Green's functions for far-side seismic images: a polar expansion approach
We have computed seismic images of magnetic activity on the far surface of
the Sun by using a seismic-holography technique. As in previous works, the
method is based on the comparison of waves going in and out of a particular
point in the Sun but we have computed here the Green's functions from a
spherical polar expansion of the adiabatic wave equations in the Cowling
approximation instead of using the ray-path approximation previously used in
the far-side holography. A comparison between the results obtained using the
ray theory and the spherical polar expansion is shown. We use the
gravito-acoustic wave equation in the local plane-parallel limit in both cases
and for the latter we take the asymptotic approximation for the radial
dependencies of the Green's function. As a result, improved images of the
far-side can be obtained from the polar-expansion approximation, especially
when combining the Green's functions corresponding to two and three skips. We
also show that the phase corrections in the Green's functions due to the
incorrect modeling of the uppermost layers of the Sun can be estimated from the
eigenfrequencies of the normal modes of oscillation.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, Astrophysical Journal, accepted (2010

Composite polymer membranes for laserinduced fluorescence thermometry
We demonstrate a modified version of laser-induced fluorescence thermometry (LIFT) for mapping temperature gradients in the vicinity of small photothermal devices. Our approach is based on temperature sensitive fluorescent membranes fabricated with rhodamine B and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Relevant membrane features for LIFT, such as temperature sensitivity, thermal quenching and photobleaching are presented for a range of 25 °C to 90 °C, and their performance is evaluated upon obtaining the temperature gradients produced in the proximity of optical fiber micro-heaters. Our results show that temperature measurements in regions as small as 750 μm x 650 μm, with a temperature resolution of 1 °C, can be readily obtained
Room temperature ferromagnetic-like behavior in Mn-implanted and post-annealed InAs layers deposited by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
We report on the magnetic and structural properties of Ar and Mn implanted
InAs epitaxial films grown on GaAs (100) by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and
the effect of Rapid Thermal Annealing (RTA) for 30 seconds at 750C. Channeling
Particle Induced X- ray Emission (PIXE) experiments reveal that after Mn
implantation almost all Mn atoms are subsbtitutional in the In-site of the InAs
lattice, like in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS). All of these samples
show diamagnetic behavior. But, after RTA treatment the Mn-InAs films exhibit
room-temperature magnetism. According to PIXE measurements the Mn atoms are no
longer substitutional. When the same set of experiments were performed with As
as implantation ion all of the layers present diamagnetism without exception.
This indicates that the appearance of room-temperature ferromagnetic-like
behavior in the Mn-InAs-RTA layer is not related to lattice disorder produce
during implantation, but to a Mn reaction produced after a short thermal
treatment. X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and Rutherford Back Scattering
(RBS) measurements evidence the segregation of an oxygen deficient-MnO2 phase
(nominally MnO1.94) in the Mn-InAs-RTA epitaxial layers which might be on the
origin of room temperature ferromagnetic-like response observed.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. Acepted in J. Appl. Phy
As a result, the doctor-patient relationship (RMP) has special features that also require specific skills by the physician. In this article, some aspects of this relationship are discussed, such as: diagnosis disclosure, the work with the caregiver, the therapeutic alternatives discussion, monitoring, determination of competence, the tendency to reify the patient, the decision to institutionalize and end of life care. Recommendations are given to work on these aspects according to the severity of dementia, and are addressed from an ethical and practical perspective, keeping in mind the values and preferences of patients and their caregivers
Analysis of the quark sector in the 2HDM-III with a four-zero Yukawa texture using the most recent data on the CKM matrix
In this letter we analyse, in the context of the general 2-Higgs Doublet
Model, the structure of the Yukawa matrices, , by assuming a four-zero texture ansatz for their definition. In this
framework, we obtain compact expressions for , which are reduced to the Cheng and Sher ansatz with the difference that
they are obtained naturally as a direct consequence of the invariants of the
fermion mass matrices. Furthermore, in order to avoid large flavour violating
effects coming from charged Higgs exchange, we consider the main flavour
constraints on the off-diagonal terms of Yukawa texture {{}} (). We perform a -fit
based on current experimental data on the quark masses and the
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix . Hence, we obtain
the allowed ranges for the parameters at
1 for several values of . The results are in complete
agreement with the bounds obtained taking into account constraints on Flavour
Changing Neutral Currents reported in the literature.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure. Version accepted in Phys. Lett.
We reported a retrospective study of 36 patients with a pseudoarthrosis of the
carpal scaphoid bone treated by the Matti-Russe operation from 1985 to 1991. We used radial
(50%), iliac (42%) or ulnar (8%) autogenous grafts without any difference in the rate of incorporation.
The rate of healing of the pseudoarthrosis was higher in mid and distal location
(80%) than in proximal location (54%). In 80% of cases, healing failures in the mid and distal
location occurred in old pseudoarthrosis ( >3 0 months evolution). Carpal degenerative changes
were significantly higher (p < 0,01) in patients with not healed pseudoarthrosis. The location
and the age of the pseudoarthrosis appear to be important prognostic factors. The Matti-Russe
technique has limitations when is performed either in proximal pseudoarthrosis or in the presence
of advanced radiocarpal osteoarthritis
