Electromagnetic fields and transport coefficients in a hot pion gas

    Get PDF
We present recent results on finite temperature electromagnetic form factors and the electrical conductivity in a pion gas. The standard Chiral Perturbation Theory power counting needs to be modified for transport coefficients. We pay special attention to unitarity and to possible applications for dilepton and photon production.Comment: 4pp, 2 figures, talk given at "Strong and Electroweak Matter 2006", BNL, May 200

Transport coefficients of a massive pion gas

    Get PDF
We review or main results concerning the transport coefficients of a light meson gas, in particular we focus on the case of a massive pion gas. Leading order results according to the chiral power-counting are presented for the DC electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, shear viscosity, and bulk viscosity. We also comment on the possible correlation between the bulk viscosity and the trace anomaly in QCD, as well as the relation between unitarity and a minimum of the quotient η/s\eta/s near the phase transition.Comment: Talk given at the 5th International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics (QNP09), Beijing, September 21-26, 200

Chiral symmetry and mesons in hot and dense matter: recent developments

    Get PDF
We review recent results on properties of the meson gas relevant for Heavy Ion Collision and Nuclear Matter experiments, within the framework of chiral lagrangians. In particular, we describe the temperature and density evolution of the σ\sigma and ρ\rho poles and its connection with chiral symmetry restoration, as well as the chemical nonequilibrated phase and transport coefficients.Comment: Proceedings of the "Chiral10 International Workshop on Chiral Symmetry in Hadrons and Nuclei", Valencia, Spain, 21-24 june 2010. 9 pages, 5 figures. Yanagi, Ceramics and the Craft Values of Korean Aesthetics

    Get PDF
The long Japanese tradition of Korean ceramics appreciation, closely associated with the Zen tea ceremony (chanoyu), has played an important role in the development of Korean aesthetics in the twentieth century. The art critic and philosopher Yanagi Soetsu was instrumental in this process during the occupation period, since, continuing in this tradition, he particularly valued Joseon ceramics for their aesthetic qualities - such as naturalness, nonchalance, and simplicity - akin to praised values in Zen Buddhism. Yanagi’s pioneering writings might have been influential in the prevalence of those traits when defining Korean art and aesthetics in general. After a brief presentation of key expressions defining Korean art and aesthetics, the paper focuses on Yanagi’s aesthetic assessment of Joseon ceramics and particularly on his proposal of its appreciation beyond the modern Western division between art and craft.

Alternative method for the metrological characterization of spur gears in the sub-millimeter range using optical equipment

    Get PDF
The aim of this work is to develop a software that allows the inspection of spur gear manufactured in the sub-millimeter range. The measurements are made using a digital optical machine and using an analysis proprietary software implemented in Matlab®, which is able to handle images, captured using the digital optical machine. The software allows to evaluate the profile and pitch deviations as establish in the ISO/TR 10064-1:1992 standar

A barley PHD finger transcription factor that confers male sterility by affecting tapetal development

    Get PDF
Controlling pollen development is of major commercial importance in generating hybrid crops and selective breeding, but characterized genes for male sterility in crops are rare, with no current examples in barley. However, translation of knowledge from model species is now providing opportunities to understand and manipulate such processes in economically important crops. We have used information from regulatory networks in Arabidopsis to identify and functionally characterize a barley PHD transcription factor MALE STERTILITY1 (MS1), which expresses in the anther tapetum and plays a critical role during pollen development. Comparative analysis of Arabidopsis, rice and Brachypodium genomes was used to identify conserved regions in MS1 for primer design to amplify the barley MS1 gene; RACE-PCR was subsequently used to generate the full-length sequence. This gene shows anther-specific tapetal expression, between late tetrad stage and early microspore release. HvMS1 silencing and overexpression in barley resulted in male sterility. Additionally, HvMS1 cDNA, controlled by the native Arabidopsis MS1 promoter, successfully complemented the homozygous ms1 Arabidopsis mutant. These results confirm the conservation of MS1 function in higher plants and in particular in temperate cereals. This has provided the first example of a characterized male sterility gene in barley, which presents a valuable tool for the future control of male fertility in barley for hybrid development

Get PDF
Researching simulation/implementation of membranes systems is very recent. Present literature gathers new publications frequently about software/hardware, data structures and algorithms for implementing P system evolution. In this context, this work presents a framework which goal is to make tasks of researchers of this field easier. Hence, it establishes the set of cooperating classes that form a reusable and flexible design for the customizable evaluation with new data structures and algorithms. Moreover, it includes customizable services for correcting, monitoring and logging the evolution and edition, recovering, automatic generating, persistence and visualizing P systems
