Synthesis and characterization of attosecond light vortices in the extreme ultraviolet
Infrared and visible light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are
currently thoroughly studied for their extremely broad applicative prospects,
among which are quantum information, micromachining and diagnostic tools. Here
we extend these prospects, presenting a comprehensive study for the synthesis
and full characterization of optical vortices carrying OAM in the extreme
ultraviolet (XUV) domain. We confirm the upconversion rules of a femtosecond
infrared helically phased beam into its high-order harmonics, showing that each
harmonic order carries the total number of OAM units absorbed in the process up
to very high orders (57). This allows us to synthesize and characterize
helically shaped XUV trains of attosecond pulses. To demonstrate a typical use
of these new XUV light beams, we show our ability to generate and control,
through photoionization, attosecond electron beams carrying OAM. These
breakthroughs pave the route for the study of a series of fundamental phenomena
and the development of new ultrafast diagnosis tools using either photonic or
electronic vortices
Temporal evolution of sand corridors in a <i>Posidonia oceanica</i> seascape: a 15-year study
The spatial dynamic of Posidonia oceanica meadows is a process extending over centuries. This paper shows evidence of the natural dynamics of P. oceanica “shifting intermattes” or “sand corridors” (hereafter SCs): unvegetated patches within a dense meadow. We studied features and temporal evolution (2001-2015) of 5 SCs in the Calvi Bay (Corsica) at 15 m depth and followed the characteristics the P. oceanica meadow lining the edge of patches. All SCs show a similar topography. The eroded side is a vertical edge where roots, rhizomes and sediments are visible, when on the opposite colonized side, the sand is at the same level as the continuous meadow. The vertical edge reaches a maximum height of 160 cm and is eroded by orbital bottom currents with a maximum speed of 12 cm.s-1, the erosion speed ranging from 0.6 to 15 cm.y-1. SCs progress toward the coastline with a mean speed of 10 cm.y-1, the rate of colonization by P. oceanica shoots ranging from 1.5 to 21 cm.y-1. We calculated that the studied SCs would reach the coastline within 500 to 600 years. Fruit and vegetable consumption among urban Canadian schoolchildren living in a socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhood
Purpose: Fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption was examined among children aged seven to 10 years in a London, Ontario, neighbourhood. The goal was to determine areas requiring targeted programs to promote healthy lifestyles.
Methods: Data were gathered from 136 students in grades 2 to 4. Each student attended one of four elementary schools within a neighbourhood designated a priority by the City of London Child and Youth Network. The Day in the Life Questionnaire was used to collect the data. Instances of FV consumption were compared with Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) guidelines.
Results: Ninety-eight percent of participants did not follow the CFG-recommended minimum guidelines; they had fewer than five instances of FV consumption daily. Eighty-seven percent had fewer than two instances of FV consumption daily.
Conclusions: These data support national findings of low FV consumption among children

Mediating punitiveness: understanding public attitudes towards work-related fatality cases
This paper concerns an empirical investigation into public attitudes towards work-related fatality cases, where organizational offenders cause the death of workers or members of the public. This issue is particularly relevant following the introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 into UK law. Here, as elsewhere, the use of criminal law against companies reflects governmental concerns over public confidence in the law’s ability to regulate risk. The empirical findings demonstrate that high levels of public concern over these cases do not translate into punitive attitudes. Such cases are viewed rationally and constructively, and lead to instrumental rather than purely expressive enforcement preferences
Korn's second inequality and geometric rigidity with mixed growth conditions
Geometric rigidity states that a gradient field which is -close to the
set of proper rotations is necessarily -close to a fixed rotation, and is
one key estimate in nonlinear elasticity. In several applications, as for
example in the theory of plasticity, energy densities with mixed growth appear.
We show here that geometric rigidity holds also in and in
interpolation spaces. As a first step we prove the corresponding linear
inequality, which generalizes Korn's inequality to these spaces
Long-term feeding ecology and habitat use in harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena from Scandinavian waters inferred from trace elements and stable isotopes
BACKGROUND: We investigated the feeding ecology and habitat use of 32 harbour porpoises by-caught in 4 localities along the Scandinavian coast from the North Sea to the Barents Sea using time-integrative markers: stable isotopes (δ(13)C, δ(15)N) and trace elements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Se, total Hg and Cd), in relation to habitat characteristics (bathymetry) and geographic position (latitude). RESULTS: Among the trace elements analysed, only Cd, with an oceanic specific food origin, was found to be useful as an ecological tracer. All other trace elements studied were not useful, most likely because of physiological regulation and/or few specific sources in the food web. The δ(13)C, δ(15)N signatures and Cd levels were highly correlated with each other, as well as with local bathymetry and geographic position (latitude). Variation in the isotopic ratios indicated a shift in harbour porpoise's feeding habits from pelagic prey species in deep northern waters to more coastal and/or demersal prey in the relatively shallow North Sea and Skagerrak waters. This result is consistent with stomach content analyses found in the literature. This shift was associated with a northward Cd-enrichment which provides further support to the Cd 'anomaly' previously reported in polar waters and suggests that porpoises in deep northern waters include Cd-contaminated prey in their diet, such as oceanic cephalopods. CONCLUSION: As stable isotopes and Cd provide information in the medium and the long term respectively, the spatial variation found, shows that harbour porpoises experience different ecological regimes during the year along the Scandinavian coasts, adapting their feeding habits to local oceanographic conditions, without performing extensive migration
14-3-3τ as a Modulator of Early α-Synuclein Multimerization and Amyloid Formation
The aggregation of α-synuclein (αS) plays a key role in Parkinson’s disease (PD) etiology. While the onset of PD is age-related, the cellular quality control system appears to regulate αS aggregation throughout most human life. Intriguingly, the protein 14-3-3τ has been demonstrated to delay αS aggregation and the onset of PD in various models. However, the molecular mechanisms behind this delay remain elusive. Our study confirms the delay in αS aggregation by 14-3-3τ, unveiling a concentration-dependent relation. Utilizing microscale thermophoresis (MST) and single-molecule burst analysis, we quantified the early αS multimers and concluded that these multimers exhibit properties that classify them as nanoscale condensates that form in a cooperative process, preceding the critical nucleus for fibril formation. Significantly, the αS multimer formation mechanism changes dramatically in the presence of scaffold protein 14-3-3τ. Our data modeling suggests that 14-3-3τ modulates the multimerization process, leading to the creation of mixed multimers or co-condensates, comprising both αS and 14-3-3τ. These mixed multimers form in a noncooperative process. They are smaller, more numerous, and distinctively not on the pathway to amyloid formation. Importantly, 14-3-3τ thus acts in the very early stage of αS multimerization, ensuring that αS does not aggregate but remains soluble and functional. This offers long-sought novel entries for the pharmacological modulation of PD.</p
