    Experimental investigation on free surface vortices driven by tangential inlets

    Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements have been carried out in order to analyze the structure of free surface vortices in a promoting geometry with two tangential inlets. Velocity fields associated to the free surface vortex have been obtained at different horizontal planes and Reynolds numbers. Average velocity fields have been calculated and tangential velocity profiles have been compared at different vortex stages and measurement planes. The results show that tangential flow is uniform along the vortex axis and it scales well with the average exit velocity. The tangential velocity profiles, in comparison to the potential behavior, show discrepancies especially at large distances from the vortex axis. Vorticity fields and circulation profiles have been also derived from the measured velocity fields and discussed. The circulation profiles increase along the vortex radius even at large distances from the vortex axis, so that the potential solution is not applicable at all. The comparison of tangential velocity and circulation profiles between promoted and free vortices, the last presented in a previous paper, shows that the tangential motion in a driven vortex is more intense and predominant over the sink effect (radial motion), except very close to the tank bottom, as in a forced configuration (i.e. rotating cylindrical tank)

    Investigation on bathtub vortex flow field by Particle Image Velocimetry

    An experimental investigation on bathtub vortices has been performed by using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Velocity fields associated to the free surface vortex were obtained at three horizontal planes and four Reynolds numbers, i.e. between 2400 and 11000 (calculated with reference to the exit hole diameter and the mean exit velocity). Due to the unsteady behavior of the low field, the vortex center positions have been identified and the vortex paths were reconstructed for all experiments. Average velocity fields have been calculated by aligning the vortex centers at each frame, in order to derive radial and tangential velocity profiles, to be compared at different Reynolds numbers and measurement planes. The results show that the radial motion assumes a potential behavior when it is near the exit hole, scaling quite well with the average exit velocity (thus with the corresponding Reynolds number). On the other hand, the tangential component is well approximated by the Rankine’s flow potential solution only near the free surface, the tangential velocity peak increment not being linearly proportional to the outlet velocity. Vorticity fields and circulation profiles have been derived from the measured velocity fields and discussed. Turbulence fluctuations statistical analysis gives also evidence of a clear dependence on Reynolds number and distance from the exit hole

    The behavior of Silicon Carbide Power MOSFETs under stressful short circuit conditions is investigated in this paper. Illustration of two different short-circuit failure phenomena for Silicon Carbide Power MOSFETs are thoroughly reported. Experimental evidences and TCAD electro-thermal simulations are exploited to describe and discriminate the failure sources. Physical causes are finally investigated and explained by means of properly calibrated numerical investigations, and are reported along with their effects on devices short-circuit capability

    Culturomics: bacterial species isolated in 3 healthy donors for faecal microbiota transplantation in Clostridium difficile infection

    Background. Clostridium difficile infections are the main cause of nosocomial acquired diarrhea, because of prolonged antibiotic regimens. In the last years, mortality has increased due to recurrent infections caused by metronidazole and vancomicin resistant hypervirulent C. difficile strain 027. Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is an infusion of faecal material obtained from healthy donors. This procedure reduces mortality in recurrent C. difficile infections (CDI). In this study we identified bacterial species obtained from donors' stool samples using culturomics. Materials and methods. Three donors were selected for FMT in three recipients affected by CDI. Faces obtained for FMT underwent culturomics, applying 17 different culture methods. Results and conclusions. Several different bacteria were isolated from donors. In two donors 4 potentially pathogenic bacteria were isolated; this suggests the use of culturomics for donors' screening or for selection of bacteria to infuse

    Machine Learning for Early Diagnosis of ATTRv Amyloidosis in Non-Endemic Areas: A Multicenter Study from Italy

    Background: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv) is an adult-onset multisystemic disease, affecting the peripheral nerves, heart, gastrointestinal tract, eyes, and kidneys. Nowadays, several treatment options are available; thus, avoiding misdiagnosis is crucial to starting therapy in early disease stages. However, clinical diagnosis may be difficult, as the disease may present with unspecific symptoms and signs. We hypothesize that the diagnostic process may benefit from the use of machine learning (ML). Methods: 397 patients referring to neuromuscular clinics in 4 centers from the south of Italy with neuropathy and at least 1 more red flag, as well as undergoing genetic testing for ATTRv, were considered. Then, only probands were considered for analysis. Hence, a cohort of 184 patients, 93 with positive and 91 (age- and sex-matched) with negative genetics, was considered for the classification task. The XGBoost (XGB) algorithm was trained to classify positive and negative TTR mutation patients. The SHAP method was used as an explainable artificial intelligence algorithm to interpret the model findings. Results: diabetes, gender, unexplained weight loss, cardiomyopathy, bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ocular symptoms, autonomic symptoms, ataxia, renal dysfunction, lumbar canal stenosis, and history of autoimmunity were used for the model training. The XGB model showed an accuracy of 0.707 ± 0.101, a sensitivity of 0.712 ± 0.147, a specificity of 0.704 ± 0.150, and an AUC-ROC of 0.752 ± 0.107. Using the SHAP explanation, it was confirmed that unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal symptoms, and cardiomyopathy showed a significant association with the genetic diagnosis of ATTRv, while bilateral CTS, diabetes, autoimmunity, and ocular and renal involvement were associated with a negative genetic test. Conclusions: Our data show that ML might potentially be a useful instrument to identify patients with neuropathy that should undergo genetic testing for ATTRv. Unexplained weight loss and cardiomyopathy are relevant red flags in ATTRv in the south of Italy. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings
