    The Flow Fingerprinting Game

    Linking two network flows that have the same source is essential in intrusion detection or in tracing anonymous connections. To improve the performance of this process, the flow can be modified (fingerprinted) to make it more distinguishable. However, an adversary located in the middle can modify the flow to impair the correlation by delaying the packets or introducing dummy traffic. We introduce a game-theoretic framework for this problem, that is used to derive the Nash Equilibrium. As obtaining the optimal adversary delays distribution is intractable, some approximations are done. We study the concrete example where these delays follow a truncated Gaussian distribution. We also compare the optimal strategies with other fingerprinting schemes. The results are useful for understanding the limits of flow correlation based on packet timings under an active attacker.Comment: Workshop on Information Forensics and Securit

    Intrinsic Noise of the Single Electron Box

    We quantify the intrinsic noise of the Single Electron Box arising from stochastic cyclic electron tunnelling between a quantum dot and a resevoir driven by a periodic gate voltage. We use both a master equation formalism and Markov Monte Carlo simulations to calculate the gate noise current, and find it to be generated by a cyclostationary process which displays significant spectral correlations at large excitation amplitudes and high tunnel rates. We model noise filtering through an electrical resonator and detection via synchronous demodulation to evaluate the effective noise spectral density in rf-reflectometry qubit readout applications, and determine the conditions under which the intrinsic noise limit could be measured experimentally. Our results have implications in the ultimate sensitivity of SEBs for fast, high-fidelity readout of spin qubits.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Diverse Cis-Regulatory Mechanisms Contribute to Expression Evolution of Tandem Gene Duplicates

The deposited article version contains attached the supplementary materials within the pdf.Pairs of duplicated genes generally display a combination of conserved expression patterns inherited from their unduplicated ancestor and newly acquired domains. However, how the cis-regulatory architecture of duplicated loci evolves to produce these expression patterns is poorly understood. We have directly examined the gene-regulatory evolution of two tandem duplicates, the Drosophila Ly6 genes CG9336 and CG9338, which arose at the base of the drosophilids between 40 and 60 million years ago. Comparing the expression patterns of the two paralogs in four Drosophila species with that of the unduplicated ortholog in the tephritid Ceratitis capitata, we show that they diverged from each other as well as from the unduplicated ortholog. Moreover, the expression divergence appears to have occurred close to the duplication event and also more recently in a lineage-specific manner. The comparison of the tissue-specific cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) controlling the paralog expression in the four Drosophila species indicates that diverse cis-regulatory mechanisms, including the novel tissue-specific enhancers, differential inactivation, and enhancer sharing, contributed to the expression evolution. Our analysis also reveals a surprisingly variable cis-regulatory architecture, in which the CRMs driving conserved expression domains change in number, location, and specificity. Altogether, this study provides a detailed historical account that uncovers a highly dynamic picture of how the paralog expression patterns and their underlying cis-regulatory landscape evolve.     Synchronized network activity in developing rat hippocampus involves regional hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channel function.

    The principal form of synchronized network activity in neonatal hippocampus consists of low frequency 'giant depolarizing potentials' (GDPs). Whereas contribution of both GABA and glutamate to their generation has been demonstrated, full understanding of the mechanisms underlying these synchronized activity bursts remains incomplete. A contribution of the h-current, conducted by HCN channels, to GDPs has been a topic of substantial interest. Here we focus on HCN1, the prevalent HCN channel isoform in neonatal hippocampus, and demonstrate an HCN1 spatiotemporal expression pattern in both CA3 principal cells and interneurons that correlates with the developmental profile of GDPs. Abrogation of HCN physiological function in CA3, via the selective I(h)-blocker ZD7288, disrupts GDP generation. Furthermore, ZD7288 specifically abolishes spontaneous bursting of the CA3 pyramidal cells at frequencies typical of GDPs without major influence on interneuronal firing. These findings support a pivotal role for HCN channels expressed by CA3 neurons, and particularly CA3 pyramidal cells, in GDP-related network synchronization

