    Early Stage Cavitation Erosion within Ceramics: An Experimental Investigation

    Six ceramic material types were considered within an experimental investigation to identify the erosion damages mechanisms resulting from cavitation exposure. These materials were a Y-TZP type of zirconia, different commercially available silicon nitrides, a high purity alumina and an hardened high nitrogen stainless steel. An ultrasonic transducer was utilised to produce cavitation conditions and the configuration was “static specimen method” using a 5mm diameter probe, 20kHz and 50μm of amplitude. The exposure times were periods from 15 seconds to 2 hours. Experimental methods employed to characterise wear mechanisms were light microscopy, scanning light interferometry, scanning electronic microscopy. It was found that the zirconia and silicon nitrides demonstrated evidence of local pseudoplastic deformation or depression prior to more pronounced erosion damages by fracture. Zirconia showed evidence of delayed surface changes when the sample is at rest stored in air possibly by spontaneous phase transformation after the completion of the erosion tests. Alumina showed evidence of brittle surface fracture and negligible or no pseudo-plastic deformation.     Partial preservation of chiral symmetry and colossal magnetoresistance in adatom doped graphene

    We analyze the electronic properties of adatom doped graphene in the low impurity concentration regime. We focus on the Anderson localized regime and calculate the localization length (Îľ\xi) as a function of the electron doping and an external magnetic field. The impurity states hybridize with carbon's pzp_z states and form a partially filled band close to the Dirac point. Near the impurity band center, the chiral symmetry of the system's effective Hamiltonian is partially preserved which leads to a large enhancement of Îľ\xi. The sensitivity of transport properties, namely Mott's variable range hopping scale T0T_0, to an external magnetic field perpendicular to the graphene sheet leads to a colossal magnetoresistance effect, as observed in recent experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figs.     Localized Spins on Graphene

    The problem of a magnetic impurity, atomic or molecular, absorbed on top of a carbon atom in otherwise clean graphene is studied using the numerical renormalization group. The spectral, thermodynamic, and scattering properties of the impurity are described in detail. In the presence of a small magnetic field, the low energy electronic features of graphene make possible to inject spin polarized currents through the impurity using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Furthermore, the impurity scattering becomes strongly spin dependent and for a finite impurity concentration it leads to spin polarized bulk currents and a large magnetoresistance. In gated graphene the impurity spin is Kondo screened at low temperatures. However, at temperatures larger than the Kondo temperature, the anomalous magnetotransport properties are recovered.Comment: 4+ pages, 4 figures. Added reference

    Limit to General Relativity in f(R) theories of gravity

    We discuss two aspects of f(R) theories of gravity in metric formalism. We first study the reasons to introduce a scalar-tensor representation for these theories and the behavior of this representation in the limit to General Relativity, f(R)--> R. We find that the scalar-tensor representation is well behaved even in this limit. Then we work out the exact equations for spherically symmetric sources using the original f(R) representation, solve the linearized equations, and compare our results with recent calculations of the literature. We observe that the linearized solutions are strongly affected by the cosmic evolution, which makes very unlikely that the cosmic speedup be due to f(R) models with correcting terms relevant at low curvatures.Comment: 8 pages; small changes to match published version (some comments, references added, title corrected); to appear in Phys.Rev.
