Molecular Realism in Default Models for Information Theories of Hydrophobic Effects
This letter considers several physical arguments about contributions to
hydrophobic hydration of inert gases, constructs default models to test them
within information theories, and gives information theory predictions using
those default models with moment information drawn from simulation of liquid
water. Tested physical features include: packing or steric effects, the role of
attractive forces that lower the solvent pressure, and the roughly tetrahedral
coordination of water molecules in liquid water. Packing effects (hard sphere
default model) and packing effects plus attractive forces (Lennard-Jones
default model) are ineffective in improving the prediction of hydrophobic
hydration free energies of inert gases over the previously used Gibbs and flat
default models. However, a conceptually simple cluster Poisson model that
incorporates tetrahedral coordination structure in the default model is one of
the better performers for these predictions. These results provide a partial
rationalization of the remarkable performance of the flat default model with
two moments in previous applications. The cluster Poisson default model thus

Hamara Healthy Living Centre - an evaluation
Hamara is a Healthy Living Centre which aims to improve health and well-being through providing a range of culturally appropriate activities and services. Hamara has a vision of 'bringing communities together' and since it was established in 2004, the Centre has provided a valuable community resource in South Leeds. Partnership work between Hamara and Leeds Met goes back to 2002. In 2007, the Centre for Health Promotion Research carried out an evaluation of Hamara in partnership with Hamara staff and Leeds Met Community Partnerships and Volunteering. This was followed by a highly successful community cohesion conference 'One Community' which was held at Hamara on 10th October 2008, and was supported through a Leeds Met public engagement grant. The event attracted over a hundred people from diverse communities and organisations across Leeds. A packed audience heard Hilary Benn, local MP and Patron of Hamara, talk about the importance of working in collaboration around community cohesion. Jane South, Centre for Health Promotion Research, presented the main evaluation results and set out the some challenges for the future. The proceedings concluded with the presentation of awards to a number of for local community champions who work to bring people together and make a real difference in the city of Leeds
Pair Plasma Dominance in the Parsec-Scale Relativistic Jet of 3C345
We investigate whether a pc-scale jet of 3C345 is dominated by a normal
plasma or an electron-positron plasma. We present a general condition that a
jet component becomes optically thick for synchrotron self-absorption, by
extending the method originally developed by Reynolds et al. The general
condition gives a lower limit of the electron number density, with the aid of
the surface brightness condition, which enables us to compute the magnetic
field density. Comparing the lower limit with another independent constraint
for the electron density that is deduced from the kinetic luminosity, we can
distinguish the matter content. We apply the procedure to the five components
of 3C345 (C2, C3, C4, C5, and C7) of which angular diameters and radio fluxes
at the peak frequencies were obtainable from literature. Evaluating the
representative values of Doppler beaming factors by their equipartition values,
we find that all the five components are likely dominated by an
electron-positron plasma. The conclusion does not depend on the lower cutoff
energy of the power-law distribution of radiating particles.Comment: 17 page
Evaluation of LS-DYNA MAT162 for Modeling Composite Fastener Joints for High Rates of Loading
In the present work, the behavior of composite-fastener joints in bearing failure at dynamic stroke rates of 500 in/s, 300 in/s and 100 in/s has been evaluated through progressive damage analysis (PDA) material model in LS-DYNA, namely MAT162. Two joint types: titanium pin and Hi-Lok fastener were analyzed to identify the differences between without and with preload conditions. A meso-level approach where each lamina was modeled separately was employed and a contact definition based on fracture toughness data was defined to represent composite delamination behavior. Test fixture had been modeled in a detailed manner to account for the dynamic effects and the simulation results were validated against experimental data. Preliminary test-analysis correlation indicated that MAT162 predicted results conservatively when compared to tests. Debris accumulation were observed to greatly affect the test results which were not considered in the current modelling strategies
Acoustic wave propagation through eco-friendly porous panels at normal incidence
Human and non-human subjects are exposed to micro plastics through drink, food, and air. Micro-plastics
propagating through atmosphere are breathable particles during inhalation and exhalation leading to
deposition of them in the deep lung via the alveoli of the lungs. Teabags are made of plastics that are not
recyclable and biodegradable. Therefore, we intend to remove used teabags from the natural environment
by repurposing them to make sound attenuating panels for building and architectural industries, contributing
in this way to a sustainable circular economy. The panels were designed and developed from consumed
teabags as porous material by filling a frame to investigate acoustics wave propagation through them at
normal incidence. Experimental testing was carried out on circular teabag panels in an impedance tube
using a transfer function method to determine their sound absorption coefficient and transmission loss.
Furthermore, the impedance gun method was used to determine the absorption properties of square panels.
Results show that 75 mm thick circular panels give an absorption coefficient higher than 0.8 between 400
and 1600 Hz. Up-to 9.8 dB sound transmission loss of circular panels is obtained at higher frequencies.
Absorption coefficients for square teabag panels are very good despite a coincidence-dip seen at 800 Hz. The
satisfactory sound absorption and sound transmission characteristics of acoustic panels made of consumed
tea bags can make this recycled material a cost-effective solution in the production of sustainable acoustic
treatment in indoor spaces. The results suggest that recycling of consumed teabag as the panel could be
applied as alternative sound absorbing materials
Spinor Dynamics in an Antiferromagnetic Spin-1 Condensate
We observe coherent spin oscillations in an antiferromagnetic spin-1
Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium. The variation of the spin oscillations with
magnetic field shows a clear signature of nonlinearity, in agreement with
theory, which also predicts anharmonic oscillations near a critical magnetic
field. Measurements of the magnetic phase diagram agree with predictions made
in the approximation of a single spatial mode. The oscillation period yields
the best measurement to date of the sodium spin-dependent interaction
coefficient, determining that the difference between the sodium spin-dependent

Effective penetration length and interstitial vortex pinning in superconducting films with regular arrays of defects
In order to compare magnetic and non-magnetic pinning we have nanostructured
two superconducting films with regular arrays of pinning centers: Cu
(non-magnetic) dots in one case, and Py (magnetic) dots in the other. For low
applied magnetic fields, when all the vortices are pinned in the artificial
inclusions, magnetic dots prove to be better pinning centers, as has been
generally accepted. Unexpectedly, when the magnetic field is increased and
interstitial vortices appear, the results are very different: we show how the
stray field generated by the magnetic dots can produce an effective reduction
of the penetration length. This results in strong consequences in the transport
properties, which, depending on the dot separation, can lead to an enhancement
or worsening of the transport characteristics. Therefore, the election of the
magnetic or non-magnetic character of the pinning sites for an effective
reduction of dissipation will depend on the range of the applied magnetic

Cassiopeia A: dust factory revealed via submillimetre polarimetry
If Type-II supernovae - the evolutionary end points of short-lived, massive
stars - produce a significant quantity of dust (>0.1 M_sun) then they can
explain the rest-frame far-infrared emission seen in galaxies and quasars in
the first Gyr of the Universe. Submillimetre observations of the Galactic
supernova remnant, Cas A, provided the first observational evidence for the
formation of significant quantities of dust in Type-II supernovae. In this
paper we present new data which show that the submm emission from Cas A is
polarised at a level significantly higher than that of its synchrotron
emission. The orientation is consistent with that of the magnetic field in Cas
A, implying that the polarised submm emission is associated with the remnant.
No known mechanism would vary the synchrotron polarisation in this way and so
we attribute the excess polarised submm flux to cold dust within the remnant,
providing fresh evidence that cosmic dust can form rapidly. This is supported
by the presence of both polarised and unpolarised dust emission in the north of
the remnant, where there is no contamination from foreground molecular clouds.
The inferred dust polarisation fraction is unprecedented (f_pol ~ 30%) which,
coupled with the brief timescale available for grain alignment (<300 yr),
suggests that supernova dust differs from that seen in other Galactic sources
(where f_pol=2-7%), or that a highly efficient grain alignment process must
