Stationary generalized Kerr-Schild spacetimes
In this paper we have applied the generalized Kerr-Schild transformation
finding a new family of stationary perfect-fluid solutions of the Einstein
field equations. The procedure used combines some well-known techniques of null
and timelike vector fields, from which some properties of the solutions are
studied in a coordinate-free way. These spacetimes are algebraically special
being their Petrov types II and D. This family includes all the classical
vacuum Kerr-Schild spacetimes, excepting the plane-fronted gravitational waves,
and some other interesting solutions as, for instance, the Kerr metric in the
background of the Einstein Universe. However, the family is much more general

The Science of Spin: Targeted Strategies to Manufacture Doubt With Detrimental Effects on Environmental and Public Health
Background Numerous groups, such as the tobacco industry, have deliberately altered and misrepresented knowable facts and empirical evidence to promote an agenda, often for monetary benefit, with consequences for environmental and public health. Previous research has explored cases individually, but none have conducted an in-depth comparison between cases. The purpose of this study was to compile a comprehensive list of tactics used by disparate groups and provide a framework for identifying further instances of manufactured doubt. Methods We examined scholarly books, peer-reviewed articles, well-researched journalism pieces, and legal evidence related to five disparate industries and organizations selected for their destructive impacts on environmental and public health (tobacco, coal, and sugar industries, manufacturers of the pesticide Atrazine, and the Marshall Institute, an institute focused on climate change research, and other scientists from the era that associated with those in the Institute). These documents provided evidence for a list of tactics used to generate pro-industry spin and manufacture doubt about conferred harm. We then identified trends among sets of strategies that could explain their differential use or efficacy. Results We recognized 28 unique tactics used to manufacture doubt. Five of these tactics were used by all five organizations, suggesting that they are key features of manufactured doubt. The intended audience influences the strategy used to misinform, and logical fallacies contribute to their efficacy. Conclusions This list of tactics can be used by others to build a case that an industry or group is deliberately manipulating information associated with their actions or products. Improved scientific and rhetorical literacy could be used to render them less effective, depending on the audience targeted, and ultimately allow for the protection of both environmental health and public health more generally
On the Existence of Radiation Gauges in Petrov type II spacetimes
The radiation gauges used by Chrzanowski (his IRG/ORG) for metric
reconstruction in the Kerr spacetime seem to be over-specified. Their
specification consists of five conditions: four, which we treat here as valid
gauge conditions, plus an additional condition on the trace of the metric
perturbation. In this work, we utilize a newly developed form of the perturbed
Einstein equations to establish a condition -- on a particular tetrad component
of the stress-energy tensor -- under which the full IRG/ORG can be imposed.
Using gauge freedom, we are able to impose the full IRG for Petrov type II and
type D backgrounds, using a different tetrad for each case. As a specific
example, we work through the process of imposing the IRG in a Schwarzschild
background, using a more traditional approach. Implications for metric
reconstruction using the Teukolsky curvature perturbations in type D spacetimes

General relativity on a null surface: Hamiltonian formulation in the teleparallel geometry
The Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity on a null surface is
established in the teleparallel geometry. No particular gauge conditons on the
tetrads are imposed, such as the time gauge condition. By means of a 3+1
decomposition the resulting Hamiltonian arises as a completely constrained
system. However, it is structurally different from the the standard
Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) type formulation. In this geometrical framework the
basic field quantities are tetrads that transform under the global SO(3,1) and

Discovering predictive variables when evolving cognitive models
A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm is used to evolve models of learning from different theories for multiple tasks. Correlation analysis is performed to identify parameters which affect performance on specific tasks; these are the predictive variables. Mutation is biased so that changes to parameter values tend to preserve values within the population's current range. Experimental results show that optimal models are evolved, and also that uncovering predictive variables is beneficial in improving the rate of convergence
Genomic variation and population structure detected by single nucleotide polymorphism arrays in Corriedale, Merino and Creole sheep.
THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE GENETIC DIVERSITY WITHIN AND AMONG THREE BREEDS OF SHEEP: Corriedale, Merino and Creole. Sheep from the three breeds (Merino n = 110, Corriedale n = 108 and Creole n = 10) were genotyped using the Illumina Ovine SNP50 beadchip(®). Genetic diversity was evaluated by comparing the minor allele frequency (MAF) among breeds. Population structure and genetic differentiation were assessed using STRUCTURE software, principal component analysis (PCA) and fixation index (FST). Fixed markers (MAF = 0) that were different among breeds were identified as specific breed markers. Using a subset of 18,181 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), PCA and STUCTURE analysis were able to explain population stratification within breeds. Merino and Corriedale divergent lines showed high levels of polymorphism (89.4% and 86% of polymorphic SNPs, respectively) and moderate genetic differentiation (FST = 0.08) between them. In contrast, Creole had only 69% polymorphic SNPs and showed greater genetic differentiation from the other two breeds (FST = 0.17 for both breeds). Hence, a subset of molecular markers present in the OvineSNP50 is informative enough for breed assignment and population structure analysis of commercial and Creole breeds
The Reproductive Biology of Two Common Surfzone Associated Sciaenids, Yellowfin Croaker (Umbrina roncador) and Spotfin Croaker (Roncador stearnsii), from Southern California
Yellowfin croaker (Umbrina roncador) and spotfin croaker (Roncador stearnsii) were collected from San Clemente, California from May through September 2006. Both species were analyzed to determine batch fecundity. Yellowfin croaker ovaries were also histologically examined to describe their summer spawning activity. Batch fecundity in spotfin croaker (n 5 13) females ranged from 35,169 to 640,703 described by the equations BF 5 1.59E-07SL5.01 for length and BF 5 13.51W1.60 for total body weight. Yellowfin croaker (n 5 16) females batch fecundity ranged from 99,259 to 405,967 and was described by the equations BF 5 2.4E- 04SL2.02 for length or BF 5 0.33W0.68 for total body weight. Yellowfin croaker spawning was determined to begin by June and end by September
Interaction Energy of `t Hooft-Polyakov Monopoles
The dependence of the energies of axially symmetric monopoles of magnetic
charges 2 and 3, on the Higgs self-interaction coupling constant, is studied
numerically. Comparing the energy per unit topological charge of the charge-2
monopole with the energy of the spherically symmetric charge-1 monopole, we

Dynamical quenching and annealing in self-organization multiagent models
We study the dynamics of a generalized Minority Game (GMG) and of the Bar
Attendance Model (BAM) in which a number of agents self-organize to match an
attendance that is fixed externally as a control parameter. We compare the
usual dynamics used for the Minority Game with one for the BAM that makes a
better use of the available information. We study the asymptotic states reached
in both frameworks. We show that states that can be assimilated to either
thermodynamic equilibrium or quenched configurations can appear in both models,
but with different settings. We discuss the relevance of the parameter that
measures the value of the prize for winning in units of the fine for losing. We
also provide an annealing protocol by which the quenched configurations of the
GMG can progressively be modified to reach an asymptotic equlibrium state that
