    Quality of Life and Functionality in Patients with Flatfoot

    The objective of the study is to determine the prevalence of a plan, its impact on quality of life, dependence and functional limitation in a random population of 40 years and over. Cross-sectional study in a random population sample in Cambre (A Coruña-Spain) (n = 835) (α = 0.05; precision = ±3.4%). Anthropometric variables are studied, comorbidity (Charlson Score), foot functionality (FFI questionnaire), foot health questionnaire (FHSQ), quality of life (SF-36) and dependence on activities of daily living (Barthel index and Lawton). A logistic and linear multiple regression analysis was performed. The prevalence of flat feet was 26.62%. Patients with flat feet presented higher: age (65.73 ± 11.04 years), comorbidity index (0.92 ± 1.49), BMI (31.45 ± 5.55) and foot size (25, 16 ± 1.66 cm). Having flat feet decreases the quality of life and function of the foot. The association of flat feet with age, Charlson index, and BMI and foot size was found. The SF-36, Barthel and Lawton questionnaires remained unchanged due to the presence of the flat foot, a difference between the FHSQ and FFI that were significantly sensitive

    Air-cooled heat exchanger design using successive quadratic programming (SQP)

    A nonlinear optimization algorithm is applied to the design of air-cooled heat exchangers. In such equipment, the cold fluid (air) is impelled across banks of finned tubes by means of fans in forced or induced draft. The hot stream flows inside the tubes in one or more passes, and the process that takes place may be cooling of either a gas or a liquid, or condensation of either a pure vapor or a mixture. The objective function is the minimum cost of the unit (investment and operation), subject to certain geometric and thermohydraulic constraints. The optimization algorithm used is that developed by Biegler and Cuthrell [1], and programmed by them in the OPT package. The problem posed in this case is made of 10 optimization variables, subject to five constraints related to geometric and operational parameters of the heat exchanger.Fil: Gonzalez, Maria Teresa.     Real Time Development Interface Embedded in a Compact Motion Controller

    This paper presents a real-time development interface for motor control, embedded in a single board (MCB). The MCB’s CPU is an ARM CortexA8 supporting EtherCAT implementation. This CPU computes the control algorithm that can be implemented with Matlab/Simulink toolchain. The host PC that runs Matlab environment is able to connect to the running code via EtherCAT bus by use of Ethernet over EtherCAT (EoE) directly. Via external mode the developer is able to monitor all Simulink signals of the deployed model on hardware board during runtime. Manipulation of constant block values is also feasible to e.g. investigate on different controller parameters online. The actual prototype board is fully functional and will now be miniaturized to fit into a modular drive unit. With this unit complex multi-axis systems can be installed, monitored and investigated by simply attaching EtherCAT communication bus and single power supply voltage. Thanks to Simulink development environment the controller code development is very efficient. Since the hardware is reduced to mass electronics components the cost is acceptable

    On the difference of torus geometry between hidden and non-hidden broad line active galactic nuclei

    We present results from the fitting of infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions of 21 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with clumpy torus models. We compiled high spatial resolution (0.3\sim 0.3--0.70.7 arcsec) mid-IR NN-band spectroscopy, QQ-band imaging and nuclear near- and mid-IR photometry from the literature. Combining these nuclear near- and mid-IR observations, far-IR photometry and clumpy torus models, enables us to put constraints on the torus properties and geometry. We divide the sample into three types according to the broad line region (BLR) properties; type-1s, type-2s with scattered or hidden broad line region (HBLR) previously observed, and type-2s without any published HBLR signature (NHBLR). Comparing the torus model parameters gives us the first quantitative torus geometrical view for each subgroup. We find that NHBLR AGN have smaller torus opening angles and larger covering factors than those of HBLR AGN. This suggests that the chance to observe scattered (polarized) flux from the BLR in NHBLR could be reduced by the dual effects of (a) less scattering medium due to the reduced scattering volume given the small torus opening angle and (b) the increased torus obscuration between the observer and the scattering region. These effects give a reasonable explanation for the lack of observed HBLR in some type-2 AGN.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Structural and magnetic behavior of ferrogels obtained by freezing thawing of polyvinyl alcohol/poly (acrylic acid) (PAA)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles

    Superparamagnetic ferrogels with high swelling ability and potential applications as solvent absorbers and stimuli-responsive drug delivery devices were obtained by a non-toxic and environmentally friendly route based on dispersion of poly(acrylic acid)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (PAA-coated NPs) in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions followed by freezing–thawing. Presence of carboxylate groups arising from the PAA coating allowed hydrogen bonding formation between NPs and PVA and enabled the synthesis of optically homogenous, superparamagnetic materials formed by a homogenous distribution of NPs diffuse clusters in the PVA matrix. The addition of PAA-coated NPs produced a remarkable increase in crystallinity degree, thermal degradation and swelling percentage respect to the neat matrix, which demonstrates that ferrogels with improved properties can be obtained by this procedure. Thereafter, combination of a cryogenic technique with the use of non-toxic components and magnetic NPs coated by a pH sensitive polymer makes these ferrogels very promising for applications in the biomedical field.Fil: Moscoso Londoño, Oscar.     Differences between CO- and calcium triplet-derived velocity dispersions in spiral galaxies: evidence for central star formation?

    We examine the stellar velocity dispersions (sigma) of a sample of 48 galaxies, 35 of which are spirals, from the Palomar nearby galaxy survey. It is known that for ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and merger remnants thesigma derived from the near-infrared CO band-heads is smaller than that measured from optical lines, while no discrepancy between these measurements is found for early-type galaxies. No such studies are available for spiral galaxies - the subject of this paper. We used cross-dispersed spectroscopic data obtained with the Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS), with spectral coverage from 0.85 to 2.5um, to obtain sigma measurements from the 2.29 μ\mum CO band-heads (sigma_{CO}), and the 0.85 um calcium triplet (sigma_{CaT}). For the spiral galaxies in the sample, we found that sigma_{CO} is smaller than sigma_{CaT}, with a mean fractional difference of 14.3%. The best fit to the data is given by sigma_{opt} = (46.0+/-18.1) + (0.85+/-0.12)sigma_{CO}. This "sigma discrepancy" may be related to the presence of warm dust, as suggested by a slight correlation between the discrepancy and the infrared luminosity. This is consistent with studies that have found no sigma-discrepancy in dust-poor early-type galaxies, and a much larger discrepancy in dusty merger remnants and ULIRGs. That sigma_{CO}$ is lower than sigma_{opt} may also indicate the presence of a dynamically cold stellar population component. This would agree with the spatial correspondence between low sigma_{CO} and young/intermediate-age stellar populations that has been observed in spatially-resolved spectroscopy of a handful of galaxies.Comment: Published in MNRAS, 446, 282
