    Let R be a prime ring of characteristic different from 2, U the Utumi quotient ring of R, C the extended centroid of R, F and G non-zero generalized derivations of R. If the composition (FG) acts as a Lie derivation on R, then (FG) is a derivation of R and one of the following holds: there exist α C and a U such that F(x)=[a,x] and G(x)=α x, for all x R; G is an usual derivation of R and there exists α C such that F(x)=α x, for all x R; there exist α, β C and a derivation h of R such that F(x)=α x+h(x), G(x)=β x, for all x R, and α β+h(β)=0. Moreover in this case h is not an inner derivation of R; there exist a\u27, c\u27 U such that F(x)=a\u27x, G(x)=c\u27x, for all x R, with a\u27c\u27=0; there exist b\u27, q\u27 U such that F(x)=xb\u27, G(x)=xq\u27, for all x R, with q\u27b\u27=0; there exist c\u27, q\u27 U, η, γ C such that F(x)=η (xq\u27-c\u27x)+γ x, G(x)=c\u27x+xq\u27, for all x R, with γ c\u27-η c\u272=-γ q\u27-η q\u272

Idiopathic benign paroxysmal vertigo in children, a migraine precursor.

OBJECTIVES: We describe the case of a young girl in whom transient deafness occurred when her core body temperature rose. METHODS: The patient was referred for a series of audiological and neurologic evaluations performed over time in both afebrile and febrile states, as well as after a stress test (with a treadmill) in which the body temperature rise simulated the febrile state. RESULTS: The patient was found to have a temporary bilateral hearing loss, but had normal distortion product otoacoustic emissions. Moreover, auditory brain stem responses revealed the absence of neural synchrony when her core body temperature increased. CONCLUSIONS: These results are consistent with a temperature-dependent auditory neuropathy, a rare condition in which patients show normal outer hair cell function and abnormal neural function of the eighth cranial nerve. The symptom is reminiscent of Uhthoff's phenomenon, which is described as transient visual loss and is usually observed in multiple sclerosis. This case of temperature-dependent auditory neuropathy is noteworthy because it sheds light on a disorder of which there have been few reports in the literature. We discuss its similarity to Uhthoff's phenomenon

Energy-efficient torque-vectoring control of electric vehicles with multiple drivetrains

    Get PDF
The safety benefits of torque-vectoring control of electric vehicles with multiple drivetrains are well known and extensively discussed in the literature. Also, several authors analyze wheel torque control allocation algorithms for reducing the energy consumption while obtaining the wheel torque demand and reference yaw moment specified by the higher layer of a torque-vectoring controller. Based on a set of novel experimental results, this study demonstrates that further significant energy consumption reductions can be achieved through the appropriate tuning of the reference understeer characteristics. The effects of drivetrain power losses and tire slip power losses are discussed for the case of identical drivetrains at the four vehicle corners. Easily implementable yet effective rule-based algorithms are presented for the set-up of the energy-efficient reference yaw rate, feedforward yaw moment and wheel torque distribution of the torque-vectoring controller

ANN Modelling to Optimize Manufacturing Process

    Get PDF
Neural network (NN) model is an efficient and accurate tool for simulating manufacturing processes. Various authors adopted artificial neural networks (ANNs) to optimize multiresponse parameters in manufacturing processes. In most cases the adoption of ANN allows to predict the mechanical proprieties of processed products on the basis of given technological parameters. Therefore the implementation of ANN is hugely beneficial in industrial applications in order to save cost and material resources. In this chapter, following an introduction on the application of the ANN to the manufacturing process, it will be described an important study that has been published on international journals and that has investigated the use of the ANNs for the monitoring, controlling and optimization of the process. Experimental observations were collected in order to train the network and establish numerical relationships between process-related factors and mechanical features of the welded joints. Finally, an evaluation of time-costs parameters of the process, using the control of the ANN model, is conducted in order to identify the costs and the benefits of the prediction model adopted

On the energy efficiency of electric vehicles with multiple motors

Electric Vehicles (EVs) with multiple motors permit to design the steady-state cornering response by imposing reference understeer characteristics according to expected vehicle handling quality targets. To this aim a direct yaw moment is generated by assigning different torque demands to the left and right vehicle sides. The reference understeer characteristic has an impact on the drivetrain input power as well. In parallel, a Control Allocation (CA) strategy can be employed to achieve an energy-efficient wheel torque distribution generating the reference yaw moment and wheel torque. To the knowledge of the authors, for the first time this paper experimentally compares and critically analyses the potential energy efficiency benefits achievable through the appropriate set-up of the reference understeer characteristics and wheel torque CA. Interestingly, the experiments on a four wheel-drive EV demonstrator show that higher energy savings can be obtained through the appropriate tuning of the reference cornering response rather than with an energy efficient CA

Design, analysis and investigation of an independent suspension for passenger cars

    Get PDF
The objective of this paper is the design of a front suspension. The layout used is the McPherson strut, widely adopted for road cars due to its simplicity and to the limited space required. The handling, comfort and durability of the suspension are strictly related to the position of the hardpoints, and to the elastic elements. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate the roll behavior of a standard vehicle during cornering. A multi-body dynamics software is used to perform ramp-steer simulations on a full-vehicle model. Results show the different peculiarities of three specific cases of analysis, each of them emphasising the effects of a specific parameter on the whole system

Hydrological Web Services for Operational Flood Risk Monitoring and Forecasting at Local Scale in Niger

    Get PDF
Emerging hydrological services provide stakeholders and political authorities with useful and reliable information to support the decision-making process and develop flood risk management strategies. Most of these services adopt the paradigm of open data and standard web services, paving the way to increase distributed hydrometeorological services’ interoperability. Moreover, sharing of data, models, information, and the use of open-source software, greatly contributes to expanding the knowledge on flood risk and to increasing flood preparedness. Nevertheless, services’ interoperability and open data are not common in local systems implemented in developing countries. This paper presents the web platform and related services developed for the Local Flood Early Warning System of the Sirba River in Niger (SLAPIS) to tailor hydroclimatic information to the user’s needs, both in content and format. Building upon open-source software components and interoperable web services, we created a software framework covering data capture and storage, data flow management procedures from several data providers, real-time web publication, and service-based information dissemination. The geospatial infrastructure and web services respond to the actual and local decision-making context to improve the usability and usefulness of information derived from hydrometeorological forecasts, hydraulic models, and real-time observations. This paper presents also the results of the three years of operational campaigns for flood early warning on the Sirba River in Niger. Semiautomatic flood warnings tailored and provided to end users bridge the gap between available technology and local users’ needs for adaptation, mitigation, and flood risk management, and make progress toward the sustainable development goals
