    Assessing reproducibility for radiographic measurement of leg length inequality after total hip replacement

    Leg length inequality (LLI) as a result of total hip replacement can cause considerable morbidity. Although LLI was described when the technique was popularised in the 1960s, it remains a significant challenge to arthroplasty surgeons. This study reviews the established practice for the measurement of LLI on plain antero-posterior radiograph, and compares these techniques to two methods used locally. The radiographs of 35 patients were measured using four techniques. All four methods yielded an interclass correlation co-efficient of ≄0.90 for inter reader reliability. This study shows that the four methods are comparable for reliability, while a composite method, measuring from the centre of femoral rotation to the inferior teardrop and then to the lesser trochanter, has the added advantage of providing extra information on component position as well as an overall measure of LLI

    Black holes are the ultimate prisons of the Universe, regions of spacetime where the enormous gravity prohibits matter or even light to escape to infinity. Yet, matter falling toward the black holes may shine spectacularly, generating the strongest source of radiation. These sources provide us with astrophysical laboratories of extreme physical conditions that cannot be realized on Earth.     Calibration of Super-Kamiokande Using an Electron Linac

    In order to calibrate the Super-Kamiokande experiment for solar neutrino measurements, a linear accelerator (LINAC) for electrons was installed at the detector. LINAC data were taken at various positions in the detector volume, tracking the detector response in the variables relevant to solar neutrino analysis.     Measurement of a small atmospheric ΜΌ/Μe\nu_\mu/\nu_e ratio

    From an exposure of 25.5~kiloton-years of the Super-Kamiokande detector, 900 muon-like and 983 electron-like single-ring atmospheric neutrino interactions were detected with momentum pe>100p_e > 100 MeV/cc, pΌ>200p_\mu > 200 MeV/cc, and with visible energy less than 1.33 GeV. Using a detailed Monte Carlo simulation, the ratio (Ό/e)DATA/(Ό/e)MC(\mu/e)_{DATA}/(\mu/e)_{MC} was measured to be 0.61±0.03(stat.)±0.05(sys.)0.61 \pm 0.03(stat.) \pm 0.05(sys.), consistent with previous results from the Kamiokande, IMB and Soudan-2 experiments, and smaller than expected from theoretical models of atmospheric neutrino production.Comment: 14 pages with 5 figure

    Radioactivity from radon is a major background for observing solar neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande. In this paper, we describe the measurement of radon concentrations at Super-Kamiokande, the method of radon reduction, and the radon monitoring system. The measurement shows that the current low-energy event rate between 5.0 MeV and 6.5 MeV implies a radon concentration in the Super-Kamiokande water of less than 1.4 mBq/m3^3.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types

    Learning to Make Sense: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Sensory Education and Embodied Enculturation

    In this introductory essay we examine through a ‘temporally inflected lens’ some of the complex entanglements of learning, senses, and sense making; body-sensory experience and practice; and culture and society. We thereby aim to bring into dialogue inter-/multisensorial approaches to education as a project and praxis and processes of ‘enculturation’, which have always, in one way or the other, involved ‘embodied’ learning (and imaginaries thereof), rather than mere ‘mental processing’. We first situate the ‘turn’ to the senses, across a range of disciplinary fields, brought on by a growing interest in ‘modes of meaning-making’, including the visual, aural, audio-visual, material, bodily, and spatial. Secondly, we investigate the explanatory potential of enculturation and embodiment as seemingly entangled notions. From this, we derive the concept of ‘embodied enculturation’ for the study of situated, historical entanglements of sensory learning and education. We link this proposed research paradigm to incisive scholarship on ‘cultural learning’ through sensorial lenses, after which we tease out six key questions or concerns emerging from a review of relevant, recent research. These key concerns help to contextualize state-of-the-art ‘sensuous education scholarship’ introduced in the final section of the article and elaborated further in the ensuing contributions to this special issue
