    Occupational choice, number of entrepreneurs and output: theory and empirical evidence with Spanish data

    This paper extends the (Lucas, Bell J Econ 9:508–523,1978) model of occupational choices by individuals with different skills, beyond the simple options of self-employment or wage-employment, by including a second choice for the self-employed. That is, an option to hire employees and so become self-employed with employees (SEWEs), or to be self-employed without employees (SEWNEs). We solve for the market equilibrium and examine the sensitivity of relative sizes of occupational groups, and of the level of productivity, to changes in the exogenous parameters. The results show that the positive (negative) association between number of SEWEs (SEWNEs) and productivity, observed in the Spanish data, can be explained, under certain conditions, as the result of cross-region and time differences in average skills. These findings point to the importance of distinguishing between SEWEs and SEWNEs in drawing valid conclusions concerning any link between entrepreneurship and economic development

    Food and agricultural innovation pathways for prosperity

    This introduction to the special issue deploys a framework, inspired by realist synthesis and introduced in Section 1, that aims to untangle the contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes associated with investments that link poverty reduction and rural prosperity within a broad agri-food systems perspective. Section 2 considers changes in contexts: Where are agricultural research investments most likely to be an engine of poverty reduction? Over the past 25 years, there have been profound changes in the development context of most countries, necessitating an update on strategic insights for research investment priorities relevant for the economic, political, social, environmental, and structural realities of the early 21st Century. Section 2 briefly surveys changes in these structural aspects of poverty and development processes in low-income countries, with particular attention to new drivers (e.g., urbanization, climate change) that will be of increasing salience in the coming decades. In Section 3, we turn to mechanisms: What are the plausible impact pathways and what evidence exists to test their plausibility? Poor farmers in the developing world are often the stated focus of public sector agricultural research. However, farmers are not the only potential beneficiaries of agricultural research; rural landless laborers, stakeholders along food value chains, and the urban poor can also be major beneficiaries of such research. Thus, there are multiple, interacting pathways through which agricultural research can contribute to reductions in poverty and associated livelihood vulnerabilities. This paper introduces an ex ante set of 18 plausible impact pathways from agricultural research to rural prosperity outcomes, employing bibliometric methods to assess the evidence underpinning causal links. In Section 4, we revisit the concept of desired impacts: When we seek poverty reduction, what does that mean and what measures are needed to demonstrate impact? The papers in this special issue are intended to yield insights to inform improvements in agricultural research that seeks to reduce poverty. History indicates that equity of distribution of gains matters hugely, and thus the questions of “who wins?” and “who loses?” must be addressed. Moreover, our understanding(s) of “poverty” and the intended outcomes of development investments have become much richer over the past 25 years, incorporating more nuance regarding gender, community differences, and fundamental reconsideration of the meaning of poverty and prosperity that are not captured by simple head count income or even living standard measures

    Determination of the Michel Parameters and the tau Neutrino Helicity in tau Decay

    Using the CLEO II detector at the e+ee^+e^- storage ring CESR, we have determined the Michel parameters ρ\rho, ξ\xi, and δ\delta in τlννˉ\tau^\mp \to l^\mp\nu\bar{\nu} decay as well as the tau neutrino helicity parameter hντh_{\nu_\tau} in τππ0ν\tau^\mp \to \pi^\mp\pi^0\nu decay. From a data sample of 3.02×1063.02\times 10^6 tau pairs produced at s=10.6GeV\sqrt{s}=10.6 GeV, using events of the topology e+eτ+τ(l±ννˉ)(ππ0ν)e^+e^- \to \tau^+\tau^- \to (l^\pm\nu\bar{\nu}) (\pi^\mp\pi^0\nu) and e+eτ+τ(π±π0νˉ)(ππ0ν)e^+e^- \to \tau^+\tau^- \to (\pi^\pm\pi^0\bar{\nu}) (\pi^\mp\pi^0\nu), and the determined sign of hντh_{\nu_\tau}, the combined result of the three samples is: ρ=0.747±0.010±0.006\rho = 0.747\pm 0.010\pm 0.006, ξ=1.007±0.040±0.015\xi = 1.007\pm 0.040\pm 0.015, ξδ=0.745±0.026±0.009\xi\delta = 0.745\pm 0.026\pm 0.009, and hντ=0.995±0.010±0.003h_{\nu_\tau} = -0.995\pm 0.010\pm 0.003.     Further Search for the Two-Photon Production of the Glueball Candidate fJ(2220)f_{J}(2220)

