The basilical complex of S. Endometriosis, usually called as "cancer of the career-woman", is being recognized as a “social disease” for its prevalence and its debilitating impact on young women, leading to a high socio-economic burden of the disease. This study was performed from January 2011 to January 2013 at the Department of Gynecological, Obstetrics and Urological Sciences (Sapienza University of Rome, Sant’ Andrea Hospital) in order to assess the impact of endometriosis-related symptoms on work productivity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Anonymous questionnaires were administered individually to a total of 254 women with surgically diagnosed endometriosis. The questionnaires consisted of three sections: Patient Health Survey (SF-12), the Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-5), and the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Survey (WPAI). Our results confirm that endometriosis has a significant impact on work productivity and HRQoL of affected women, leading to high economic burden and huge costs to society. Therefore it is time to make serious investments in researchers, in order to achieve a precocious diagnosis of the disease and to improve the treatment of this debilitating condition

Performance of rapid tests in the management of dengue fever imported cases in Lazio, Italy 2014-2019

Abstract Background In Italy, dengue virus is the most frequent agent of imported viral infections. The use of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) may be of help as a preliminary user-friendly quick assay to facilitate dengue diagnosis, as ordinary laboratory diagnosis of dengue fever may require special efforts in terms of tools availability, interpretation of results, and skilled personnel. The performance of RDTs, however, may vary according to different epidemiological and laboratory background. Methods We reviewed five years of laboratory records of two dengue RDT results (Colorimetric SD-Bioline Dengue-Duo-RDT and Fluorimetric SD-Biosensor-STANDARD-F-Dengue-RDT), able to detect viral NS1 antigen and specific IgM and IgG. Diagnostic parameters were calculated using as reference the results of molecular (RT-PCR) and serological (immunofluorescence, IFA) tests. Overall performance, calculated considering the final case definition, was included in the accuracy assessment of RDTs. Results The combined use of NS1 and IgM/IgG RDT for the detection of acute dengue cases resulted in an overall sensitivity and specificity of 87.2% and 97.9% for Colorimetric RDT, 96.2% and 96.2% for Fluorimetric RDT. NS1 was the most reliable marker of acute infection, while IgM resulted falsely positive in nine samples, including sera derived from 2 Zika and 4 non-arbovirus infected patients. Conclusions The inclusion of RDT in the diagnostic algorithm is of undeniable help in the prompt management and surveillance of dengue infection in non-endemic areas. Confirmatory tests are, however, necessary to rule in or rule out dengue fever diagnosis

Corpus e Atlante della pittura medievale a Roma (312-1431). Un modello possibile?

    No full text
In 2017 and in 2018, two new volumes of the project Corpus and Atlas of medieval painting in Rome are going to be published. The Corpus is meant to be an analytic overview of painting and its chronological and diachronic axis collocation. It represents an essential and powerful tool for the study of medieval painting of Rome. The Atlas sets the painting in the space, rejoicing it visually with architecture through the use of plans and 3D digital models. The system of Corpus and Atlas together is making medieval painting of Rome alive and talking, implementing more and more visual perspectives
