    Remark on the (Non)convergence of Ensemble Densities in Dynamical Systems

    We consider a dynamical system with state space MM, a smooth, compact subset of some Rn{\Bbb R}^n, and evolution given by TtT_t, xt=Ttxx_t = T_t x, xMx \in M; TtT_t is invertible and the time tt may be discrete, tZt \in {\Bbb Z}, Tt=TtT_t = T^t, or continuous, tRt \in {\Bbb R}. Here we show that starting with a continuous positive initial probability density ρ(x,0)>0\rho(x,0) > 0, with respect to dxdx, the smooth volume measure induced on MM by Lebesgue measure on Rn{\Bbb R}^n, the expectation value of logρ(x,t)\log \rho(x,t), with respect to any stationary (i.e. time invariant) measure ν(dx)\nu(dx), is linear in tt, ν(logρ(x,t))=ν(logρ(x,0))+Kt\nu(\log \rho(x,t)) = \nu(\log \rho(x,0)) + Kt.     The formation of arcs in the dynamic spectra of Jovian decameter bursts

    A model is presented that can account for several features of the dynamic spectral arcs observed at decameter wavelengths by the planetary radio astronomy experiment on Voyagers 1 and 2. It is shown that refraction of an extraordinary mode wave initially excited nearly orthogonal to the local magnetic field is significantly influenced by the local plasma density, being greater the higher the density. It is assumed that the source of the decameter radiation lies along the L = 6 flux tube and that the highest frequencies are produced at the lowest altitudes, where both the plasma density and magnetic field gradients are largest. It is further assumed that the decameter radiation is emitted into a thin conical sheet, consistent with both observation and theory. In the model the emission cone angle of the sheet is chosen to vary with frequency so that it is relatively small at both high and low frequencies, but approximately 80 deg at intermediate frequencies. The resulting emission pattern as seen by a distant observer is shown to resemble the observed arc pattern. The model is compared and contrasted with examples of Voyager radio data

This paper will discuss, inter alia, the findings and conclusions from data management training projects of the first iteration of the programme and how they informed the design of the second, paying particular attention to initiatives to develop and embed training materials

    Particle acceleration by turbulent magnetohydro-dynamic reconnection

    Test particles in a two dimensional, turbulent MHD simulation are found to undergo significant acceleration. The magnetic field configuration is a periodic sheet pinch which undergoes reconnection. The test particles are trapped in the reconnection region for times of order an Alfven transit time in the large electric fields that characterize the turbulent reconnection process at the relatively large magnetic Reynolds number used in the simulation. The maximum speed attained by these particles is consistent with an analytic estimate which depends on the reconnection electric field, the Alfven speed, and the ratio of Larmor period to the Alfven transit time

    Molecular studies on intraspecific diversity and phylogenetic position of Coniothyrium minitans

    Simple sequence repeat (SSR)±PCR amplification using a microsatellite primer (GACA)% and ribosomal RNA gene sequencing were used to examine the intraspecific diversity in the mycoparasite Coniothyrium minitans based on 48 strains, representing eight colony types, from 17 countries world-wide. Coniothyrium cerealis, C. fuckelii and C. sporulosum were used for interspecific comparison. The SSR±PCR technique revealed a relatively low level of polymorphism within C. minitans but did allow some differentiation between strains. While there was no relationship between SSR±PCR profiles and colony type, there was some limited correlation between these profiles and country of origin. Sequences of the ITS 1 and ITS 2 regions and the 5±8S gene of rRNA genes were identical in all twenty-four strains of C. minitans examined irrespective of colony type and origin. These results indicate that C. minitans is genetically not very variable despite phenotypic differences. ITS and 5±8S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that C. minitans had similarities of 94% with C. fuckelii and C. sporulosum (which were identical to each other) and only 64% with C. cerealis. Database searches failed to show any similarity with the ITS 1 sequence for C. minitans although the 5±8S rRNA gene and ITS 2 sequences revealed an 87% similarity with Aporospora terricola. The ITS sequence including the 5±8S rRNA gene sequence of Coniothyrium cerealis showed 91% similarity to Phaeosphaeria microscopica. Phylogenetic analyses using database information suggest that C. minitans, C. sporulosum, C. fuckelii and A. terricola cluster in one clade, grouping with Helminthosporium species and 'Leptosphaeria' bicolor. Coniothyrium cerealis grouped with Ampelomyces quisqualis and formed a major cluster with members of the Phaeosphaeriacae and Phaeosphaeria microscopica

    Shift Equivalence of Measures and the Intrinsic Structure of Shocks in the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process

    We investigate properties of non-translation-invariant measures, describing particle systems on \bbz, which are asymptotic to different translation invariant measures on the left and on the right. Often the structure of the transition region can only be observed from a point of view which is random---in particular, configuration dependent. Two such measures will be called shift equivalent if they differ only by the choice of such a viewpoint. We introduce certain quantities, called translation sums, which, under some auxiliary conditions, characterize the equivalence classes. Our prime example is the asymmetric simple exclusion process, for which the measures in question describe the microscopic structure of shocks. In this case we compute explicitly the translation sums and find that shocks generated in different ways---in particular, via initial conditions in an infinite system or by boundary conditions in a finite system---are described by shift equivalent measures. We show also that when the shock in the infinite system is observed from the location of a second class particle, treating this particle either as a first class particle or as an empty site leads to shift equivalent shock measures.Comment: Plain TeX, 2 figures; [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

    A beaming model of the Io-independent Jovian decameter radiation based on multipole models of the Jovian magnetic field

    A geometrical model is presented in which the apparent source locations of the Io-independent decameter radiation are computed. The calculations assume that the radiation is produced by stably trapped electrons radiating near the electron gyrofrequency and that the emission is then beamed onto a conical surface. The maximum occurrence probability of noise storms is associated with regions in the Jovian magnetosphere where the axis of the emission cone is most inclined toward the Jovian equatorial plane. The calculations utilize and compare two of the octupole spherical harmonic expansions of the Jovian magnetic field constructed from data accumulated by the fluxgate and vector helium magnetometers on board Pioneer 11

    Vortex-type elastic structured media and dynamic shielding

    The paper addresses a novel model of metamaterial structure. A system of spinners has been embedded into a two-dimensional periodic lattice system. The equations of motion of spinners are used to derive the expression for the chiral term in the equations describing the dynamics of the lattice. Dispersion of elastic waves is shown to possess innovative filtering and polarization properties induced by the vortextype nature of the structured media. The related homogenised effective behavior is obtained analytically and it has been implemented to build a shielding cloak around an obstacle.