    The CLEOII detector at the Cornell e+ e- storage ring CESR has been used to search for the two-photon production of the fJ(2220)f_J(2220) decaying into pi+ pi-. No evidence for a signal is found in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.77/fb and a 95% CL upper limit on ΓtwophotonBRpi+pi\Gamma_{two-photon} * BR{pi+ pi-} of 2.5 eV is set. If this result is combined with the BES Collaboration's measurement of fJ(2220)>pi+pif_J(2220) -> pi+ pi- in radiative J/ψJ/\psi decay, a 95% CL lower limit on the stickiness of the fJ(2220)f_J(2220) of 73 is obtained. If the recent CLEO result for \Gamma_{two-photon} * BR{\K_S K_S} is combined with the present result, the stickiness of the fJ(2220)f_J(2220) is found to be larger than 102 at the 95% CL. These results for the stickiness (the ratio of the probabilities for two-gluon coupling and two-photon coupling) provide further support for a substantial neutral parton content in the fJ(2220)f_J(2220).Comment: 8 pages, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell electron-positron storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate f_J(2220) in its decay to K_s K_s. We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K_s K_s branching fraction. We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling.     Search for Exclusive Charmless Hadronic B Decays

    We have searched for two-body charmless hadronic decays of BB mesons. Final states include ππ\pi\pi, KπK \pi, and KKKK with both charged and neutral kaons and pions; πρ\pi\rho, KρK \rho, and KπK^*\pi; and KϕK\phi, Kϕ K^*\phi, and ϕϕ\phi\phi. The data used in this analysis consist of 2.6~million BBˉB\bar{B}~pairs produced at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) taken with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We measure the branching fraction of the sum of B0π+πB^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^- and B0K+πB^0 \rightarrow K^+\pi^- to be (1.80.50.3+0.6+0.2±0.2)×105(1.8^{+0.6+0.2}_{-0.5-0.3}\pm0.2) \times 10^{-5}.     Precision Measurement of the Ds+Ds+D_s^{*+}- D_s^+ Mass Difference

    We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting M(Ds+)M(Ds+)=144.22±0.47±0.37MeVM(D_s^{*+})-M(D_s^+) = 144.22\pm 0.47\pm 0.37 MeV, significantly more precise than the previous world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the vector-pseudoscalar mass difference M(D0)M(D0)M(D^{*0})-M(D^0) using the radiative decay D0D0γD^{*0}\rightarrow D^0\gamma, obtaining [M(Ds+)M(Ds+)][M(D0)M(D0)]=2.09±0.47±0.37MeV[M(D_s^{*+})-M(D_s^+)]-[M(D^{*0})-M(D^0)] = 2.09\pm 0.47\pm 0.37 MeV. This is then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of M(D0)M(D0)M(D^{*0})-M(D^0), which used the decay D0D0π0D^{*0}\rightarrow D^0\pi^0. We also measure the mass difference M(Ds+)M(D+)=99.5±0.6±0.3M(D_s^+)-M(D^+)=99.5\pm 0.6\pm 0.3 MeV, using the ϕπ+\phi\pi^+ decay modes of the Ds+D_s^+ and D+D^+ mesons.Comment: 18 pages uuencoded compressed postscript (process with uudecode then gunzip). hardcopies with figures can be obtained by sending mail to: [email protected]

    Observation of the Isospin-Violating Decay Ds+Ds+π0D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\pi^0

    Using data collected with the CLEO~II detector, we have observed the isospin-violating decay Ds+Ds+π0D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\pi^0. The decay rate for this mode, relative to the dominant radiative decay, is found to be Γ(Ds+Ds+π0)/Γ(Ds+Ds+γ)=0.0620.018+0.020±0.022\Gamma(D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\pi^0)/\Gamma(D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\gamma)= 0.062^{+0.020}_{-0.018}\pm0.022.Comment: 8 page uuencoded postscript file, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN
