Labyrinthic granular landscapes
We have numerically studied a model of granular landscape eroded by wind. We
show the appearance of labyrinthic patterns when the wind orientation turns by
. The occurence of such structures are discussed. Morever, we
introduce the density of ``defects'' as the dynamic parameter governing
the landscape evolution. A power law behavior of is found as a function
of time. In the case of wind variations, the exponent (drastically) shifts from
2 to 1. The presence of two asymptotic values of implies the

Hard X-ray techniques suitable for polymer experiments
Polymers have been studied since 1979 with 8-12 keV synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering methods and the number and sophistication of the experiments have rapidly grown ever since. More recently, new experimental techniques have been developed that use softer or harder X rays in less conventional ways. This article provides a brief overview of the possibilities of hard X-ray techniques and indicates some areas that might gain from further developments
Classification and analysis of predictable memory patterns
The verification complexity of real-time requirements in embedded systems grows exponentially with the number of applications, as resource sharing prevents independent verification using simulation-based approaches. Formal verification is a promising alternative, although its applicability is limited to systems with predictable hardware and software. SDRAM memories are common examples of essential hardware components with unpredictable timing behavior, typically preventing use of formal approaches. A predictable SDRAM controller has been proposed that provides guarantees on bandwidth and latency by dynamically scheduling memory patterns, which are statically computed sequences of SDRAM commands. However, the proposed patterns become increasingly inefficient as memories become faster, making them unsuitable for DDR3 SDRAM. This paper extends the memory pattern concept in two ways. Firstly, we introduce a burst count parameter that enables patterns to have multiple SDRAM bursts per bank, which is required for DDR3 memories to be used efficiently. Secondly, we present a classification of memory pattern sets into four categories based on the combination of patterns that cause worst-case bandwidth and latency to be provided. Bounds on bandwidth and latency are derived that apply to all pattern types and burst counts, as opposed to the single case covered by earlier work. Experimental results show that these extensions are required to support the most efficient pattern sets for many use-cases. We also demonstrate that the burst count parameter increases efficiency in presence of large requests and enables a wider range of real-time requirements to be satisfied
Impaired Postural Control Reduces Sit-to-Stand-to-Sit Performance in Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Abstract
Background: Functional activities, such as the sit-to-stand-to-sit (STSTS) task, are often impaired in individuals with chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The STSTS task places a high demand on the postural control system, which has
been shown to be impaired in individuals with COPD. It remains unknown whether postural control deficits contribute to
the decreased STSTS performance in individuals with COPD.
Methods: Center of pressure displacement was determined in 18 individuals with COPD and 18 age/gender-matched
controls during five consecutive STSTS movements with vision occluded. The total duration, as well as the duration of each
sit, sit-to-stand, stand and stand-to-sit phase was recorded.
Results: Individuals with COPD needed significantly more time to perform five consecutive STSTS movements compared to healthy controls (1966 vs. 1364 seconds, respectively; p = 0.001). The COPD group exhibited a significantly longer stand phase (p = 0.028) and stand-to-sit phase (p = 0.001) compared to the control group. In contrast, the duration of the sit phase (p = 0.766) and sit-to-stand phase (p = 0.999) was not different between groups.
Conclusions: Compared to healthy individuals, individuals with COPD needed significantly more time to complete those phases of the STSTS task that require the greatest postural control. These findings support the proposition that suboptimal postural control is an important contributor to the decreased STSTS performance in individuals with COPD
Elucidating the electrochemical activity of electrolyte-insoluble polysulfide species in lithium-sulfur batteries
The direct synthesis of Li2 S2 , a proposed solid intermediate in the discharge of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, was accomplished by treating elemental lithium with sulfur in liquid ammonia at -41?? C. The as-synthesized product was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and determined to be a mixture of crystalline Li2 S, amorphous Li2 S2, and higher-order polysulfides (Li2 Sx , x > 2). Monitored filtration followed by a tailored electrochemical approach was used to successfully remove the higher-order polysulfides and yielded a powder, which was determined by XPS to be comprised of 9 mol% insoluble polysulfide species (mainly Li2 S2 ) and 91 mol% Li2 S. This material was discharged galvanostatically in an electrochemical cell and, despite the lack of soluble polysulfide species, was shown to exhibit a discharge plateau at 2.1 V vs. Li/Li+ . This result confirmed the electrochemical reducibility of electrolyte-insoluble polysulfides in Li-S batteries. Moreover, it was determined that the reduction of solid polysulfides was confined to areas where the sulfur-sulfur bonds were in intimate contact with the conductive current collector. Finally, it was observed that commercially available Li2 S samples contain significant quantities of polysulfide-type impurities.ope
Ripple and kink dynamics
We propose a relevant modification of the Nishimori-Ouchi model [{\em Phys.
Rev. Lett.} {\bf 71}, 197 (1993)] for granular landscape erosion. We explicitly
introduce a new parameter: the angle of repose , and a new process:
avalanches. We show that the parameter leads to an asymmetry of the
ripples, as observed in natural patterns. The temporal evolution of the maximum
ripple height is limited and not linear, according to recent
observations. The ripple symmetry and the kink dynamics are studied and
