Baseline information on prokaryotic and microeukaryotic plankton communities inside and outside of Indonesian marine lakes

Marine lakes represent a unique and globally rare aquatic environment characterised by lower salinities and pH and higher temperatures than the surrounding open water environment. Here we provide baseline data on planktonic communities of Archaea, Bacteria and microeukaryotes inside and outside (open water habitat) of three marine lakes (Kakaban, Haji Buang and Tanah Bamban) in the Berau region of Indonesia. Compositional variation was highly congruent with the major axis of variation separating open water from marine lake samples for all three domains. Planktonic Archaea mainly consisted of OTUs assigned to Euryarchaeota that were closely related to organisms in Genbank previously obtained from seawater samples. The majority of archaeal OTUs were most abundant in open water habitat with a few OTUs abundant in all habitats. Most bacterial sequences were assigned to Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidetes with the percentage of Cyanobacteria highest in two of the marine lakes and lowest in the remaining lake (Tanah Bamban). In contrast to Archaea, there were a number of bacterial OTUs that were markedly more abundant in marine lake habitat. Most microeukaryote sequences were assigned to the Alveolata, Stramenopiles, Opisthokonta, Archaeplastida and Hacrobia. As was the case with Bacteria, a number of abundant microeukaryote OTUs were more abundant in marine lake habitat. Our results thus indicate similar compositional responses to the environmental conditions in marine lake habitat across the major domains of life and point to marine lakes harbouring distinct microbial communities.publishe

Vertex Operators and Soliton Solutions of Affine Toda Model with U(2) Symmetry

The symmetry structure of non-abelian affine Toda model based on the coset SL(3)/SL(2)U(1)SL(3)/SL(2)\otimes U(1) is studied. It is shown that the model possess non-abelian Noether symmetry closing into a q-deformed SL(2)U(1)SL(2)\otimes U(1) algebra. Specific two vertex soliton solutions are constructed.Comment: 17 pages, latex, misprints corrected, version to appear in J.Phys

Chiral symmetry breaking in QED3{\rm QED}_{3} in presence of irrelevant interactions: a renormalization group study

Motivated by recent theoretical approaches to high temperature superconductivity, we study dynamical mass generation in three dimensional quantum electrodynamics QED3{\rm QED}_{3}) in presence of irrelevant four-fermion quartic terms. The problem is reformulated in terms of the renormalization group flows of certain four-fermion couplings and charge, and then studied in the limit of large number of fermion flavors NN. We find that the critical number of fermions NcN_c below which the mass becomes dynamically generated depends continuously on a weak chiral-symmetry-breaking interaction. One-loop calculation in our gauge-invariant approach yields Nc0=6N_{c0} = 6 in pure QED3{\rm QED}_3. We also find that chiral-symmetry-preserving mass cannot become dynamically generated in pure QED3{\rm QED}_{3}.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Generalized Hermite-Gauss decomposition of the two-photon state produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion

We provide a general decomposition of the two-photon state produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in Hermite-Gaussian modes, in the case that the pump beam is described by a Hermite-Gaussian beam of any order. We show that the spatial correlations depend explicitly on the order of the pump beam, as well as other experimental parameters. We use the decomposition to demonstrate a few interesting cases. Our results are applicable to the engineering of two-photon spatial entanglement, in particular for non-Gaussian states.Comment: 14 page draft, 5 figure

Nontrivial temporal scaling in a Galilean stick-slip dynamics

We examine the stick-slip fluctuating response of a rough massive non-rotating cylinder moving on a rough inclined groove which is submitted to weak external perturbations and which is maintained well below the angle of repose. The experiments presented here, which are reminiscent of the Galileo's works with rolling objects on inclines, have brought in the last years important new insights into the friction between surfaces in relative motion and are of relevance for earthquakes, differing from classical block-spring models by the mechanism of energy input in the system. Robust nontrivial temporal scaling laws appearing in the dynamics of this system are reported, and it is shown that the time-support where dissipation occurs approaches a statistical fractal set with a fixed value of dimension. The distribution of periods of inactivity in the intermittent motion of the cylinder is also studied and found to be closely related to the lacunarity of a random version of the classic triadic Cantor set on the line.Comment: 7 pages including 6 figure
