PURPOSE: To investigate the changes in central and peripheral anterior corneal curvatures after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and to correlate them with the manifest refractive change to discuss how such results could affect post-LASIK corneal topography profiles and midterm stability and their implications in postsurgical contact lens fitting. METHODS: Topographic and refractive data from 18 eyes of 11 patients that had undergone myopic LASIK were collected for 6 months after surgery. Short-term and midterm topographic responses were investigated and correlated with spherical equivalent manifest refractive changes. RESULTS: There was a strong correlation between eccentricity changes and manifest refractive change 15 days after surgery (r = 0.753, P < 0.001), with no significant changes thereafter for the following 6 months (r = 0.148, P = 0.114). A strong linear relationship was found between baseline manifest refraction and changes in corneal curvature at the center (r = 0.810, P < 0.001), 4-mm chord (r = 0.895, P < 0.001), and 6-mm chord (r = 0.696, P < 0.001). Statistically significant changes were also found after the first 15 days (P < 0.005) and showed a regression effect that affects the three zones. In this case, a weaker relationship was found between curvature regression and the final refractive change for the central location (r = 0.412, P = 0.004), 4-mm chord area (r = 0.430, P = 0.003), and 6-mm chord area (r = 0.283, P = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS.: After myopic LASIK, the anterior corneal dioptric power is expected to change, on average, approximately 77% of the attempted spherical equivalent correction at the center; 60% at the 4-mm chord region, where the stronger correlation between topographic and refractive change is found; and 30% at the 6-mm chord area. The paracentral area 4 mm from the center seems to be more likely to predict baseline corneal curvature from manifest refractive change. Some degree of regression in the midterm period is expected to occur after myopic LASIK, which shows a significant correlation with the manifest refractive change. Again, this effect is more evident and more accurately predicted at the 4-mm chord area. The results of the current study are of interest for those fitting contact lenses after myopic LASIK.(undefined

This article describes a set of theoretical considerations that justify the methodological approaches for training of entrepreneurs subject, with a view to integrating the multidisciplinary approach we have termed "entrepreneurship." In the present paper is to analyze how emotions influence the processes of building knowledge of the subjects entrepreneurs and why they rely on heuristics and biases in personnel decisions. We also discussed the impact of these approaches in the construction of personal and social future scenarios in which future develop innovation projects and the impact that theoretically may have the use of educational software in the construction of these future scenarios

[EN] 1. We investigated the simultaneous effects of cyclosporine A (CsA) treatment in rats on glutathione metabolism, oxidative status and their interorgan relationship in the liver and kidney. 2. Reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG, respectively), lipid peroxidation and the activity of several enzymes of the glutathione cycle were evaluated in adult Wistar rats treated daily (i.p.) with saline, CsA vehicle (olive oil) or CsA (10 and 20 mg/kg per day) for either 1 or 4 weeks (short- and long-term treatments, respectively). 3. Cyclosporine A treatment elicited a significant depletion in liver GSH content and a decrease in the GSH/GSSG ratio that was unrelated to either the time of treatment or the dose used; these effects were already evident after I week of treatment. Renal GSH levels remained unaffected or increased, while those of GSSG increased markedly in all CsA-treated rats, leading to decreases in the GSH/GSSG ratio, except in rats treated in the short term with the lower dose of CsA. These changes in the GSH/GSSG ratio were time and dose dependent. Short-term CsA treatment using the higher dose and long-term treatment with both doses of CsA progressively enhanced lipid peroxidation, which was reflected by increased levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in both hepatic and renal homogenates. Hepatic γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase activity was increased after long-term treatment with both doses of CsA, whereas the activity of GSH hepatic peroxidase and GSH transferase was not significantly modified in any of the experimental groups. In contrast, renal γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activity decreased in a progressive fashion, with the magnitude of this decrease being dose and time dependent. The plasma levels of total glutathione increased only in rats treated in the long term, regardless of the dose of CsA used, and remained unaltered in animals treated in the short term. 4. In summary, the data collected indicate that CsA treatment alters the interorgan homeostasis of glutathione and the oxidative status of the rat liver and kidney, which is associated with increases in lipid peroxidation in both organs, and also induces modifications in the activity of some enzyme related to the glutathione cycle

MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry Is a Fast and Reliable Platform for Identification and Ecological Studies of Species from Family Rhizobiaceae

    Get PDF
Family Rhizobiaceae includes fast growing bacteria currently arranged into three genera, Rhizobium, Ensifer and Shinella, that contain pathogenic, symbiotic and saprophytic species. The identification of these species is not possible on the basis of physiological or biochemical traits and should be based on sequencing of several genes. Therefore alternative methods are necessary for rapid and reliable identification of members from family Rhizobiaceae. In this work we evaluated the suitability of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for this purpose. Firstly, we evaluated the capability of this methodology to differentiate among species of family Rhizobiaceae including those closely related and then we extended the database of MALDI Biotyper 2.0 including the type strains of 56 species from genera Rhizobium, Ensifer and Shinella. Secondly, we evaluated the identification potential of this methodology by using several strains isolated from different sources previously identified on the basis of their rrs, recA and atpD gene sequences. The 100% of these strains were correctly identified showing that MALDI-TOF MS is an excellent tool for identification of fast growing rhizobia applicable to large populations of isolates in ecological and taxonomic studies

[EN]We pretreated with SDS 71 urine samples with bacterial counts of >10(5) CFU/ml and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) identification scores of <2, in order to minimize failure rates. Identification improved in 46.5% of samples, remained unchanged in 49.3%, and worsened in 4.2%. The improvement was more evident for Gram-negative (54.3%) than for Gram-positive (32%) bacteria
