Testing and validating the CERES-wheat (Crop Estimation through Resource and Environment Synthesis-wheat) model in diverse environments
CERES-Wheat is a computer simulation model of the growth, development, and yield of spring and winter wheat. It was designed to be used in any location throughout the world where wheat can be grown. The model is written in Fortran 77, operates on a daily time stop, and runs on a range of computer systems from microcomputers to mainframes. Two versions of the model were developed: one, CERES-Wheat, assumes nitrogen to be nonlimiting; in the other, CERES-Wheat-N, the effects of nitrogen deficiency are simulated. The report provides the comparisons of simulations and measurements of about 350 wheat data sets collected from throughout the world
Randomized Efficacy Trial of a Micronutrient-Fortified Beverage in Primary School Children in Tanzania.
Dietary supplements providing physiologic amounts of several micronutrients simultaneously have not been thoroughly tested for combating micronutrient deficiencies. We determined whether a beverage fortified with 10 micronutrients at physiologic doses influenced the iron and vitamin A status and growth of rural children (aged 6-11 y) attending primary schools. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy trial, children were assigned to receive the fortified beverage or an unfortified beverage at school for 6 mo. There were nonsignificant differences at baseline between children in the fortified and nonfortified groups in iron status, serum retinol, and anthropometry. At the 6-mo follow-up, among children with anemia (hemoglobin < 110 g/L), there was a significantly larger increase in hemoglobin concentration in the fortified group than in the nonfortified group (9.2 and 0.2 g/L, respectively). Of those who were anemic at baseline, 69.4% in the nonfortified group and 55.1% in the fortified group remained anemic at follow-up (RR: 0.79), a cure rate of 21%. The prevalence of children with low serum retinol concentrations (< 200 microg/L) dropped significantly from 21.4% to 11.3% in the fortified group compared with a nonsignificant change (20.6% to 19.7%) in the nonfortified group. At follow-up, mean incremental changes in weight (1.79 compared with 1.24 kg), height (3.2 compared with 2.6 cm), and BMI (0.88 compared with 0.53) were significantly higher in the fortified group than in the nonfortified group. The fortified beverage significantly improved hematologic and anthropometric measurements and significantly lowered the overall prevalence of anemia and vitamin A deficiency

Substructure in the Coma Cluster: Giants vs Dwarfs
The processes that form and shape galaxy clusters, such as infall, mergers
and dynamical relaxation, tend to generate distinguishable differences between
the distributions of a cluster's giant and dwarf galaxies. Thus the dynamics of
dwarf galaxies in a cluster can provide valuable insights into its dynamical
history. With this in mind, we look for differences between the spatial and
velocity distributions of giant (b18) galaxies in the Coma
cluster. Our redshift sample contains new measurements from the 2dF and WYFFOS
spectrographs, making it more complete at faint magnitudes than any previously
studied sample of Coma galaxies. It includes 745 cluster members - 452 giants
and 293 dwarfs. We find that the line-of-sight velocity distribution of the
giants is significantly non-Gaussian, but not that for the dwarfs. A battery of
statistical tests of both the spatial and localised velocity distributions of
the galaxies in our sample finds no strong evidence for differences between the
giant and dwarf populations. These results rule out the cluster as a whole
having moved significantly towards equipartition, and they are consistent with

A survey to explore the current use of injection therapy as part of a conservative treatment plan for degenerative meniscal lesions within UK based, injection trained physiotherapy members of the society of musculoskeletal medicine
Objectives: To explore the current use of injection therapy as part of a conservative treatment plan for degenerative meniscal lesions (DML) within UK based physiotherapy members of the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine (SOMM) with injection training.
Methods: An online survey was distributed via email to all UK based, SOMM physiotherapists who had trained and received their injection diploma through the SOMM (n = 203) with a response rate of 32% (n = 64). The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, contingency tables and the Fisher's exact test. A P value ≤0.05 was considered significant. Ethical clearance was gained through the SOMM and Middlesex University.
Results: Of the respondents 98% (n = 62) of current UK based, injection trained SOMM physiotherapists utilize conservative treatment for DML of which 81% (n = 52) include injection therapy. Seventy-seven per cent (n = 49) who currently use injection therapy for DML administer a combination of 40 mg Depomedrone combined with local anaesthetic via a patellofemoral approach. Those not using injection therapy as part of their management of DML attributed this to local department restrictions and lack of evidence.
Discussion: This research has helped further understand the use of injection therapy for DML and where it fits within a conservative treatment plan. The benefit from injection therapy reported by respondents is similar to previous research but could be influenced by injection exposure and potentially steroid choice. Overall a consensus is starting to appear regarding dosage, steroid, and administration; however, differences arise when comparing individual department guidelines to CSP and NICE guidelines
Does the student-led osteopathy clinical learning environment prepare students for practice?
BACKGROUND: For many allied health disciplines, pre-professional clinical education takes place in student-led, on-campus clinic environments. In these environments, pre-professional students undertake patient care under the supervision of qualified health professionals. Literature exploring the benefits of the student-led clinical learning environment is limited and little is known about the role student-led clinics play in preparing pre-professional osteopathy students for professional practice. AIM: To explore the perceptions of osteopathy clinical educators about the role of the student-led clinic at Victoria University (VU) in preparing pre-professional students for professional practice. METHODS: A qualitative collective case study methodology was utilised to explore clinical educator perceptions. Individual interviews were conducted with clinical educators employed in the university osteopathy clinic. Interview questions were framed around the Capabilities for Osteopathic Practice which set the Australian osteopathy practice standards. Data were assessed by two of the authors using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Nine clinical educators out of 31 employed at the university clinic (29%) agreed to participate. Qualitative analysis generated three themes: perceptions of the student-led clinic (SLC) as a learning environment; clinical educator perception of their role in the SLC; and, challenges to and of the SLC environment. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical educators perceived that the student-led osteopathy clinical learning environment develops pre-professional learners to meet some, but not all, of the capabilities for professional practice as an osteopath in Australia. The environment may be improved through faculty development, fostering a proactive learning approach, addressing system-based issues, and providing opportunities to interact with other health professions

