    Get PDF
Continuous heart rate monitors (CHRM) can give unique insights into a person\u27s physiological and psychological state; however, existing CHRMs are not suitable for continuous monitoring because they do not provide beat-to-beat accuracy and comfort needed for all-day use. Our group is currently developing a miniature earlobe mounted CHRM system which is both comfortable and provides beat-to-beat accuracy, based on a miniature heart rate sensing technology developed previously in our lab. The objective of this thesis is to design low power system firmware to perform key tasks: i) acquire heart rate and skin temperature data from wearable sensors; ii) signal process the raw heart rate data to calculate r-r interval; iii) optimize the heart rate sensor parameters for power and noise; iv) store the sensor data in local flash memory, and v) stream the data to an Android device. Each of the above functions was successfully implemented with low power consideration

The present study is based on information collected from 50 chilli growers, 12 retailers and 8 wholesalers from the Mokokchung district of Nagaland in the crop year 2012-13, through pre-tested well design questionnaire. Purposively the paper intent to discover the surplus, cost, margin and price spread of chilli production and marketing in Longsa village. The study resulted that after holding 9.5% for domestic purpose, producers are left with 90.5% as marketable surplus of which the actual marketed surplus is 86.33%; due to 4.17% loss in spoilage and wastage. Regression coefficient with and without dummy factor shows area and production are two major determinants having positive impact on marketed surplus at 1% probability level of significance. Further it has observed that a majority of the farmer-producer (52.3%) sell their produce to retailers i.e. channel – II indicating the most prominent channel. The net price received by producers in consumer’s rupee in channel – I is 97.63%, channel – II: 82.43% and channel – III: 61.9% signifying producer-consumer channel the highest marketing efficiency channel according Shepherd’s and Acharya-Agarwal methods. It further concluded that, 93% of chilli is traded in market by way of retailers and wholesalers and only 7% within village. Key Words: Nagaland, production, marketed surplus, cost, margin, price spread, efficiency, constraints

A new family of donor-acceptor systems comprising tin(IV) porphyrin and anthracene subunits: synthesis, spectroscopy and energy transfer studies

    Get PDF
A new family of covalently linked 'Sn(IV) porphyrin-anthracene'diad (1), triad (2) and tetrad (3) donor-acceptor (D-A) systems have been designed and synthesized in good-to-moderate yields. While diad 1 possesses one anthracene subunit at the peripheral (meso) position of the tin(IV) porphyrin scaffold, triad 2 possesses twotrans axial anthracene subunits at the tin(IV) centre. On the other hand, tetrad 3 is endowed with both the peripheral and axial anthracene subunits in its architecture. These D-A systems have been fully characterised by elemental analysis, FAB-MS, UV-Vis, 1H and 13C NMR and electrochemical methods. UV-Vis,NMR and redox data suggest the absence of intramolecular π-π interaction between the porphyrin and the anthracene/s in 1-3. Fluorescence from the anthracene subunit in 1 and 3 is found to be quenched in comparison with the fluorescence of free anthracene in four different solvents. This is not the case with compound 2. Excitation spectral data provides evidence for an intramolecular excitation energy transfer (EET) from the singlet anthracene to the porphyrin in 1 and 3. The energy transfer efficiency is in the order: 2 (almost negligible) < 3 (~30%) < 1 (nearly quantitative), with the peripheral anthracene → porphyrin pathway being largely favoured. This orientation dependence of EET could be analysed using Forster's dipole dipole mechanism

Improvement in Electrochemical Performance of Lithium Rich Li2RuO3 Cathode With Co-doping Strategy

    Get PDF
Lithium-rich layered oxides based on Ru are interesting as cathode materials because they have high energy density and reversible capacity. However, due to the problems of weak structural stability and voltage decay, their commercial utility is limited. To address this, we use a DFT+U quantum mechanics to investigate the co-doping strategy on Li2RuO3 (LRO) for improved battery performance. In particular, the effect of two co-dopants Ti and Co has been studied. The co-doping strategy has been found to significantly improve the structural and thermal stability of LRO. By slowing the oxygen removal reaction, Ti and Co improve structural stability. Co-doping with Ti and Co increases the maximum open circuit voltage at least by 5.5% and decreases the voltage reduction by a minimum of 44%. Bandgap is also increased by a minimum of 6% with co-doping. In particular, Li2Ru0.5Ti0.375Co0.125O3  provides the highest maximum voltage of 4.4V with 61% decrease in the voltage reduction and 40% lower bandgap (0.45eV)

Cd1 – xMgxS (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20) nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method for the first time. Compositional, morphological, structural and optical studies of the as prepared samples were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and Photoluminescence (PL) techniques. XRD studies revealed the structural phase transition from cubic to hexagonal and increase in the average grain size of the nanoparticles (lie in the range 1.4 nm to 2.8 nm) with increasing Mg content. EDAX spectra rules out the existence of impurities in the samples. Bandgap widening was observed in all the samples compared to bulk CdS (2.42 eV). Decrease in bandgap (3.02 eV to 2.54 eV), luminescence quenching and red shift of luminescence peak position were observed with increasing Mg in Cd1 – xMgxS. Adequate development of uterine receptivity is crucial for establishment of pregnancy. Expression of uterine receptivity molecules i.e. αvβ3 integrin, E-cadherin and mucin-1 could be affected by testosterone. The objective of this study was to investigate effect of testosterone on expression of these molecules during early pregnancy. 30 ovariectomised female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups that consisted of vehicle control, rats received eight days sex-steroid replacement regime (intended to mimic the hormonal changes in early pregnancy) and three groups of rats given testosterone (1 mg/kg/day) subcutaneously with or without flutamide or finasteride between day 6 and 8 representing the period of uterine receptivity. At the end of the treatment, rats were sacrificed and uteri were removed. Expression and distribution of αvβ3 integrin, E-cadherin and mucin-1 were examined by immunoflourescence and levels of messenger RNA (mRNAs) were evaluated by real-time PCR. Expression of αvβ3 integrin, E-cadherin and mucin-1 in the uteri of rats receiving sex-steroid replacement regime increased significantly as compared to control (p<0.05). In these rats, concomitant administration of testosterone between day 6 and 8 resulted in expression of αvβ3 integrin, E-cadherin and mucin-1 to decrease significantly (p<0.05) as compared to rats receiving sex-steroid replacement regime without testosterone treatment. Moreover, the testosterone effects were not antagonized by either flutamide or finasteride. As a result, reduced expression of uterine receptivity molecules by testosterone might interfere with early pregnancy establishment, therefore could adversely affect the female fertility
