What are the strategies, modalities and aspirations of island-based, stateless nationalist and regionalist parties in the twenty-first century? Political independence is now easier to achieve, even by the smallest of territories; yet, it is not so likely to be pursued with any vigour by the world's various persisting sub-national (and mainly island) jurisdictions. Theirs is a pursuit of different expressions of sub-national autonomy, stopping short of independence. And yet, a number of independence referenda are scheduled, including one looming in Scotland in autumn 2014
Gluon fragmentation to quarkonia
Gluon fragmentation to heavy quarkonia is studied herein. We
compute these D-wave states' polarized fragmentation functions and find that
they are enhanced by large numerical prefactors. The prospects for detecting

A Multi-Wavelength Study of the Jet, Lobes and Core of the Quasar PKS 2101-490
We present a detailed study of the X-ray, optical and radio emission from the
jet, lobes and core of the quasar PKS 2101-490 as revealed by new Chandra, HST
and ATCA images. We extract the radio to X-ray spectral energy distributions
from seven regions of the 13 arcsecond jet, and model the jet X-ray emission in
terms of Doppler beamed inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave
background (IC/CMB) for a jet in a state of equipartition between particle and
magnetic field energy densities. This model implies that the jet remains highly
relativistic hundreds of kpc from the nucleus, with a bulk Lorentz factor Gamma
~ 6 and magnetic field of order 30 microGauss. We detect an apparent radiative
cooling break in the synchrotron spectrum of one of the jet knots, and are able
to interpret this in terms of a standard one-zone continuous injection model,
based on jet parameters derived from the IC/CMB model. However, we note
apparent substructure in the bright optical knot in one of the HST bands. We
confront the IC/CMB model with independent estimates of the jet power, and find
that the IC/CMB model jet power is consistent with the independent estimates,
provided that the minimum electron Lorentz factor gamma_min > 50, and the knots
are significantly longer than the jet width, as implied by de-projection of the
observed knot lengths.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 6 table
Unfolding dynamics of proteins under applied force
Understanding the mechanisms of protein folding is a major challenge that is being addressed effectively by collaboration between researchers in the physical and life sciences. Recently, it has become possible to mechanically unfold proteins by pulling on their two termini using local force probes such as the atomic force microscope. Here, we present data from experiments in which synthetic protein polymers designed to mimic naturally occurring polyproteins have been mechanically unfolded. For many years protein folding dynamics have been studied using chemical denaturation, and we therefore firstly discuss our mechanical unfolding data in the context of such experiments and show that the two unfolding mechanisms are not the same, at least for the proteins studied here. We also report unexpected observations that indicate a history effect in the observed unfolding forces of polymeric proteins and explain this in terms of the changing number of domains remaining to unfold and the increasing compliance of the lengthening unstructured polypeptide chain produced each time a domain unfolds
Dealing with the Tail: Remedial Tutorials for Second-year Electrical-engineering Students
An intervention aimed at improving the success rate of at-risk students in three key secondyear electrical-engineering courses covering, respectively, the topics of circuit theory, electronics and electromagnetics is reported. At-risk students are identified by a combination of diagnostic testing and early coursework results. These students are then invited to join a special, weekly, âFoundation Tutorialâ in which both technical and learning obstacles are addressed. Two years of data are presented which suggest that such an intervention does produce a significant improvement in the success rate of participating students