The Color-Magnitude Relation in CL 1358+62 at z=0.33: Evidence for Significant Evolution in the S0 Population
We use a large mosaic of HST WFPC2 images to measure the colors and
morphologies of 194 spectroscopically confirmed members of the rich galaxy
cluster CL1358+62 at z=0.33. We study the color-magnitude (CM) relation as a
function of radius in the cluster. The intrinsic scatter in the restframe B-V
CM relation of the elliptical galaxies is very small: ~0.022 magnitudes. The CM
relation of the ellipticals does not depend significantly on the distance from
the cluster center. In contrast, the CM relation for the S0 galaxies does
depend on radius: the S0s in the core follow a CM relation similar to the
ellipticals, but at large radii (R>0.7Mpc) the S0s are systematically bluer and
the scatter in the CM relation approximately doubles to ~0.043 magnitudes. The
blueing of the S0s is significant at the 95% confidence level. These results
imply that the S0 galaxies in the outer parts of the cluster have formed stars
more recently than the S0s in the inner parts. A likely explanation is that
clusters at z=0.33 continue to accrete galaxies and groups from the field and
that infall extinguishes star formation. The apparent homogeneity of the
elliptical galaxy population implies that star formation in recently accreted
ellipticals was terminated well before accretion occurred. We have constructed
models to explore the constraints that these observations place on the star
formation history of cluster galaxies. We conclude that the population of S0s
in clusters is likely to evolve as star forming galaxies are converted into
passively evolving galaxies. Assuming a constant accretion rate after z=0.33,
we estimate ~15% of the present day early-type galaxy population in rich
clusters was accreted between z=0.33 and z=0. The ellipticals (and the
brightest S0s) are probably a more stable population, at least since z=0.6.Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ. 20 pages, 12 figures. Full

LIGO detector characterization in the second and third observing runs
The characterization of the Advanced LIGO detectors in the second and third observing runs has increased the sensitivity of the instruments, allowing for a higher number of detectable gravitational-wave signals, and provided confirmation of all observed gravitational-wave events. In this work, we present the methods used to characterize the LIGO detectors and curate the publicly available datasets, including the LIGO strain data and data quality products. We describe the essential role of these datasets in LIGO–Virgo Collaboration analyses of gravitational-waves from both transient and persistent sources and include details on the provenance of these datasets in order to support analyses of LIGO data by the broader community. Finally, we explain anticipated changes in the role of detector characterization and current efforts to prepare for the high rate of gravitational-wave alerts and events in future observing runs
The racist bodily imaginary: the image of the body-in-pieces in (post)apartheid culture
This paper outlines a reoccurring motif within the racist imaginary of (post)apartheid culture: the black body-in-pieces. This disturbing visual idiom is approached from three conceptual perspectives. By linking ideas prevalent in Frantz Fanon’s description of colonial racism with psychoanalytic concepts such as Lacan’s notion of the corps morcelé, the paper offers, firstly, an account of the black body-in-pieces as fantasmatic preoccupation of the (post)apartheid imaginary. The role of such images is approached, secondly, through the lens of affect theory which eschews a representational ‘reading’ of such images in favour of attention to their asignifying intensities and the role they play in effectively constituting such bodies. Lastly, Judith Butler’s discussion of war photography and the conditions of grievability introduces an ethical dimension to the discussion and helps draw attention to the unsavory relations of enjoyment occasioned by such images
