    Recent experiment proposed to observe induced radiative neutrino transitions are confronted to existing bounds on neutrino magnetic moments from earth-based experiments. These are found to exclude any observation by several orders of magnitude, unless the magnetic moments are assumed to be strongly momentum dependent.     Transport Properties through Double Barrier Structure in Graphene

    The mode-dependent transmission of relativistic ballistic massless Dirac fermion through a graphene based double barrier structure is being investigated for various barrier parameters. We compare our results with already published work and point out the relevance of these findings to a systematic study of the transport properties in double barrier structures. An interesting situation arises when we set the potential in the leads to zero, then our 2D problem reduces effectively to a 1D massive Dirac equation with an effective mass proportional to the quantized wave number along the transverse direction. Furthermore we have shown that the minimal conductivity and maximal Fano factor remain insensitive to the ratio between the two potentials V_2/V_1=\alpha.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, clarifications and reference added, misprints corrected.     Neutralization of a single arginine residue gates open a two-pore domain, alkali-activated K+ channel

Diversity in K+ channels is given by how they are gated open. TASK-2, TALK-1, and TALK-2 are two-pore region (2P) KCNK K+ channels gated open by extracellular alkalinization. We have explored the mechanism for this alkalinization-dependent gating using molecular simulation and site-directed mutagenesis followed by functional assay. We show that the side chain of a single arginine residue (R224) near the pore senses pH in TASK-2 with an unusual pKa of 8.0, a shift likely due to its hydrophobic environment. R224 would block the channel through an electrostatic effect on the pore, a situation relieved by its deprotonation by alkalinization. A lysine residue in TALK-2 fulfills the same role but with a largely unchanged pKa, which correlates with an environment that stabilizes its positive charge. In addition to suggesting unified alkaline pH-gating mechanisms within the TALK subfamily of channels, our results illustrate in a physiological context the principle that hydrophobic environment can drastically modulate the pKa of charged amino acids within a protein.PNAS Sponsored This article contains supporting information online at www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/0606173104/DC1

    Management of diabetic macular edema patients in clinical practice in Spain

    Purpose: Diabetic macular edema is the main cause of blindness in diabetic patients. Vascular endothelial growth factor is involved in diabetic macular edema pathogenesis. Vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors are an important option in diabetic macular edema therapy. This survey investigates actual clinical practice in diabetic macular edema in Spain. Methods: An expert advisory panel of 17 Spanish ophthalmologists developed a 30-item anonymous questionnaire about diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up in diabetic macular edema. A total of 137 ophthalmologists from 10 Spanish regions completed the questionnaire online. Results: Almost all of the respondents (99.3%) record the measured visual acuity and perform biomicroscopic anterior (94.9%) and posterior (91.2%) segment examinations. Similarly, 100% of responding ophthalmologists always/almost always or frequently perform optical coherence tomography. Most respondents (65%) always/almost always or frequently perform a retinography. More than 50% rarely perform fluorescein angiography. Nearly, all (96.4%) of the specialists responded that, in center-involved diabetic macular edema, the first treatment is an anti–vascular endothelial growth factor drug. For corticosteroids, the first choice of most respondents (91.2%) was the dexamethasone implant. In the follow-up, almost all (96.4%) specialists record the measured visual acuity and most also perform biomicroscopic anterior (82.5%) and posterior (83.2%) segment examination. Conclusion: This survey shows the actual clinical practice in diabetic macular edema in Spain, finding that anti–vascular endothelial growth factor therapy is frequently used, and that diagnosis, treatments, and follow-up examinations used by specialists are homogeneous and according to diabetic macular edema guidelines

    Rapid diagnosis of human brucellosis by SYBR Green I-based real-time PCR assay and melting curve analysis in serum samples

    SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to develop a LightCycler-based real-time PCR (LC-PCR) assay and to evaluate its diagnostic use for the detection of Brucella DNA in serum samples. Following amplification of a 223-bp gene sequence encoding an immunogenetic membrane protein (BCSP31) specific for the Brucella genus, melting curve and DNA sequencing analysis was performed to verify the specificity of the PCR products. The intra- and inter-assay variation coefficients were 1.3% and 6.4%, respectively, and the detection limit was 5 fg of Brucella DNA (one genome equivalent). After optimisation of the PCR assay conditions, a standard curve was obtained with a linear range (correlation coefficient = 0.99) over seven orders of magnitude from 107 to 10 fg of Brucella DNA. The LC-PCR assay was found to be 91.9% sensitive and 95.4% specific when tested with 65 negative control samples and 62 serum samples from 60 consecutive patients with active brucellosis. The assay is reproducible, easily standardised, minimises the risk of infection in laboratory workers, and has a total processing time of < 2 h. It could therefore form a promising and practical approach for the rapid diagnosis of human brucellosis

