Der Körper als praktische Wirklichkeit: Zur Soziologie des Körpers und ihrer theologischen Anschlussfähigkeit

In der christlichen Tradition erscheint der menschliche Körper als einetheologische Wirklichkeit. Er ist von Gott mit bestimmten Wesens-Eigenschaften geschaffen worden, die wir Menschen respektieren sollen. Anthropologisch und soziologisch hingegen gilt der Körper - und damit auch die menschliche Sexualität und das Geschlechterverhältnis - als praktische Wirklichkeit. Der Mensch muss etwas aus sich machen, er muss ein Verhältnis finden zu sich selbst. Die Identität wird zu einem reflexiven Projekt, das die eigene Körperlichkeit einschließt. Der Körper erweist sich dabei zugleich als Produzent und Produkt von Gesellschaft. Seine Autonomie kann das Individuum also immer nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen realisieren. Erst wenn die Idee reflexiver Selbstgestaltung theologisch eingeholt wird, kann die Opposition zwischen moderner Selbst- und religiöser Fremdbestimmung überwunden werden.In the Christian tradition, the human body appears to be a theological reality. It was made by God, with certain essential qualities which are to be respected by us humans. However, on an anthropological as well as on a sociological level, the human body - and with it human sexuality and gender relations - is said to be a practical reality. The human being has to make something of her/himself; s/he has to find a relation to her/himself. Identity becomes a reflexive project that includes one’s own corporeality. The body is then both producer and product of society. Thus, the individual can realise her/his autonomy only in certain circumstances. The opposition between modern self-determination and religious heteronomy can only be overcome when theology catches up with the idea of reflexive self-design

John Paul II’s Theology of the Body proves to be a theology of the heterosexual body. A new evaluation of transsexuality can only be implemented if the postulated congruence is revised
