    Transversity Properties of Quarks and Hadrons in SIDIS and Drell-Yan

    We consider the leading twist TT-odd contributions as the dominant source of the azimuthal and transverse single spin asymmetries in SIDIS and dilepton production in Drell-Yan Scattering. These asymmetries contain information on the distribution of quark transverse spin in (un)polarized protons. In the spectator framework we estimate these asymmetries at HERMES kinematics and at 50 GeV50\ {\rm GeV} for the proposed experiments at GSI, where an anti-proton beam is ideal for studying the transversity properties of quarks due to the dominance of {\em valence} quark effects.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures.     Front Propagation in the Pearling Instability of Tubular Vesicles

    Recently Bar-Ziv and Moses discovered a dynamical shape transformation induced in cylindrical lipid bilayer vesicles by the action of laser tweezers. We develop a hydrodynamic theory of fluid bilayers in interaction with the surrounding water and argue that the effect of the laser is to induce a sudden tension in the membrane. We refine our previous analysis to account for the fact that the shape transformation is not uniform but propagates outward from the laser trap. Applying the marginal stability criterion to this situation gives us an improved prediction for the selected initial wavelength and a new prediction for the propagation velocity, both in rough agreement with the experimental values. For example, a tubule of initial radius 0.7\micron\ has a predicted initial sinusoidal perturbation in its diameter with wavelength 5.5\micron, as observed. The perturbation propagates as a front with the qualitatively correct front velocity a bit less than 100\micron/sec. In particular we show why this velocity is initially constant, as observed, and so much smaller than the natural scale set by the tension. We also predict that the front velocity should increase linearly with laser power. Finally we introduce an approximate hydrodynamic model applicable to the fully nonlinear regime.     Vortex shedding from a blunt trailing edge with equal and unequal external mean velocities

    A flow visualization study showed that strong Karman vortices are developed behind the blunt trailing edge of a plate when the free stream velocities over both surfaces are equal. These vortices tend to disappear when the surface velocities are unequal. This observation provided an explanation for the occurrence and disappearance of the lip noise often present in coaxial jets. Vortex formation and lip noise occurred at a Strouhal number of about 0.2 based on the lip thickness and the average of the external steady-state velocities. Results from theoretical calculations of the vortex formation, based on an inviscid, incompressible analysis of the motion of point vortices, were in good agreement with the experimental observations

    Magnetic properties of Jupiter's tail at distances from 80-7500 Jovian radii

    A detailed study of the magnetic field data from both Voyagers 1 and 2 has revealed several interesting properties of the near and distant Jovian magnetotail. During the first encounter, as Voyager 1 passed between 80 and 140 R sub J from Jupiter in the near tail, the spacecraft was almost entirely in the northerm lobe magnetic field. The frequency spectrum of magnetic fluctuation in this region cannot be characterized by a power law and does not appear to be turbulent. The distant tail spectra from Voyager 2 are compared with similar spectra obtained from Voyager 1 when it was in near radial alignment with Voyager 2. Although the gross properties of the tail and solar wind fields in most respects differ considerably, the shape and power levels of the spectra of the magnetic fluctuations are very similar, especially between .0001 and .001 Hz. At lower frequencies (.00001 to .0001 Hz) the spectra of magnetic helicity do differ

    Survey of classical density functionals for modelling hydrogen physisorption at 77 K

    This work surveys techniques based on classical density functionals for modeling the quantum dispersion of physisorbed hydrogen at 77 K. Two such techniques are examined in detail. The first is based on the "open ring approximation" (ORA) of Broukhno et al., and it is compared with a technique based on the semiclassical approximation of Feynman and Hibbs (FH). For both techniques, a standard classical density functional is used to model hydrogen molecule-hydrogen molecule (i.e., excess) interactions. The three-dimensional (3D) quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) system and a model of molecular hydrogen adsorption into a graphitic slit pore at 77 K are used as benchmarks. Density functional results are compared with path-integral Monte Carlo simulations and with exact solutions for the 3D QHO system. It is found that neither of the density functional treatments are entirely satisfactory. However, for hydrogen physisorption studies at 77 K the ORA based technique is generally superior to the FH based technique due to a fortunate cancellation of errors in the density functionals used. But, if more accurate excess functionals are used, the FH technique would be superior

    A comparison of A-level performance in economics and business studies: how much more difficult is economics?

    This paper uses ALIS data to compare academic performance in two subjects often viewed as relatively close substitutes for one another at A-level. The important role of GCSE achievement is confirmed for both subjects. There is evidence of strong gender effects and variation in outcomes across Examination Boards. A counterfactual exercise suggests that if the sample of Business Studies candidates had studied Economics nearly 40% of those who obtained a grade C or better in the former subject would not have done so in the latter. The opposite exercise uggests that 12% more Economics candidates would have achieved a grade C or better if they had taken Business Studies. In order to render a Business Studies A-level grade comparable to an Economics one in terms of relative difficulty, we estimate that a downward adjustment of 1.5 UCAS points should be applied to the former subject. This adjustment is lower than that suggested by correction factors based on conventional subject pair analysis for these two subjects
