Learning Shape Priors for Single-View 3D Completion and Reconstruction
The problem of single-view 3D shape completion or reconstruction is
challenging, because among the many possible shapes that explain an
observation, most are implausible and do not correspond to natural objects.
Recent research in the field has tackled this problem by exploiting the
expressiveness of deep convolutional networks. In fact, there is another level
of ambiguity that is often overlooked: among plausible shapes, there are still
multiple shapes that fit the 2D image equally well; i.e., the ground truth
shape is non-deterministic given a single-view input. Existing fully supervised
approaches fail to address this issue, and often produce blurry mean shapes
with smooth surfaces but no fine details.
In this paper, we propose ShapeHD, pushing the limit of single-view shape
completion and reconstruction by integrating deep generative models with
adversarially learned shape priors. The learned priors serve as a regularizer,
penalizing the model only if its output is unrealistic, not if it deviates from
the ground truth. Our design thus overcomes both levels of ambiguity
aforementioned. Experiments demonstrate that ShapeHD outperforms state of the
art by a large margin in both shape completion and shape reconstruction on
multiple real datasets.Comment: ECCV 2018. The first two authors contributed equally to this work.

Multi-omic detection of Mycobacterium leprae in archaeological human dental calculus
Mineralized dental plaque (calculus) has proven to be an excellent source of ancient biomolecules. Here we present a Mycobacterium leprae genome (6.6-fold), the causative agent of leprosy, recovered via shotgun sequencing of sixteenth-century human dental calculus from an individual from Trondheim, Norway. When phylogenetically placed, this genome falls in branch 3I among the diversity of other contemporary ancient strains from Northern Europe. Moreover, ancient mycobacterial peptides were retrieved via mass spectrometry-based proteomics, further validating the presence of the pathogen. Mycobacterium leprae can readily be detected in the oral cavity and associated mucosal membranes, which likely contributed to it being incorporated into this individual's dental calculus. This individual showed some possible, but not definitive, evidence of skeletal lesions associated with early-stage leprosy. This study is the first known example of successful multi-omics retrieval of M. leprae from archaeological dental calculus. Furthermore, we offer new insights into dental calculus as an alternative sample source to bones or teeth for detecting and molecularly characterizing M. leprae in individuals from the archaeological record.publishedVersio
Rice Phospholipase A Superfamily: Organization, Phylogenetic and Expression Analysis during Abiotic Stresses and Development
Background: Phospholipase A (PLA) is an important group of enzymes responsible for phospholipid hydrolysis in lipid signaling. PLAs have been implicated in abiotic stress signaling and developmental events in various plants species. Genome-wide analysis of PLA superfamily has been carried out in dicot plant Arabidopsis. A comprehensive genome-wide analysis of PLAs has not been presented yet in crop plant rice. Methodology/Principal Findings: A comprehensive bioinformatics analysis identified a total of 31 PLA encoding genes in the rice genome, which are divided into three classes; phospholipase A 1 (PLA 1), patatin like phospholipases (pPLA) and low molecular weight secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) based on their sequences and phylogeny. A subset of 10 rice PLAs exhibited chromosomal duplication, emphasizing the role of duplication in the expansion of this gene family in rice. Microarray expression profiling revealed a number of PLA members expressing differentially and significantly under abiotic stresses and reproductive development. Comparative expression analysis with Arabidopsis PLAs revealed a high degree of functional conservation between the orthologs in two plant species, which also indicated the vital role of PLAs in stress signaling and plant development across different plant species. Moreover, sub-cellular localization of a few candidates suggests their differential localization and functional role in the lipid signaling. Conclusion/Significance: The comprehensive analysis and expression profiling would provide a critical platform for th
