An Examination of the Importance of Academic Support Programs for Two-Year College Student-Athletes

    Get PDF
Literature has shown that there are many positive practices in supporting community college student-athletes, but the sheer number of positive practices out there can be overwhelming and having a summary of practices could be helpful for academic advisors to properly serve this unique population. This is necessary as research has revealed that the number of academic advisors who feel equipped to support community college student-athletes is low. Community college student-athletes are a unique population, with a diverse variety of needs. This project examines intrusive academic advising, enrollment and eligibility requirements for community college student-athletes, tutorial services and peer academic mentoring. The focus of this project is to provide a learning opportunity for two year college academic advisors with the knowledge and tools they need to support their student-athletes, while promoting and fostering academic success

Building a Community-based Food System: Green Economic Development in Central Illinois

    Get PDF
It has been a challenge for many community-based, small to medium scale, fruit and vegetable farmers to meet the high demand of locally sourced food. Community-based producers have been mostly using farm stands, farmers’ markets and community-supported agriculture (CSAs) to meet this demand. Although there has been tremendous growth in the number of farmers’ markets and CSA subscriptions, a gap remains for institutional buyers demanding community-based food. Regional food hubs may be the critical piece needed for filling this gap. The Edible Economy Project in partnership with Heartland Community College is working on a regional food hub network project in central Illinois to create a more efficient and vibrant community-based food system. A regional food hub is defined by the USDA as “a business or organization that actively manages the aggregation, distribution, and marketing of source-identified food products primarily from local and regional producers to strengthen their ability to satisfy wholesale, retail, and institutional demand”. Through food hubs, buyers and farmers are better able to connect and efficiently make transactions. Food hubs allow community-based food to be more accessible and the hope is that farmers will be able to meet the high demand for community-based food. This research places the community-based food system into the broader green economy and takes a case study approach for explaining how a community with diverse stakeholders may develop a food hub

Squamous cell carcinoma as a primary pleural tumor – case report

The differential diagnosis of primary pleural tumors is a very difficult challenge. The clinical symptoms are insufficient to make a clear and definitive diagnosis. This report presents the case of a 63-year-old male patient who was admitted to Department of Pulmonology due to evidence of increasing respiratory failure due to COVID-19 infection. The X-ray showed massive infiltrate on the left pleural cavity. A bronchofiberoscopy was performed with material removal for histopathological examination. No tumor cells were found in the first pathomorphology report. A videothoracoscopy was performed, in which excerpts from the wall and pleura of the lungs were taken. Pathomorphologic findings excluded mesotheliomas and adenocarcinomas, and after additional reactions a low-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with adenomatoid differentiation features. The final diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma. This case highlights that the diagnosis of tumors of the pleura requires cooperation between pathomorphologists and clinicians. Further studies are needed to associate COVID-19 infection with the occurrence of rare pleural tumours
