    KPP reaction-diffusion equations with a non-linear loss inside a cylinder

    We consider in this paper a reaction-diffusion system in presence of a flow and under a KPP hypothesis. While the case of a single-equation has been extensively studied since the pioneering Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piskunov paper, the study of the corresponding system with a Lewis number not equal to 1 is still quite open. Here, we will prove some results about the existence of travelling fronts and generalized travelling fronts solutions of such a system with the presence of a non-linear spacedependent loss term inside the domain. In particular, we will point out the existence of a minimal speed, above which any real value is an admissible speed. We will also give some spreading results for initial conditions decaying exponentially at infinity

    A Multidimensional Conceptualization of Environmental Velocity

    Environmental velocity has emerged as an important concept but remains theoretically underdeveloped, particularly with respect to its multidimensionality. In response, we develop a framework that examines the variations in velocity across multiple dimensions of the environment (homology) and the causal linkages between those velocities (coupling). We then propose four velocity regimes based on different patterns of homology and coupling and argue that the conditions of each regime have important implications for organizations

    Global X-ray properties of the Orion Nebula region

    Based on the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) observation, we establish the global X-ray properties of the stellar population associated with the Orion Nebula. Three components contribute roughly equally to the integrated COUP luminosity in the hard (2-8 keV) X-ray band: several OB stars, 822 lightly obscured cool stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), and 559 heavily obscured stars. ONC stars 0.5-2 pc from the center show a spatial asymmetry consistent with violent relaxation in the stellar dynamics. The obscured COUP sources concentrate around both OMC-1 molecular cores; these small-scale structures indicate ages t < 0.1 Myr. The X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the lightly obscured sample is roughly lognormal in shape. The obscured population is deficient in lower-luminosity stars, perhaps due to localized circumstellar material. Mass-stratified XLFs show that one-third of the Orion Nebula region hard-band emission is produced by the bright O6 star theta-1 Ori C and half is produced by lower mass pre-main sequence stars with masses 0.3 < M < 3 Mo. Very low mass stars contribute little to the cluster X-ray emission. Using the hard band emission, we show that young stellar clusters like the ONC can be readily detected and resolved with Chandra across the Galactic disk, even in the presence of heavy obscuration. The Orion Nebula sample is a valuable template for studies of distant clusters. For example, the peak of the XLF shape can serve as a standard candle for a new distance measure to distant young stellar clusters, and the presence of a neon emission line complex around 1 keV can serve as a diagnostic for young stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplements, Special Issue on the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). 11 pages, 7 figures.     Compensation effects in GaN:Mg probed by Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements

Phys. 113, 103504 (2013) and may be found at https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4794094.Compensation effects in metal organic chemical vapour deposition grown GaN doped with magnesium are investigated with Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. Examining the strain sensitive E2(high) mode, an increasing compressive strain is revealed for samples with Mg-concentrations lower than 7 × 1018 cm−3. For higher Mg-concentrations, this strain is monotonically reduced. This relaxation is accompanied by a sudden decrease in crystal quality. Luminescence measurements reveal a well defined near band edge luminescence with free, donor bound, and acceptor bound excitons as well as a characteristic donor acceptor pair (DAP) luminescence. Following recent results, three acceptor bound excitons and donor acceptor pairs are identified. Along with the change of the strain, a strong modification in the luminescence of the dominating acceptor bound exciton and DAP luminescence is observed. The results from Raman spectroscopy and luminescence measurements are interpreted as fingerprints of compensation effects in GaN:Mg leading to the conclusion that compensation due to defect incorporation triggered by Mg-doping already affects the crystal properties at doping levels of around 7 × 1018 cm−3.     The pattern of underlying cause of death in patients with inflammatory bowel disease in England: a record linkage study

    Background and Aims: Numerous studies have established that mortality risk in IBD patients is higher than the general population, but the causes of death have seldom been examined. We aimed to describe causes of death in IBD. Methods: A matched cohort study using UK general practice data from Clinical Practice Research Datalink linked to death registration records. We described the distribution of causes of death among IBD patients by age at death and time since IBD diagnosis. We estimated age-specific mortality rates and hazard ratios of death in multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Results: 20,293 IBD patients were matched to 83,261 non-IBD patients. The mortality rate was 40% higher in IBD patients (2005 deaths) than in non-IBD patients (6024 deaths) (adjusted overall hazard ratio = 1.4, 95% CI = 1.4—1.5), with greater risk of death in Crohn’s disease (hazard ratio = 1.6, 1.5—1.7) than in ulcerative colitis (1.3, 1.3—1.4). Causes attributable to IBD constituted 3.7% of all deaths in ulcerative colitis and 8.3% in Crohn’s disease. Among IBD patients, death was less likely to be due to circulatory, respiratory or neoplastic diseases than non-IBD patients. In both IBD and non-IBD patients all these causes became more clinically important with advancing age, with the commonest neoplastic cause of death being lung cancer, rather than gastrointestinal cancers. Conclusion: IBD patients have an additional risk of death. Most IBD patients die of circulatory or respiratory causes, and the contribution to mortality from long-term complications of IBD are clinically less important

    Dust heating by the interstellar radiation field in models of turbulent molecular clouds

    We have calculated the radiation field, dust grain temperatures, and far infrared emissivity of numerical models of turbulent molecular clouds. When compared to a uniform cloud of the same mean optical depth, most of the volume inside the turbulent cloud is brighter, but most of the mass is darker. There is little mean attenuation from center to edge, and clumping causes the radiation field to be somewhat bluer. There is also a large dispersion, typically by a few orders of magnitude, of all quantities relative to their means. However, despite the scatter, the 850 micron emission maps are well correlated with surface density.     Electronic excitations stabilized by a degenerate electron gas in semiconductors

    Excitons in semiconductors and insulators consist of fermionic subsystems, electrons and holes, whose attractive interaction facilitates bound quasiparticles with quasi-bosonic character. In the presence of a degenerate electron gas, such excitons dissociate due to free carrier screening. Despite their absence, we found pronounced emission traces in the below-band-edge region of bulk, germanium-doped GaN up to a temperature of 100 K, mimicking sharp spectral features at high free electron concentrations (3.4E19–8.9E19 cm−3). Our interpretation of the data suggests that a degenerate, three-dimensional electron gas stabilizes a novel class of quasiparticles, which we name collexons. These many-particle complexes are formed by exchange of electrons with the Fermi gas. The potential observation of collexons and their stabilization with rising doping concentration is enabled by high crystal quality due to the almost ideal substitution of host atoms with dopants.DFG, 43659573, SFB 787: Semiconductor Nanophotonics: Materials, Models, Device

    X-rays from Microstructured Targets Heated by Femtosecond Lasers

    We have demonstrated efficient conversion of ultrashort-pulse laser energy to x rays with energies above 1 keV, using laser-produced plasmas generated on a variety of microstructured surfaces. Lithographically produced grating targets generated 0.1 mJ of kilo-electron-volt x rays, and porous gold and aluminum targets emitted 1 mJ. This represents an improvement of a factor of 100 over flat targets. The K-shell emission spectrum of porous aluminum was composed primarily of heliumlike spectral lines
