Influence of design parameters on occurence of oil whirl
Oil whirl instability is a serious problem in oil lubricated journal bearings. The phenomenon is characterized by a subsynchronous vibration of the journal within the bush and is particularly apparent in turbogenerators, aeroengines and electric motors. A review is presented of previous papers on the subject of oil whirl, and a simple theory is described which was used to aid the design of an oil whirl test rig. Predictions of the onset of oil whirl made by the theory presented were found to agree with those of previous researchers. They showed that increasing the shaft flexibility, or the lubricant viscosity, and decreasing the bearing radial clearance tended to reduce the oil whirl onset speed thus making the system more unstable
Probing Qubit Memory Errors at the Part-per-Million Level
Robust qubit memory is essential for quantum computing, both for near-term
devices operating without error correction, and for the long-term goal of a
fault-tolerant processor. We directly measure the memory error for
a Ca trapped-ion qubit in the small-error regime and find
for storage times t\lesssim50\,\mbox{ms}. This exceeds
gate or measurement times by three orders of magnitude. Using randomized
benchmarking, at t=1\,\mbox{ms} we measure ,
around ten times smaller than that extrapolated from the time,
and limited by instability of the atomic clock reference used to benchmark the

Evaporation of Compact Young Clusters near the Galactic Center
We investigate the dynamical evolution of compact young clusters (CYCs) near
the Galactic center (GC) using Fokker-Planck models. CYCs are very young (< 5
Myr), compact (< 1 pc), and only a few tens of pc away from the GC, while they
appear to be as massive as the smallest Galactic globular clusters (~10^4
Msun). A survey of cluster lifetimes for various initial mass functions,
cluster masses, and galactocentric radii is presented. Short relaxation times
due to the compactness of CYCs, and the strong tidal fields near the GC make
clusters evaporate fairly quickly. Depending on cluster parameters, mass
segregation may occur on a time scale shorter than the lifetimes of most
massive stars, which accelerates the cluster's dynamical evolution even more.
When the difference between the upper and lower mass boundaries of the initial
mass function is large enough, strongly selective ejection of lighter stars
makes massive stars dominate even in the outer regions of the cluster, so the
dynamical evolution of those clusters is weakly dependent on the lower mass
boundary. The mass bins for Fokker-Planck simulations were carefully chosen to
properly account for a relatively small number of the most massive stars. We
find that clusters with a mass <~ 2x10^4 Msun evaporate in <~ 10 Myr. A simple
calculation based on the total masses in observed CYCs and the lifetimes
obtained here indicates that the massive CYCs comprise only a fraction of the
star formation rate (SFR) in the inner bulge estimated from Lyman continuum

Initial psychological responses to influenza A, H1N1 ("Swine flu")
Background
The outbreak of the pandemic flu, Influenza A H1N1 (Swine Flu) in early 2009, provided a major challenge to health services around the world. Previous pandemics have led to stockpiling of goods, the victimisation of particular population groups, and the cancellation of travel and the boycotting of particular foods (e.g. pork). We examined initial behavioural and attitudinal responses towards Influenza A, H1N1 ("Swine flu") in the six days following the WHO pandemic alert level 5, and regional differences in these responses.
Methods
328 respondents completed a cross-sectional Internet or paper-based questionnaire study in Malaysia (N = 180) or Europe (N = 148). Measures assessed changes in transport usage, purchase of preparatory goods for a pandemic, perceived risk groups, indicators of anxiety, assessed estimated mortality rates for seasonal flu, effectiveness of seasonal flu vaccination, and changes in pork consumption
Results
26% of the respondents were 'very concerned' about being a flu victim (42% Malaysians, 5% Europeans, p < .001). 36% reported reduced public transport use (48% Malaysia, 22% Europe, p < .001), 39% flight cancellations (56% Malaysia, 17% Europe, p < .001). 8% had purchased preparatory materials (e.g. face masks: 8% Malaysia, 7% Europe), 41% Malaysia (15% Europe) intended to do so (p < .001). 63% of Europeans, 19% of Malaysians had discussed the pandemic with friends (p < .001). Groups seen as at 'high risk' of infection included the immune compromised (mentioned by 87% respondents), pig farmers (70%), elderly (57%), prostitutes/highly sexually active (53%), and the homeless (53%). In data collected only in Europe, 64% greatly underestimated the mortality rates of seasonal flu, 26% believed seasonal flu vaccination gave protection against swine flu. 7% had reduced/stopped eating pork. 3% had purchased anti-viral drugs for use at home, while 32% intended to do so if the pandemic worsened.
Conclusion
Initial responses to Influenza A show large regional differences in anxiety, with Malaysians more anxious and more likely to reduce travel and to buy masks and food. Discussions with family and friends may reinforce existing anxiety levels. Particular groups (homosexuals, prostitutes, the homeless) are perceived as at greater risk, potentially leading to increased prejudice during a pandemic. Europeans underestimated mortality of seasonal flu, and require more information about the protection given by seasonal flu inoculation
The construction of non-spherical models of quasi-relaxed stellar systems
Spherical models of collisionless but quasi-relaxed stellar systems have long
been studied as a natural framework for the description of globular clusters.
Here we consider the construction of self-consistent models under the same
physical conditions, but including explicitly the ingredients that lead to
departures from spherical symmetry. In particular, we focus on the effects of
the tidal field associated with the hosting galaxy. We then take a stellar
system on a circular orbit inside a galaxy represented as a "frozen" external
field. The equilibrium distribution function is obtained from the one
describing the spherical case by replacing the energy integral with the
relevant Jacobi integral in the presence of the external tidal field. Then the
construction of the model requires the investigation of a singular perturbation
problem for an elliptic partial differential equation with a free boundary, for
which we provide a method of solution to any desired order, with explicit
solutions to two orders. We outline the relevant parameter space, thus opening
the way to a systematic study of the properties of a two-parameter family of
physically justified non-spherical models of quasi-relaxed stellar systems. The
general method developed here can also be used to construct models for which
the non-spherical shape is due to internal rotation. Eventually, the models
will be a useful tool to investigate whether the shapes of globular clusters
are primarily determined by internal rotation, by external tides, or by
