    Determination of the diffusion constant using phase-sensitive measurements

    We apply a pulsed-light interferometer to measure both the intensity and the phase of light that is transmitted through a strongly scattering disordered material. From a single set of measurements we obtain the time-resolved intensity, frequency correlations and statistical phase information simultaneously. We compare several independent techniques of measuring the diffusion constant for diffuse propagation of light. By comparing these independent measurements, we obtain experimental proof of the consistency of the diffusion model and corroborate phase statistics theory.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys.     Metastatic Rectal Adenocarcinoma of the Hip and Knee Joints: A Case Series

    Two cases are presented of patients with a history of metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma presenting with a painful joint effusion. Both cases are potential examples of metastasis to periarticular bone with local infiltration to the synovium, which is one proposed mechanism of intrasynovial metastasis. While skeletal metastases are a relatively common occurrence in metastatic adenocarcinoma, intraarticular metastasis is extremely rare. These cases highlight the need to consider metastasis in the differential of joint swelling in the setting of a history of adenocarcinoma

    Heavy Sneutrinos as Dark Matter

    We calculate the relic density of very heavy, stable scalar neutrinos in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We include all two-body final states, as well as the effects of co-annihilation with scalar electrons. We find that the sneutrino relic density is in the cosmologically interesting region 0.1\ltwid\Omega_{\sn}h^2\ltwid 1.0 for 550\gev\ltwid\msn\ltwid 2300\gev. For nominal values of the parameters of our galactic halo, recent results from the Heidelberg--Moscow direct detection experiment set an upper limit on \Omega_{\sn} which is lower by a factor ranging from two to ten, depending on \msn.Comment: 7 pages in LaTeX, plus 1 uuencoded figure (uses epsf), UCSBTH--94--29, UMN--TH--1306/9

    Should Aggressive Surgical Local Control Be Attempted in All Patients with Metastatic or Pelvic Ewing's Sarcoma?

    In previous reports, patients with Ewing's sarcoma received radiation therapy (XRT) for definitive local control because metastatic disease and pelvic location were thought to preclude aggressive local treatment. We sought to determine if single-site metastatic disease should be treated differently from multicentric-metastatic disease. We also wanted to reinvestigate the impact of XRT, pelvic location, and local recurrence on outcomes. Our results demonstrated a significant difference in overall survival (OS) between patients with either localized disease or a single-metastatic site and patients with multicentric-metastatic disease (P = 0.004). Local control was also found to be an independent predictor of outcomes as demonstrated by a significant difference in OS between those with and without local recurrence (P = 0.001). Axial and pelvic location did not predict a decreased OS. Based on these results, we concluded that pelvic location and the diagnosis of metastatic disease at diagnosis should not preclude aggressive local control, except in cases of multicentric-metastatic disease

    Single Sessions of High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Do Not Alter Lower Extremity Biomechanical or Corticomotor Response Variables Post-stroke

    Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique used to modulate cortical activity. However, measured effects on clinically relevant assessments have been inconsistent, possibly due to the non-focal dispersion of current from traditional two electrode configurations. High-definition (HD)-tDCS uses a small array of electrodes (N = 5) to improve targeted current delivery. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a single session of anodal and cathodal HD-tDCS on gait kinematics and kinetics and the corticomotor response to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in individuals post-stroke. We hypothesized that ipsilesional anodal stimulation would increase the corticomotor response to TMS leading to beneficial changes in gait. Eighteen participants post-stroke (average age: 64.8 years, SD: 12.5; average months post-stroke: 54, SD: 42; average lower extremity Fugl-Meyer score: 26, SD: 6) underwent biomechanical and corticomotor response testing on three separate occasions prior to and after HD-tDCS stimulation. In a randomized order, anodal, cathodal, and sham HD-tDCS were applied to the ipsilesional motor cortex for 20 min while participants pedaled on a recumbent cycle ergometer. Gait kinetic and kinematic data were collected while walking on an instrumented split-belt treadmill with motion capture. The corticomotor response of the paretic and non-paretic tibialis anterior (TA) muscles were measured using neuronavigated TMS. Repeated measures ANOVAs using within-subject factors of time point (pre, post) and stimulation type (sham, anodal, cathodal) were used to compare effects of HD-tDCS stimulation on measured variables. HD-tDCS had no effect on over ground walking speed (P > 0.41), or kinematic variables (P > 0.54). The corticomotor responses of the TA muscles were also unaffected by HD-tDCS (resting motor threshold, P = 0.15; motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude, P = 0.25; MEP normalized latency, P = 0.66). A single session of anodal or cathodal HD-tDCS delivered to a standardized ipsilesional area of the motor cortex does not appear to alter gait kinematics or corticomotor response post-stroke. Repeated sessions and individualized delivery of HD-tDCS may be required to induce beneficial plastic effects. Contralesional stimulation should also be investigated due to the altered interactions between the cerebral hemispheres post-stroke

    The COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming Regions: Phase I Data

    We present an overview of data available for the Ophiuchus and Perseus molecular clouds from ``Phase I'' of the COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming Regions. This survey provides a range of data complementary to the Spitzer Legacy Program ``From Molecular Cores to Planet Forming Disks.'' Phase I includes: Extinction maps derived from 2MASS near-infrared data using the NICER algorithm; extinction and temperature maps derived from IRAS 60 and 100um emission; HI maps of atomic gas; 12CO and 13CO maps of molecular gas; and submillimetre continuum images of emission from dust in dense cores. Not unexpectedly, the morphology of the regions appears quite different depending on the column-density tracer which is used, with IRAS tracing mainly warmer dust and CO being biased by chemical, excitation and optical depth effects. Histograms of column-density distribution are presented, showing that extinction as derived from 2MASS/NICER gives the closest match to a log-normal distribution as is predicted by numerical simulations.     Generalized Analysis of Weakly-Interacting Massive Particle Searches

    We perform a generalized analysis of data from WIMP search experiments for point-like WIMPs of arbitrary spin and general Lorenz-invariant WIMP-nucleus interaction. We show that in the non-relativistic limit only spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent (SD) WIMP-nucleon interactions survive, which can be parameterized by only five independent parameters. We explore this five-dimensional parameter space to determine whether the annual modulation observed in the DAMA experiment can be consistent with all other experiments. The pure SI interaction is ruled out except for very small region of parameter space with the WIMP mass close to 50 GeV and the ratio of the WIMP-neutron to WIMP-proton SI couplings −0.77≀fn/fp≀−0.75-0.77\le f_n/f_p\le -0.75. For the predominantly SD interaction, we find an upper limit to the WIMP mass of about 18 GeV, which can only be weakened if the constraint stemming from null searches for energetic neutrinos from WIMP annihilation the Sun is evaded. None of the regions of the parameter space that can reconcile all WIMP search results can be easily accommodated in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure
