    A simple novel device for air sampling by electrokinetic capture.

    BackgroundA variety of different sampling devices are currently available to acquire air samples for the study of the microbiome of the air. All have a degree of technical complexity that limits deployment. Here, we evaluate the use of a novel device, which has no technical complexity and is easily deployable.ResultsAn air-cleaning device powered by electrokinetic propulsion has been adapted to provide a universal method for collecting samples of the aerobiome. Plasma-induced charge in aerosol particles causes propulsion to and capture on a counter-electrode. The flow of ions creates net bulk airflow, with no moving parts. A device and electrode assembly have been re-designed from air-cleaning technology to provide an average air flow of 120 lpm. This compares favorably with current air sampling devices based on physical air pumping. Capture efficiency was determined by comparison with a 0.4 μm polycarbonate reference filter, using fluorescent latex particles in a controlled environment chamber. Performance was compared with the same reference filter method in field studies in three different environments. For 23 common fungal species by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), there was 100 % sensitivity and apparent specificity of 87 %, with the reference filter taken as "gold standard." Further, bacterial analysis of 16S RNA by amplicon sequencing showed equivalent community structure captured by the electrokinetic device and the reference filter. Unlike other current air sampling methods, capture of particles is determined by charge and so is not controlled by particle mass. We analyzed particle sizes captured from air, without regard to specific analyte by atomic force microscopy: particles at least as low as 100 nM could be captured from ambient air.ConclusionsThis work introduces a very simple plug-and-play device that can sample air at a high-volume flow rate with no moving parts and collect particles down to the sub-micron range. The performance of the device is substantially equivalent to capture by pumping through a filter for microbiome analysis by quantitative PCR and amplicon sequencing

    Corporate Entrepreneurship: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained?

    Recent literature has suggested that adopting elements of the organization of independent venture capital (VC) firms may enhance the performance of corporate venture (CV) units (Chesbrough, 2000; Sahlman, 1990). This assertion has only been subject to minimal empirical research: typically restricted to small-sample qualitative studies or to examining the respective influences of independent VC firms and CV units on the performance of portfolio firms (Gompers & Lerner, 1998; Maula & Murray, 2001). A longitudinal survey of 95 CV units across three continents found mixed empirical support for the suggestion. Of the VC structures and practices investigated, strongest support was found for CV unit engagement with the VC community which was consistently associated with superior corporate venturing performance along both strategic and financial dimensions. VC-like equity-based compensation systems were not found to influence CV performance even where CV units were strongly focused on financial goals. Overall, the adoption of VC practices, partially mediated by venture unit performance, was positively associated with CV unit survival. These results suggest that selective adoption of elements of the VC model may enhance CV unit performance and survival

    Mainstreaming Mental Health Care in 42 Countries.

    Abstract-Global consensus and national policies have emphasized deinstitutionalization, or a shift in providing mental health care from institutional to community settings. Yet, psychiatric hospitals and asylums receive the majority of mental health funding in many countries, at odds with research evidence that suggests that services should be delivered in the community. Our aim is to investigate the norms, actors, and strategies that influence the uptake of deinstitutionalization internationally. Our study is informed by prior literature on management and implementation science. The success and failure of mental health care operations depend on identifying and overcoming challenges related to implementing innovations within national contexts. We surveyed 78 experts spanning 42 countries on their knowledge and experiences in expanding community-based mental health care and/or downsizing institution-based care. We also asked them about the contexts in which said methods were implemented in a country. We found that mental health care, whether it is provided in institutions or in the community, does not seem to be standardized across countries. Our analysis also showed that moving deinstitutionalization forward requires meaningful engagement of three types of actors: government officials, health care professionals, and local experts. Progress toward deinstitutionalization depends on the partnerships formed among these actors and with diverse stakeholders, which have the potential to garner resources and to scale-up pilot projects. In conclusion, different countries have adapted deinstitutionalization in ways to meet idiosyncratic situations and population needs. More attention should be given to the management and implementation strategies that are used to augment treatment and preventive services

    Student's perceptions of generic skills for effective collaborative learning relative to student achievement

    Collaborative and cooperative learning in small groups are generally considered effective learning approaches. Successful group activities, however, assume competence in a range of skills. This empirical paper seeks to identify whether undergraduate students with different levels of academic achievement have different perceptions of the relative importance of Ehrman and Dornyei's (1998) generic sub-skills, i.e. do high performing students emphasise different skills? Students in a first year management subject were surveyed. No differences were found between high achieving and low achieving students in terms of the importance that they place on the various generic sub-skills. Productivity focussed skills were considered most important followed by relationship and communication skills. The implications for preparing students for group work are considered
