    Working Status and Perception of Adulthood: A Comparison between Italian and Dutch Emerging Adults.

    The purpose of this study was (a) to identify the criteria Italian and Dutch emerging adults consider important to achieve adulthood; (b) to compare Italian emerging adults' criteria with the criteria espoused by Dutch emerging adults; and (c) to examine how these criteria might differ on the basis of the working status (temporary job contract vs. permanent job contract) of the participants. Participants included 111 Italian (M = 25 years) and 151 Dutch (M = 22 years) university working students. Results revealed that (a) on average, Italian and Dutch emerging adults agreed upon the same order of importance for the criteria of adulthood presented to them; (b) Italian participants, more than Dutch participants, considered particularly important for defining the adult status the criteria related to family capacities; and (c) taking into account the working status of the participants, the answers differed only approaching significance. These findings have important implications for future research as they evidence that emerging adults experience their path to adulthood differently depending on their nationality. Specifically, the main contribution of this study is to have tested such hypotheses in a cross-national manner where contextual and individual differences are both taken into account

    Abrogation of Junctional Adhesion Molecule-A Expression Induces Cell Apoptosis and Reduces Breast Cancer Progression

    Intercellular junctions promote homotypic cell to cell adhesion and transfer intracellular signals which control cell growth and apoptosis. Junctional adhesion molecule-A (JAM-A) is a transmembrane immunoglobulin located at tight junctions of normal epithelial cells of mammary ducts and glands. In the present paper we show that JAM-A acts as a survival factor for mammary carcinoma cells. JAM-A null mice expressing Polyoma Middle T under MMTV promoter develop significantly smaller mammary tumors than JAM-A positive mice. Angiogenesis and inflammatory or immune infiltrate were not statistically modified in absence of JAM-A but tumor cell apoptosis was significantly increased. Tumor cells isolated from JAM-A null mice or 4T1 cells incubated with JAM-A blocking antibodies showed reduced growth and increased apoptosis which paralleled altered junctional architecture and adhesive function. In a breast cancer clinical data set, tissue microarray data show that JAM-A expression correlates with poor prognosis. Gene expression analysis of mouse tumor samples showed a correlation between genes enriched in human G3 tumors and genes over expressed in JAM-A +/+ mammary tumors. Conversely, genes enriched in G1 human tumors correlate with genes overexpressed in JAM-A−/− tumors. We conclude that down regulation of JAM-A reduces tumor aggressive behavior by increasing cell susceptibility to apoptosis. JAM-A may be considered a negative prognostic factor and a potential therapeutic target

    In this paper, an integrated prospecting performed in the atypical Romanesque church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro in Brindisi, southern Italy is presented. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and ultrasonic data have been gathered on the circular load-bearing colonnade of the monument. Here the results achieved on two of the columns are shown. The GPR data have been processed and have allowed to identify and focus the medieval internal metallic hinges joining the stone trunks in one of the columns and some reinforcement rebars in the other (and probably also the residual track of a restored fracture). The ultrasonic data have allowed to monitor the state of compactness and to assess the effectiveness of reinforcement interventions on the columns

    A Novel Hyperspectral Method to Detect Moldy Core in Apple Fruits

    An innovative low-cost device based on hyperspectral spectroscopy in the near infrared (NIR) spectral region is proposed for the non-invasive detection of moldy core (MC) in apples. The system, based on light collection by an integrating sphere, was tested on 70 apples cultivar (cv) Golden Delicious infected by Alternaria alternata, one of the main pathogens responsible for MC disease. Apples were sampled in vertical and horizontal positions during five measurement rounds in 13 days’ time, and 700 spectral signatures were collected. Spectral correlation together with transmittance temporal patterns and ANOVA showed that the spectral region from 863.38 to 877.69 nm was most linked to MC presence. Then, two binary classification models based on Artificial Neural Network Pattern Recognition (ANN-AP) and Bagging Classifier (BC) with decision trees were developed, revealing a better detection capability by ANN-AP, especially in the early stage of infection, where the predictive accuracy was 100% at round 1 and 97.15% at round 2. In subsequent rounds, the classification results were similar in ANN-AP and BC models. The system proposed surpassed previous MC detection methods, needing only one measurement per fruit, while further research is needed to extend it to different cultivars or fruits

    In this paper we describe the synthesis and the characterization of a series of cyclophosphazenes substituted with 2-oxazoline-containing moieties, with and without optical activity. These products could be obtained by reacting cyclophosphazenes containing six (hexachlorocyclophosphazene, C-6-Cl), two (2,2-dichloro-4,4,6,6-bis[spiro(2′,2″-dioxy-1′, 1″-biphenyl)]cyclophosphazene, C-2-Cl) and one (pentakis(phenoxy) monochlorocyclophosphazene, C-1-Cl) chlorine atoms, respectively, with a series of 4-hydroxyphenyl-2-oxazolines, as obtained by condensation reaction of methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate with 2-aminoethanol and with chiral and racemic 1-amino-2-propanol, and successive cyclization reactions of the resulting hydroxyamides to 2-oxazoline compounds
