Walter Brut\u27s Utilization of Profeminine Rhetoric Towards Ecclesiastic Reformation
This thesis examines the means by which Walter Brut, a fourteenth-century gentryman, exerted his rhetorical influence in order to change the fourteenth-century Church. Divided into three chapters, this study translates some of Brut\u27s most controversial statements into five component tenets, through which this argues Brut exerts his said-rhetoric. Further, Brut\u27s rhetoric is corroborated and put into dialogue with the voices of two contemporaneous female writers, thereby evidencing the impact of what this little-known layman did, in his challenge to Church authority

IMPACT OF CONDITIONAL JOB OFFER ON APPLICANT REACTIONS TO SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE SELECTION PROCESS
Social media (SM) permits the sharing of personal information online, which can lead to employers accessing personal, non-job-related information about applicants throughout the selection process. Limited prior research (Jeske & Shultz, in press; Stoughton et al., 2015) has found that, to varying degrees, applicants find this access of their personal information to be an invasion of their personal privacy. The aim of the present study was to replicate prior findings regarding invasion of privacy moderating the relationship between SM screening presence and procedural justice perceptions and to expand on prior research by exploring whether the stage at which this information was collected (pre- and post- conditional job offer) would mediate the relationship between SM screening and perceived invasion of privacy. A survey was administered electronically and participants (N = 210) were randomly assigned to one of four SM screening conditions: (a) SM screening absent, job offer absent, (b) SM screening absent, job offer present, (c) SM screening present, job offer absent, and (d) SM screening present, job offer present. One component of the hypothesized model was supported, that those in the SM screening groups reported higher levels of perceived invasion of privacy as compared to the no SM screening groups. No interaction effects were found between SM screening and stage in the selection process on either perceived invasion of privacy or procedural justice perceptions, indicating limited to no support for the proposed model. Thus, alternative, more robust contextual models for the examination of SM screening in the selection process were proposed for future research
Realism & Language: How Luis Alberto Urrea Uses Bilingualism to Elevate His Works of Realism
The trajectory of writer Luis Alberto Urrea stems from autobiography, poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, yet his works are not widely taught in academic settings, nor is there substantial scholarly work discussed on his published works. This thesis focuses on Urrea’s trajectory in order to situate him as a realist writer, as I discuss Urrea alongside Amy Kaplan and Ramón J. Guerra. Alongside this I will also focus on his most unique aspect of realist writing that sets him apart from other realist writers, his use of English and Spanish within his works that forms itself into bilingualism. I will look into three examples of Urrea’s published works: Across The Wire: Life and Times on the Mexican Border (1993) details Urrea’s own experiences along the border as he educates readers on the lives, conditions, and language on the borderlands, The Tijuana Book of the Dead Poems (2015) depicts the blending of language within poetry alongside the experiences of Mexican-American immigrants, The House of Broken Angels (2019) describes a Mexican-American immigrant family’s struggles as they both mourn and celebrate over several days who simultaneously show a blending of English and Spanish known only at a familial level. I argue that Luis Alberto Urrea’s works require a deeper, academic discussion to allow for his realistic depictions to leave an impression on his readers, alongside placing Urrea within the realist tradition with his addition of language use. In looking at these works, a new aspect of realism has the ability to come forward within literature as we see Urrea use language in a progressive way. Across The Wire: Life and Times on the Mexican Border (1993) shows Urrea using Spanish to bring readers closer to the culture of those he describes. The Tijuana Book of the Dead Poems (2015) shows the coming together of the languages to depict experiences. The House of Broken Angels (2019) has a more colloquial take on language as Urrea uses it to show the intricacies of a domestic Mexican-American immigrants life. In placing these works in discussion together we can see how Urrea is depicting Latino/a realism
OPTIMAL QUANTIZATION FOR MIXED DISTRIBUTIONS GENERATED BY TWO UNIFORM DISTRIBUTIONS
In this paper, for mixed distributions generated by two uniform distributions we investigate the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization errors for all positive integers n. Some conjectures and open problems are also given
SN 2016iet: The Pulsational or Pair Instability Explosion of a Low Metallicity Massive CO Core Embedded in a Dense Hydrogen-Poor Circumstellar Medium
We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2016iet, an
unprecedented Type I supernova (SN) at with no obvious analog in the
existing literature. The peculiar light curve has two roughly equal brightness
peaks ( mag) separated by 100 days, and a subsequent slow decline
by 5 mag in 650 rest-frame days. The spectra are dominated by emission lines of
calcium and oxygen, with a width of only km s, superposed on a
strong blue continuum in the first year, and with a large ratio of at late times. There is no clear evidence
for hydrogen or helium associated with the SN at any phase. We model the light
curves with several potential energy sources: radioactive decay, central
engine, and circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction. Regardless of the model,
the inferred progenitor mass near the end of its life (i.e., CO core mass) is
M and up to M, placing the event in the
regime of pulsational pair instability supernovae (PPISNe) or pair instability
supernovae (PISNe). The models of CSM interaction provide the most consistent
explanation for the light curves and spectra, and require a CSM mass of
M ejected in the final decade before explosion. We further
find that SN 2016iet is located at an unusually large offset ( kpc) from
its low metallicity dwarf host galaxy ( Z, M), supporting the PPISN/PISN interpretation. In the final
spectrum, we detect narrow H emission at the SN location, likely due to
a dim underlying galaxy host or an H II region. Despite the overall consistency
of the SN and its unusual environment with PPISNe and PISNe, we find that the
inferred properties of SN\,2016iet challenge existing models of such events.Comment: 26 Pages, 17 Figures, Submitted to Ap
Evaluation of an Arrival Coordinator Position in a Terminal Metering Enviornment
NASA has developed an integrated arrival-management solution for terminal area precision scheduling (TAPSS). Ahuman-in-the-loop simulation investigated the performance of the components of the TAPSS system. The focus ofthis paper is set on the terminal radar approach control (TRACON) traffic management controller (TMC) and ArrivalRadar Coordinator (ARC) combined position, which played an integral part in coordinating, adjusting, and instantiatingthe arrival schedule computed by the TAPSS system. Analysis of the simulation data highlights the roleof the ARC within the described terminal metering environment, describes his planning strategies, the interactionswith his tools and coordination with controllers, and lends insights to the impact of the ARCs actions to the arrivalproblem. High levels of comfort and confidence were reported when working with the TAPSS system. Challengesposed the sequencing of unscheduled satellite arrival flights during periods of peak demand. To accommodate thoseflights into the arrival stream, the ARC had to identify sequence slots, while minimizing disruptions to the schedule
The Luminous and Double-Peaked Type Ic Supernova 2019stc: Evidence for Multiple Energy Sources
We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of SN\,2019stc
(=ZTF19acbonaa), an unusual Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) at a redshift of
. SN\,2019stc exhibits a broad double-peaked light curve, with the
first peak having an absolute magnitude of mag, and the second
peak, about 80 rest-frame days later, mag. The total radiated
energy is large, erg. Despite its large
luminosity, approaching those of Type I superluminous supernovae (SLSNe),
SN\,2019stc exhibits a typical SN Ic spectrum, bridging the gap between SLSNe
and SNe Ic. The spectra indicate the presence of Fe-peak elements, but modeling
of the first light curve peak with radioactive heating alone leads to an
unusually high nickel mass fraction of ( M). Instead, if we model the first peak with a combined
magnetar spin-down and radioactive heating model we find a better match with
M, a magnetar spin period of ms and magnetic field of G, and (consistent with SNe Ic). The prominent second peak cannot be naturally
accommodated with radioactive heating or magnetar spin-down, but instead can be
explained as circumstellar interaction with of
hydrogen-free material located AU from the progenitor. Including
the remnant mass leads to a CO core mass prior to explosion of
M. The host galaxy has a metallicity of Z, low
for SNe Ic but consistent with SLSNe. Overall, we find that SN\,2019stc is a
transition object between normal SNe Ic and SLSNe.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, Accepted to Ap
Information Displays and Crew Configurations for UTM Operations
In this paper we discuss how team configuration may influence how infor-mation is shared among team members for low-altitude Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) operations. NASA collected and analyzed observation data gathered during a series of field tests for the UAS Traffic Management (UTM) project. The field tests were part of a larger effort aimed at advancing the UTM concept, conducted at six test-sites spread across the USA. Ground control station (GCS) concepts, flight-crew composition, and crew-size var-ied within and across test-sites. Flight crews took two strategic approaches to organizing their teams. The first of the two approaches was implemented by one third of the flight crews. These crews integrated the role of UTM opera-tor into the duties of existing crew members, merging the current roles with this new one, keeping the UTM Operator collocated with the flight crew. The remaining two thirds implemented a distributed team configuration, where a single UTM operator distributed support across multiple crews. Results from our data collection efforts revealed that UTM Operator location influenced whether flight crews used verbal communication versus displays to acquire UTM information
How do Air Traffic Controllers Use Automation and Tools Differently During High Demand Situations?
In a human-in-the-loop simulation, two air traffic controllers managed identical airspace while burdened with higher than average workload, and while using advanced tools and automation designed to assist with scheduling aircraft on multiple arrival flows to a single meter fix. This paper compares the strategies employed by each controller, and investigates how the controllers' strategies change while managing their airspace under more normal workload conditions and a higher workload condition. Each controller engaged in different methods of maneuvering aircraft to arrive on schedule, and adapted their strategies to cope with the increased workload in different ways. Based on the conclusions three suggestions are made: that quickly providing air traffic controllers with recommendations and information to assist with maneuvering and scheduling aircraft when burdened with increased workload will improve the air traffic controller's effectiveness, that the tools should adapt to the strategy currently employed by a controller, and that training should emphasize which traffic management strategies are most effective given specific airspace demands
Effects of okadaic acid on the activities of two distinct phosphatidate phosphohydrolases in rat hepatocytes
AbstractIncubation of hepatocytes with okadaic acid displaced the N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive phosphatidate phosphohydrolase from the membrane fraction into the cytosol and partially prevented the oleate-induced movement of phosphohydrolase from cytosol to membranes. However, higher concentrations of oleate still caused translocation and activation of the phosphohydrolase. This enzyme is stimulated by Mg2+, and is probably involved in glycerolipid synthesis. Okadaic acid also decreased the concentration of diacylglycerol within the hepatocytes. Okadaic acid had no observable effect on the activity of an N-ethylmaleimide-insensitive phosphatidate phosphohydrolase which remained firmly attached to membranes. This activity is not stimulated by Mg2+ and is probably involved in signal transduction by the phospholipase D pathway
