Trail Trax 2.020: Tracking the Electoral Soundscape
Trax on the Trail is a Georgia College-sponsored website devoted to the study of American presidential campaign music. The interdisciplinary team that I assembled for this project includes students as well as academic experts from the fields of political science, musicology, sociology, history, media studies, and ethnomusicology, across the U.S. and Canada. Committed to the ethos of public history, the Trax on the Trailteam develops accessible scholarship on the subject of music and elections.
I have supervised the publication of over forty essays and podcasts, collaborated with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Clinton Presidential Library to create open-access resources for educators, and developed innovative research tools for journalists and scholars. Equally committed to advancing scholarly inquiry into the function of sound in electioneering, I have presented my work in classrooms, community centers, and colleges around the country, as well as published my research in scholarly journals, including Music & Politics, American Music and the Journal of Popular Music Studies. Trax on the Trail has been cited by the BBC, The Guardian, Slate, The Boston Herald, Pacific Standard, and Elite Daily.
In order to efficiently conduct research on the 2020 soundscape and build the content for our campaign music database (Trail Trax 2.020), I allocated the Faculty Research Grant to fund two research assistants, Haley Strassburger and Sarah Griffin. The resource that we created has been valuable to scholars researching campaign music, as well as to journalists, students, educators, and others who wish to learn more about the role sound plays in shaping our opinion of presidential candidates
An Unwelcome Aspect of Life: the depiction of Old Age in Greek Vase Painting.
The subject of old age is rarely addressed in Greek vase painting and usually appears in scenes from mythology or daily life. Older men in these representations are Homeric heroes, esteemed as kings, leaders and sages who have rendered great services to society; older people are also present in scenes of everyday life – usually as fathers or child supervisors. depending on the technique of decoration, these figures were characterised mostly through hair colour (as well as thinning hair and baldness in the case of men), a stooped and frail frame or an obese one. Besides, on red-figure and white-ground vessels it was possible to render facial wrinkles. These features apply predominantly to the images of men, because due to the social ideal of kalokagathia Athenian women were usually depicted as timelessly young. The article contains an analysis of selected depictions of the elderly in vase painting in terms of their iconography and the types of scenes in which they appear, including references to the written sources
Epic Themes and Vase Painting Based on the Example of Selected Scenes Illustrating Homeric Motifs: Doloneia
The oral form of transmission of the early Greek epics allowed for the free shaping of content by the poet, whose task was to create a coherent narrative, intelligible for all the listeners, while maintaining its key feature – authenticity. This, however, lead to variability in content due to the desire to supplement, that is to show detailed presentations of events or to adapt these to local traditions. Incongruities in content between individual customary versions of these stories are illustrated in relics of vase painting. This article discusses the iconography of scenes associated with the Doloneia, book 10 of the Iliad, in reference to the contents of the epic. Based on a few examples still extant, a formal analysis was conducted on the themes of the main structure and secondary characters shown in Greek illustrations from the Archaic and Classical periods, as well as of southern Italic examples, allowing us to show how versions of the story formed at a given time and to reflect on the changes introduced
The innovation process in local development – the material, institutional, and intellectual infrastructure shaping and shaped by innovation
The purpose of the article is to define the material, institutional, and intellectual infrastructure of a region and identify the innovative processes that determine its creation. Our main research hypothesis is that the processes that influence the creation of a region’s infrastructure determine a region’s competitiveness as well. To verify these premises, we conducted a study among the residents and employees of a municipality. The research employed deductive and inductive methods and a qualitative analysis was performed. Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient and factor analysis (inference based on the modal and median values) were used in the study. The research verified the hypothesis that innovative processes influence the creation of a region’s infrastructure and that innovative processes in the studied region exhibit low dynamics, which is caused by financial and psychosocial barriers. The important role of social leaders in municipalities was identified as well, above all as regards building civic society and social activity. The added value of the article is threefold: the developed model of infrastructure construction in the material, institutional, and intellectual dimensions of a region; recommendations for the investigated municipality; and a structured questionnaire that, together with the model, can be used for research in municipalities
Trax on the Trail
Trax on the Trail is a website where scholars, educators, journalists, students, and the general public can learn about American presidential campaign music and gain insight into how sound participates in forming candidate identity.
Our interdisciplinary team includes academic experts from the fields of political science, musicology, sociology, history, communications, and ethnomusicology, as well as industry professionals and students. We will follow the 2016 presidential campaign as it unfolds and post original scholarship that addresses the creative use of music and sound on the campaign trail
An integrated approach to river valley revitalisation
Rivers have always been a unique space in urban landscapes. Regrettably, the river-town relationship was disturbed in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century as industrial plants and districts were established at banks, which changed the urban structure. This resulted in degradation of riverscapes among other things. Today, attempts are made to revitalise the areas and use them for ecological, recreational, and other purposes. The paper presents an integrated approach to river valley revitalisation – demonstrated on the Skawinka river, flowing through Skawina, an industrial town in Poland. An integrated approach could indicate local development possibilities of river valley and thereby strengthen the competitiveness of the area. The study employed the Landscape and Hydromorphological Assessment of River Valleys Method, focusing on hydromorphological, landscape, and integrated factors. Proposing an integrated approach to the Skawinka river valley revitalisation presents a procedure that indicates possibilities for local development and thereby strengthening the competitiveness of this region. The guidelines for the revitalisation project for this river indicate that if the river was made generally accessible, it may become an important location for social and economic life. At the same time it might have a recreational and educational function
Scipio African Elder and Spanish Women. Myth of Continentia Scipionis and its Reception in Venetian Painting in the 18th Century
Livy and Polybius note that after the conquest of New Carthage, Scipio Africanus the Elder freed Spanish hostages, among whom was Allucius’ fiancée of extraordinary beauty. Not only did Scipio not accept her as a gift, but he summoned her parents and fiancé from her country, returned her to them for free and gave away as a wedding gift the gold intended for her redemption. The motif of the “continence of Scipio”, which was a political strategy aimed at gaining allies and ensuring their friendship with the Romans, was widely reflected in literature, opera and, above all, painting, starting from the sixteenth century. In the article we present works created in the Venetian artistic environment that have not been analyzed before