    Previsão de reações adversas dos anti-inflamatórios não esteroides por meio de modelação molecular

    Introdução: Os anti-inflamatórios não esteróides (AINEs) são amplamente utilizados pelos seus efeitos anti-inflamatórios, analgésicos e antipiréticos no tratamento de diversas patologias, muitas vezes sem receita médica (Aleksic et al., 2022). AINEs é muito comum na população. Por esta razão, os métodos de previsão utilizando técnicas de inteligência artificial impõem-se como uma nova alternativa (Cox et al., 2013). Objetivos: Modelar as reações adversas mais prováveis de anti-inflamatórios não esteroidais usando a abordagem MODESLAB. Material e Métodos: Para isso, os momentos espectrais da matriz de adjacência entre arestas do gráfico molecular foram calculados com diferentes parâmetros que caracterizam tanto as ligações quanto os átomos nas moléculas de 62 compostos com ação anti-inflamatória. Sobre técnicas estatísticas é usada uma técnica de análise discriminante linear, que está incluída na análise multivariada. Resultados: Um total de 91 descritores foram calculados e utilizados em uma série de treinamento dividida em quatro grupos, de acordo com o tipo de reação adversa mais frequente. Para identificar os descritores que melhor discriminam e definem o conjunto de funções, foi desenvolvida uma análise discriminante linear utilizando o método de inclusão stepwise assim como o software estatístico IBM SPSS versão 22. Foram geradas três funções que constituem combinações lineares de seis descritores moleculares que codificam informações estéricas e eletrônicas das moléculas de cada grupo. Conclusões: As funções obtidas apresentam um Wilks Lambda muito baixo (0,0146) e uma correlação canônica alta (0,9784), o que demonstra seu poder discriminante, e permite que os descritores nelas incluídas sejam utilizados em futuros estudos

    dReDBox: Materializing a full-stack rack-scale system prototype of a next-generation disaggregated datacenter

    Current datacenters are based on server machines, whose mainboard and hardware components form the baseline, monolithic building block that the rest of the system software, middleware and application stack are built upon. This leads to the following limitations: (a) resource proportionality of a multi-tray system is bounded by the basic building block (mainboard), (b) resource allocation to processes or virtual machines (VMs) is bounded by the available resources within the boundary of the mainboard, leading to spare resource fragmentation and inefficiencies, and (c) upgrades must be applied to each and every server even when only a specific component needs to be upgraded. The dRedBox project (Disaggregated Recursive Datacentre-in-a-Box) addresses the above limitations, and proposes the next generation, low-power, across form-factor datacenters, departing from the paradigm of the mainboard-as-a-unit and enabling the creation of function-block-as-a-unit. Hardware-level disaggregation and software-defined wiring of resources is supported by a full-fledged Type-1 hypervisor that can execute commodity virtual machines, which communicate over a low-latency and high-throughput software-defined optical network.     Role of the extended lymphadenectomy in gastric cancer surgery: experience

    Although curative resection is the treatment of choice for gastric cancer, controversy exists about the adequate extent of lymph node dissection when resection is performed. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 85 patients who underwent a limited lymphadenectomy (D1) and 71 who had an extended lymph node dissection (D2) in a single institution between 1990 and 1998 (median follow-up, 37.3 months). Prognostic factors were assessed by Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS: We found no significant difference in the length of hospital stay (median, 12.1 and 13.1 days), overall morbidity (48.2% and 53.5%), or operative mortality (2.3% and 0%) between D1 and D2, respectively. Five-year survival in the D2 group was longer (50.6%) than in the D1 group (41.4%) for tumor stages (tumor-node-metastasis) >I. In multivariate analysis, tumor-node-metastasis stage (hazard ratio for stages >I vs. 0-I, 11.6), the ratio between invaded and removed lymph nodes, the presence of distant metastases, Lauren classification, and the extent of lymphadenectomy (hazard ratio for D1 vs. D2, 2.3; 95% confidence interval, 1.25-4.30) were the only significant prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS: Our experience shows that extended (D2) lymph node dissection improves survival in patients with resected gastric cancer
