    The Response of a Hot-Wire Anemometer to a Bubble of Air in Water

    The sensitivity of peak voltage drop and duration of the change In sensor voltages due to the impaction of different size bubbles are confuted and measured. Excellent agreement between these is found for bubbles somewhat larger than the sensor diameter and smaller than Its effective length in water streams in a range of 1.5 to 9 feet per second. The method suggests a reliable method for sizing bubbles in a water stream. The effects due to nondirect hits are not treated

    Energy Spectrum and Turbulent Scales in a Plane Air Jet

    The energy spectra and longitudinal length scales measured in a free plane jet are presented. The actual convective velocity was used in determining the scales. The results show a universal spectral distribution along the axis but no obvious similarity in the large scale motion off the axis. The results are limited to x/D \u3c 60. The measured scales suggest a noticeable increase of the microscale along the lateral coordinate but an essentially constant value along the axis. However the macroscales, increasing linearly along the axis do not show any similarity off the axis

    Critical Behavior of Disordered Systems with a Free Surface

    The behavior of homogeneous and disordered systems with a free boundary is described on the basis of group theory in the two-loop approximation directly in three-dimensional space. The effect of the free boundary on the regime of the bulk critical behavior is revealed. It is shown that the boundedness of the system slightly affects the regime of the bulk critical behavior in the case of the ordinary transition, whereas this effect is more noticeable in the case of the special transition. Surface critical phenomena are described for homogeneous and disordered systems, and the critical exponents are calculated in the two-loop approximation. It is shown that the effect of impurities is insignificant in the special phase transition, whereas it is more noticeable in the ordinary phase transition. The derived critical exponents are compared with the computer-simulation results.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figure

    The Asiago-ESO/RASS QSO Survey. I.The Catalog and the Local QSO Luminosity Function

    This paper presents the first results of a survey for bright quasars (V < 14.5 and R30. The photometric database is derived from the GSC and USNO catalogs. Quasars are identified on the basis of their X-ray emission measured in the ROSAT All Sky Survey. The surface density of quasars brighter than 15.5 mag turns out to be 9±1103deg29 \pm 1 \cdot 10^{-3} deg^{-2}, about 3 times higher than that estimated by the PG survey. The quasar optical Luminosity Function (LF) at 0.04<z0.30.04 < z \le 0.3 is computed and shown to be consistent with a Luminosity Dependent Luminosity Evolution of the type derived by La Franca and Cristiani (1997) in the range 0.3<z2.20.3 < z \le 2.2. The predictions of semi-analytical models of hierarchical structure formation agree remarkably well with the present observations.Comment: 54 pages Latex, with 7 PostScript figures.     The Formation Rate, Mass and Luminosity Functions of DA White Dwarfs from the Palomar Green Survey

    Spectrophotometric observations at high signal-to-noise ratio were obtained of a complete sample of 347 DA white dwarfs from the Palomar Green (PG) Survey. Fits of observed Balmer lines to synthetic spectra calculated from pure-hydrogen model atmospheres were used to obtain robust values of Teff, log g, masses, radii, and cooling ages. The luminosity function of the sample, weighted by 1/Vmax, was obtained and compared with other determinations. The mass distribution of the white dwarfs is derived, after important corrections for the radii of the white dwarfs in this magnitude-limited survey and for the cooling time scales. The formation rate of DA white dwarfs from the PG is estimated to be 0.6x10^(-12) pc^(-3) yr^(-1). Comparison with predictions from a theoretical study of the white dwarf formation rate for single stars indicates that >80% of the high mass component requires a different origin, presumably mergers of lower mass double degenerate stars. In order to estimate the recent formation rate of all white dwarfs in the local Galactic disk, corrections for incompleteness of the PG, addition of the DB-DO white dwarfs, and allowance for stars hidden by luminous binary companions had to be applied to enhance the rate. An overall formation rate of white dwarfs recently in the local Galactic disk of 1.15+/-0.25x10^(-12) pc^(-3) yr^(-1) is obtained. Two recent studies of samples of nearby Galactic planetary nebulae lead to estimates around twice as high.     Directed paths on hierarchical lattices with random sign weights

    We study sums of directed paths on a hierarchical lattice where each bond has either a positive or negative sign with a probability pp. Such path sums JJ have been used to model interference effects by hopping electrons in the strongly localized regime. The advantage of hierarchical lattices is that they include path crossings, ignored by mean field approaches, while still permitting analytical treatment. Here, we perform a scaling analysis of the controversial ``sign transition'' using Monte Carlo sampling, and conclude that the transition exists and is second order. Furthermore, we make use of exact moment recursion relations to find that the moments always determine, uniquely, the probability distribution $P(J)$. We also derive, exactly, the moment behavior as a function of $p$ in the thermodynamic limit. Extrapolations ($n\to 0$) to obtain for odd and even moments yield a new signal for the transition that coincides with Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of high moments yield interesting ``solitonic'' structures that propagate as a function of pp. Finally, we derive the exact probability distribution for path sums JJ up to length L=64 for all sign probabilities.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figure

    Random bond Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field: A finite-size scaling analysis

    We investigate the zero-temperature quantum phase transition of the random bond Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field. Its critical properties are identical to those of the McCoy-Wu model, which is a classical Ising model in two dimensions with layered disorder. The latter is studied via Monte Carlo simulations and transfer matrix calculations and the critical exponents are determined with a finite-size scaling analysis. The magnetization and susceptibility obey conventional rather than activated scaling. We observe that the order parameter-- and correlation function--probability distribution show a nontrivial scaling near the critical point which implies a hierarchy of critical exponents associated with the critical behavior of the generalized correlation lengths.Comment: RevTeX 13 pages + 4 figures (appended as uuencoded compressed tar-file), THP61-9
