Amor y Apoyo: Lecciones de Latinx Families in Nourishing Resilience to First and Second-Generation College Students
The present qualitative study aims to understand how Latino/Hispanic herea er referred to as Latinx, parent involvement is different or similar among first- and second-generation college students in how they experience higher education and how parental education impacts the use of student support services. Hence, supporting Latinx student retention by developing university and parental relationships. Second-generation college students and Latinx parents were unable to be included in the study because of their scarcity or hesitation of participating. Therefore, participants included a convenience sample of six first-generation undergraduate students from a 4-year institution. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain their stories of parental involvement and student involvement. Results suggest that (1) first-generation college students experience a hands-off involvement from parents, however, they enjoyed the freedom this brought, (2) Latinx parents might have a misunderstanding of college student identity, and (3) students expressed a desire to have their parents learn about and understand mental health. Implications of findings include universities creating more resources to support Latinx students’ mental health, as well as earlier school outreach for Latinx parent involvement to better inform them about the college lifestyle

The Untapped Potential of Commuters: Engaging Faculty and Staff to Foster a Commuter-Inclusive Space and Student Interest at the University of San Diego
The commuter student population faces many challenges in getting involved on campus. Taking an asset-based approach, this study aimed to enhance first-year commuter engagement and support their sense of belonging at a private, faith-based university. By modifying McNiff and Whitehead’s model of reflect-plan-act-exhibit, students were invited to engage in several identity, community, and leadership activities throughout the academic year. Results suggest first-year commuters need role modeling or mentorship that is challenging and supportive, the support of creating a ‘third space’ away from home and school, and the development of authentic and genuine connections among peers and staff. It is recommended that practitioners acknowledge and embrace students’ commuter identity and work to increase the visibility and accessibility of commuter-targeted programming. Additionally, staff must build a community among commuter students through dedicated spaces and peer mentoring programs to strengthen and enhance first-year commuter cocurricular engagement
ESL and ELL Program Effectiveness: Providing Academic Success for Students
The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of English as a Second Language and English Language Learners—ESL and ELL respectively—programs in helping students whose native language is not English achieve academic success in school. The general issue with these programs is that more often than not, students whose native language is not English are placed in separate classrooms from their peers, which leads to an academic disadvantage because the focus is on language acquisition. This does not provide other forms of long-term knowledge that will help the students. In other words, ESL and ELL programs are efficient when it comes to teaching students the English language, but some may focus on language acquisition more, and disregard other materials or limit social interactions with the students in the programs. The theory used in this study was Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, which states that there is a social component to English acquisition since an English learner requires an individual who is more knowledgeable to teach them the language, and interaction between the two is crucial for the success of language acquisition to be possible. The methods used were a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches. I was also able to have first-hand knowledge on the use of a different language in a classroom setting that might not be native to all students. This research includes an extensive literature review on literature regarding ESL and ELL programs, and a service-learning component in order to analyze the effectiveness of such programs, and the impact that they have on students, primarily those who are in elementary school. This research concludes that ESL and ELL programs are effective when it comes to non-native English speakers achieving academic success in their education because of the incorporation of other material, such as language arts, rather than focusing solely on language acquisition, and that the inclusion of another language in the classroom helps students with their cognitive development
Key aspects in 3D fatigue crack closure numerical modelling
Since long time, fatigue crack closure has been studied by means of finite element
models. Initially by bi-dimensional models and recently, due to the higher computational
capabilities, the use of three-dimensional models has been extended, providing a wider
comprehension of the problem. Starting with the methodology used for 2D cases, a specific
methodology for 3D models has been developed. Key parameters affecting the model have been
analyzed and recommendations have been established. The numerical accuracy is evaluated in
terms of crack closure and opening values. They main issues studied are the material behaviour, the
loading cycles and crack growth scheme, the contact simulation, the meshing and the element size
at the crack tip and along the thickness, the plastic wake computed and the opening and closure
definition considered. This paper summarises the main learning and recommendations from the

3D numerical study of the transient behaviour on plasticity induced crack closure

Transient behaviour is observed when the crack starts to grow. The plastic wake length has an influence on the crack closure results and a great impact on the computational cost. Previous works have analysed the influence of this parameter considering bi-dimensional specimens in either plane strain or plane stress conditions. Lately, some three-dimensional models have appeared in order to analyse the crack closure phenomenon. The main scope of this study is to quantify and comprehend the minimum length required to stabilise the crack opening and closure values considering a three-dimensional model. On this purpose, a CT aluminium specimen has been modelled three-dimensionally and several calculations have been made in order to evaluate the influence of the simulated plastic wake. A numerical analysis of the plastic wake influence on plasticity induced crack closure
Fatigue crack closure has been studied by means of finite element method since long time
ago. Most work has been performed considering bi-dimensional models. Lately, the use of threedimensional
models has been extended. Nevertheless, the methodology employed has been taken from
that developed for bi-dimensional cases.
There are a great number of previous bi-dimensional studies which analyse different numerical
parameters and optimise them. The current computational capabilities allow a comprehensive study of
the influence of the different modelling parameters in a similar way to those studies carried out with bidimensional
models, with the advantage, that the evolution along the thickness of the analysed
parameters can be taken into consideration.
In particular, one of the key issues is related to the plastic wake length which is developed during the
previous loading cycles. This residual stresses have a great influence on the crack opening and closure
values. As the numerical analysis are complex and computationally expensive, the length of the
simulated wake is a critical parameter.
In this work, a comprehensive study of the effect of the plastic wake in fatigue crack closure is made.
On this purpose, a CT aluminium specimen has been modelled three-dimensionally and several
calculations have been made in order to evaluate the influence of the simulated plastic wake length. The
numerical analysis is made in terms of crack closure and opening values as in terms of the stress and
