Aggregation-Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Duality in Tetracationic Binaphthyl-Based Cyclophanes

Here, we report an approach to the synthesis of highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes by the insertion of axially chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl fluorophores into the constitutions of pyridinium-based macrocycles. Remarkably, these fluorescent tetracationic cyclophanes exhibit a significant AIE compared to their neutral optically active binaphthyl precursors. A combination of theoretical calculations and time-resolved spectroscopy reveal that the AIE originates from limited torsional vibrations associated with the axes of chirality present in the chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl units and the fine-tuning of their electronic landscape when incorporated within the cyclophane structure. Furthermore, these highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes display CPL responses both in solution and in the aggregated state. This unique duality of AIE and CPL in these tetracationic cyclophanes is destined to be of major importance in future development of photonic devices and bio-applications.National Science Foundation (NSF) DMR-2003739United States Department of Energy (DOE) DE-SC0000989SHyNE Resource NSF ECCS-2025633IINNorthwestern's MRSEC program NSF DMR-1720139MCIN/AIE EQC2019-006543-PERDF A way of making EuropeFEDER(ERDF)/Junta de Andalucia-Consejeria de Transformacion Economica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades P18-FR-287

As envisioned by the IMS (Intelligent Manufacturing Systems), Next Generation Manufacturing Systems will satisfy the needs of an increasingly fast-paced and demanding market by dynamically integrating systems from inside and outside the manufacturing firm itself into a so-called extended enterprise. However, organizing these systems to ensure the maximum flexibility and interoperability with those from other organizations is difficult. Additionally, a defect in the system would have a great impact: it would affect not only its owner, but also its partners. For these reasons, we argue that a service-oriented architecture (SOA) would be a good candidate. It should be designed following a methodology where services play a central role, instead of being an implementation detail. In order for the architecture to be reliable enough as a whole, the methodology will need to help find errors before they arise in a production environment. In this paper we propose using SOA-specific testing techniques, compare some of the existing SOA methodologies and outline several extensions upon one of them to integrate testing techniques

The following study analyzes the degree of representation and autonomy of the characters with functional diversity in Spanish fiction during prime time during the second half of 2016, 2017 and the first half of 2018. For this purpose, 1,237 characters from 47 fiction series, aired on the six national generalist channels (La 1, La 2, Antena 3, Cuatro, Telecinco, and La Sexta) have been analyzed. Through a method validated by previous studies, it has been concluded that there is an underrepresentation of 8.6 percentage points by the Spanish fiction of characters with functional diversity compared to reality, their autonomy being barely shown as individuals, both in the field of daily activities, and in the fact of starring in the narratives in which they appear. Therefore, the need to review the models of representation of social minorities in the mass media becomes apparent. In addition, expanding the study towards the analysis of audiovisual content located on online content platforms is proposed. The promotion of people and characters with functional diversity in the Spanish television industry is also proposed.

Visceral origin: an underestimated source of neck pain

The diagnosis of neck pain is challenging. Many visceral disorders are known tocause it, and clinical practice guidelines recommend to rule them out during neck pain diagnosis. However, the absence of suspicion of any cause impedes one from establishing that specific aetiology asthe final diagnosis. To investigate the degree of consideration given to visceral aetiology, a systematicsearch of trials about neck pain was carried out to evaluate their selection criteria. The search yielded309 eligible articles, which were screened by two independent reviewers. The PEDro scale score wasused to assess the methodological quality of the studies. The following information was retrieved:number of authors affiliated to a clinical or non-clinical institution, number of citations in the Webof Science, study aims, characteristics of participants, and eligibility criteria. The top 15 most citedtrials, and the 15 most recent studies about treatment efficacy in neck pain, published in first quartilejournals of the Journal Citation Reports, were selected. Females represented 67.5% of participants.A single study was of poor methodological quality (4/10). Based on the eligibility criteria of thearticles that were systematically reviewed, it would appear that visceral aetiology was not consideredin eighty percent of the trials on neck pain, showing a low level of suspicion both in research andclinical settings

Performance of the MAGIC telescopes under moonlight

    Get PDF
MAGIC, a system of two imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, achieves its best performance under dark conditions, i.e. in absence of moonlight or twilight. Since operating the telescopes only during dark time would severely limit the duty cycle, observations are also performed when the Moon is present in the sky. Here we develop a dedicated Moon-adapted analysis to characterize the performance of MAGIC under moonlight. We evaluate energy threshold, angular resolution and sensitivity of MAGIC under different background light levels, based on Crab Nebula observations and tuned Monte Carlo simulations. This study includes observations taken under non-standard hardware configurations, such as reducing the camera photomultiplier tubes gain by a factor ∼1.7 (reduced HV settings) with respect to standard settings (nominal HV) or using UV-pass filters to strongly reduce the amount of moonlight reaching the cameras of the telescopes. The Crab Nebula spectrum is correctly reconstructed in all the studied illumination levels, that reach up to 30 times brighter than under dark conditions. The main effect of moonlight is an increase in the analysis energy threshold and in the systematic uncertainties on the flux normalization. The sensitivity degradation is constrained to be below 10%, within 15-30% and between 60 and 80% for nominal HV, reduced HV and UV-pass filter observations, respectively. No worsening of the angular resolution was found. Thanks to observations during moonlight, the maximal duty cycle of MAGIC can be increased from ∼18%, under dark nights only, to up to∼40% in total with only moderate performance degradation

Search for very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from the microquasar Cygnus X-1 with the MAGIC telescopes

The microquasar Cygnus X-1 displays the two typical soft and hard X-ray states of a black hole transient. During the latter, Cygnus X-1 shows a one-sided relativistic radio-jet. Recent detection of the system in the high energy (HE; E greater than or similar to 60 MeV) gamma-ray range with FermiLAT associates this emission with the outflow. Former MAGIC observations revealed a hint of flaring activity in the very high-energy (VHE; E greater than or similar to 100 GeV) regime during this X-ray state. We analyse ~ to 97 h of Cygnus X-1 data taken with the MAGIC telescopes between July 2007 and October 2014. To shed light on the correlation between hard X-ray and VHE gamma rays as previously suggested, we study each main X-ray state separately. We perform an orbital phase-folded analysis to look for variability in the VHE band. Additionally, to place this variability behaviour in a multiwavelength context, we compare our results with Fermi-LAT, AGILE, Swift-BAT, MAXI, RXTE-ASM, AMI and RATAN-600 data. We do not detect Cygnus X-1 in the VHE regime. We establish upper limits for each X-ray state, assuming a power-law distribution with photon index Γ = 3.2. For steady emission in the hard and soft X-ray states, we set integral upper limits at 95 %per cent confidence level for energies above 200 GeV at 2.6 x 10⁻¹² photons cm⁻² s⁻¹ and 1.0 x 10⁻¹¹ photons cm⁻² s ⁻¹, respectively. We rule out steady VHE gamma-ray emission above this energy range, at the level of theMAGIC sensitivity, originating in the interaction between the relativistic jet and the surrounding medium, while the emission above this flux level produced inside the binary still remains a valid possibility
