of an optical gyro. In an optic gyro, the two light components have passed in opposite directions through a coil of optical fiber, with the difference in phase of the returned light components determining the intensity of light shining on the sensor. The sensor includes a CCD (charge coupled device) that receives the pair of returned light components to generate a charge proportional to the number of photons in the received light. The amount of the charge represents the phase difference between the two light components. At a time after the transmission of the light pulse and before the expected time of arrival of the interfering light components, charge accumulating in the CCD as a result of reflections from optical components in the system, are repeatedly removed from the CCD, by transferring out charges in the CCD and dumping these charges

    A Systems Approach and Notional Response Model for Preserving the Health System during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    During any pandemic, it has long been known that local jurisdictions would need to be self-sufficient with little or no outside assistance, particularly from the federal government. While all eyes have been on California, New York, and Massachusetts, the capacities of health systems in other states have yet to be put to the test. If there are subsequent waves of COVID-19 and other jurisdictions see significant increases in disease spread, the systems used to respond will become critical.Using a review and synthesis approach, this article explores our collective experience and knowledge as it pertains to use of alternate care sites for dealing with the patient surge created by a disease outbreak. Probing the concept of alternate care site (ACS) systems reveals various types of alternate care sites that may be employed during an outbreak. The historical value of ACS models used during outbreak response are discussed. This culminates in the development of a notional response model and list of actions that should be taken by all jurisdictions as we prepare for additional waves of disease

    Gene therapy for pain: Results of a phase I clinical trial

    Objective: Preclinical evidence indicates that gene transfer to the dorsal root ganglion using replication‐defective herpes simplex virus (HSV)‐based vectors can reduce pain‐related behavior in animal models of pain. This clinical trial was carried out to assess the safety and explore the potential efficacy of this approach in humans. Methods: We conducted a multicenter, dose‐escalation, phase I clinical trial of NP2, a replication‐defective HSV‐based vector expressing human preproenkephalin ( PENK ) in subjects with intractable focal pain caused by cancer. NP2 was injected intradermally into the dermatome(s) corresponding to the radicular distribution of pain. The primary outcome was safety. As secondary measures, efficacy of pain relief was assessed using a numeric rating scale (NRS), the Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF‐MPQ), and concurrent opiate usage. Results: Ten subjects with moderate to severe intractable pain despite treatment with >200mg/day of morphine (or equivalent) were enrolled into the study. Treatment was well tolerated with no study agent‐related serious adverse events observed at any point in the study. Subjects receiving the low dose of NP2 reported no substantive change in pain. Subjects in the middle‐ and high‐dose cohorts reported pain relief as assessed by NRS and SF‐MPQ. Interpretation: Treatment of intractable pain with NP2 was well tolerated. There were no placebo controls in this relatively small study, but the dose‐responsive analgesic effects suggest that NP2 may be effective in reducing pain and warrants further clinical investigation.