    Thermal Effect on TL Response of Single Doped LiF+NaF:RE Polycrystalline Phosphors

    In this work, the sintering and annealing effects on the thermoluminescent (TL) behavior of undoped and rare earth (RE)-doped LiF+NaF powder samples (RE = Ce3+, Eu3+, Lu3+ or Tl+, at 0.5 mol%) was analyzed by evaluating the sensitivity to gamma radiation and TL response of the material. The polycrystalline samples were obtained by solid state reaction at 1000°C. The samples were irradiated in a Gammacell-3000 Elan irradiator loaded with 137Cs sources. The glow curves of the LiF+NaF doped with lutetium or thallium show an intense glow peak at about 175°C and 135°C, respectively. When the phosphor was doped with cerium or europium the glow curves were complex in their structure, with TL peaks observed at 155°C and 165°C, respectively. The linear dose-response was between 10 and 50 Gy for cerium, europium or lutetium doped LiF+NaF samples, while for the thallium doped and undoped samples such intervals were 10-100 Gy and 10-500 Gy, respectively. Because the shape of the glow curves were complex, the analysis was carried out in (i) samples without a sintering treatment where the TL response was found insensitive to pre-irradiation annealing treatment, and (ii) sintered samples (300, 350, 400 or 500 °C), in this last case the TL response was dependent on the annealing temperature (100-400 °C), finally (iii) the kinetics parameters of the glow curves were analyzed by assuming a general order kinetics model. The observed glow curves and TL characteristics of the LiF+NaF:RE phosphor make attractive this material to be useful in gamma dose dosimetry

    Invasive Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora), an allergy and health challenge

    Mesquite (Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC), is an medium-sized tree (family Fabaceae, subfamily Mimosoideae), that has been intorcuded around the world. It is a noxious invasive species in Africa, Asia, and the Arabian Peninsula and a source of highly allergenic pollen in. The present article reviews the adverse allergenic effects of P. juliflora pollen on human and animal health. Several studies have diagnosed that allergenic pollens from Prosopis spp. can provoke respiratory problems. Prosopis pollen extracts have 16 allergenic components of which nine proteins were recognized as major allergens with some of them showing cross-reactivity. Clinically, understanding Prosopis pollen production, flowering seasonality, pollen load, and dispersal in the atmosphere are important to avoid allergic consequences for local inhabitants. Climate change and other pollution can also help to further facilitate allergenic issues. Furthermore, we document other human and animal health problems caused by invasive Prosopis trees. This includes flesh injuries, dental and gastric problems, and the facilitation of malaria. This review summarizes and enhances the existing knowledge about Prosopis flowering phenology, aeroallergen, and other human and animal health risks associated with this noxious plant

    Interplay of quantum magnetic and potential scattering around Zn or Ni impurity ions in superconducting cuprates

    To describe the scattering of superconducting quasiparticles from non-magnetic (Zn) or magnetic (Ni) impurities in optimally doped high Tc_c cuprates, we propose an effective Anderson model Hamiltonian of a localized electron hybridizing with dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave BCS type superconducting quasiparticles with an attractive scalar potential at the impurity site. Due to the strong local antiferromagnetic couplings between the original Cu ions and their nearest neighbors, the localized electron in the Ni-doped materials is assumed to be on the impurity sites, while in the Zn-doped materials the localized electron is distributed over the four nearest neighbor sites of the impurities with a dominant dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2} symmetric form of the wave function. With Ni impurities, two resonant states are formed above the Fermi level in the local density of states at the impurity site, while for Zn impurities a sharp resonant peak below the Fermi level dominates in the local density of states at the Zn site, accompanied by a small and broad resonant state above the Fermi level mainly induced by the potential scattering. In both cases, there are no Kondo screening effects. The local density of states and their spatial distribution at the dominant resonant energy around the substituted impurities are calculated for both cases, and they are in good agreement with the experimental results of scanning tunneling microscopy in Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} with Zn or Ni impurities, respectively.Comment: 24 pages, Revtex, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review B for publication.     Horava-Lifshitz Dark Energy

    We formulate Horava-Lifshitz cosmology with an additional scalar field that leads to an effective dark energy sector. We find that, due to the inherited features from the gravitational background, Horava-Lifshitz dark energy naturally presents very interesting behaviors, possessing a varying equation-of-state parameter, exhibiting phantom behavior and allowing for a realization of the phantom divide crossing. In addition, Horava-Lifshitz dark energy guarantees for a bounce at small scale factors and it may trigger the turnaround at large scale factors, leading naturally to cyclic cosmology.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, version published at EJP
