Operations and maintenance for multipurpose offshore platforms using statistical weather window analysis

With increasing offshore-related commerce, the choice of appropriate operations and maintenance activities must take into consideration safety, costs and performance targets. Stochastic weather conditions at each site of interest presents uncertain situations. We present an optimized decision making procedure that seeks to maximize monetary benefits while minimizing safety risks. Our proposed approach outlines and illustrates application of such a policy by incorporating traditional weather window analysis using a Markov Decision Process approach. In particular, the approach is applied in case study involving the operation of a multipurpose platform at an offshore Scotland site

Poikiloderma With Neutropenia and Mastocytosis: A Case Report and a Review of Dermatological Signs

Poikiloderma with neutropenia (PN) is a very rare genetic disorder mainly characterized by poikiloderma and congenital neutropenia, which explains the recurrence of respiratory infections and risk of developing bronchiectasis. Patients are also prone to develop hematological and skin cancers. Here, we present the case of a patient, the only child of apparently unrelated Serbian parents, affected by PN resulting from the homozygous mutation NM_024598.3:c.243G>A (p.Trp81Ter) of USB1; early onset of poikiloderma (1 year of age) was associated with cutaneous mastocytosis. We also provide a review of the literature on this uncommon condition with a focus on dermatological findings

Scaling strategies for multi-purpose floating structures physical modeling : state of art and new perspectives

Multi-purpose floating platforms are emerging as a promising concept in ocean engineering applications, thanks to their capability of ensuring system integration, cost reduction and modularization. However, their increasing complexity requires the development of numerical tools, which need to be validated experimentally through adequate physical models. New challenges hence arise, since the subsystems integrated in the structure generally follow different scaling laws and may need relatively large physical models to achieve a reliable similitude between the full-scale structure and its physical model counterpart. The latter issue can be critical, because indoor tests in wave tanks and basins constrain the scale factors to the size of the available facilities. Open-sea experiments, albeit challenging because of the uncontrolled environmental conditions, could be a valid complement to the traditional indoor tests. This article proposes a review of the multi-physics scaling strategies for the subsystems usually embedded in multi-purpose floating platforms, i.e. floating support, mooring system, wind turbine, wave energy converter and aquaculture facilities, by providing a critical analysis on the relevance of the scaling factor and of the scaling strategy. The paper may also serve as a guide for practical applications involving one or several of the considered subsystems
