    The selection of migrants and returnees in Romania: Evidence and long-run implications

    This paper uses census and survey data to identify the wage earning ability and the selection of recent Romanian migrants and returnees. We construct measures of selection across skill groups and estimate the average and the skill-specific premium for migration and return for three typical destinations of Romanian migrants after 1990. Once we account for migration costs, we find evidence that the selection and sorting of migrants by skills is driven by different returns in countries of destination. We also find that the return premium increases with migrants' skills and this drives the positive selection of returnees relative to non-migrants. As these findings are consistent with a model of rational choice in the migration decisions, we simulate a rational-agent model of education, migration and return. Our results suggest that for a source country like Romania relatively high rates of temporary migration might have positive long-run effects on average skills and wages

    Action perception as hypothesis testing

    We present a novel computational model that describes action perception as an active inferential process that combines motor prediction (the reuse of our own motor system to predict perceived movements) and hypothesis testing (the use of eye movements to disambiguate amongst hypotheses). The system uses a generative model of how (arm and hand) actions are performed to generate hypothesis-specific visual predictions, and directs saccades to the most informative places of the visual scene to test these predictions – and underlying hypotheses. We test the model using eye movement data from a human action observation study. In both the human study and our model, saccades are proactive whenever context affords accurate action prediction; but uncertainty induces a more reactive gaze strategy, via tracking the observed movements. Our model offers a novel perspective on action observation that highlights its active nature based on prediction dynamics and hypothesis testing

    The eye in hand: predicting others' behavior by integrating multiple sources of information

    The ability to predict the outcome of other beings' actions confers significant adaptive advantages. Experiments have assessed that human action observation can use multiple information sources, but it is currently unknown how they are integrated and how conflicts between them are resolved. To address this issue, we designed an action observation paradigm requiring the integration of multiple, potentially conflicting sources of evidence about the action target: the actor's gaze direction, hand preshape, and arm trajectory, and their availability and relative uncertainty in time. In two experiments, we analyzed participants' action prediction ability by using eye tracking and behavioral measures. The results show that the information provided by the actor's gaze affected participants' explicit predictions. However, results also show that gaze information was disregarded as soon as information on the actor's hand preshape was available, and this latter information source had widespread effects on participants' prediction ability. Furthermore, as the action unfolded in time, participants relied increasingly more on the arm movement source, showing sensitivity to its increasing informativeness. Therefore, the results suggest that the brain forms a robust estimate of the actor's motor intention by integrating multiple sources of information. However, when informative motor cues such as a preshaped hand with a given grip are available and might help in selecting action targets, people tend to capitalize on such motor cues, thus turning out to be more accurate and fast in inferring the object to be manipulated by the other's hand. </jats:p

    Using Two-Step Cluster Analysis and Latent Class Cluster Analysis to Classify the Cognitive Heterogeneity of Cross-Diagnostic Psychiatric Inpatients

    The heterogeneity of cognitive profiles among psychiatric patients has been reported to carry significant clinical information. However, how to best characterize such cognitive heterogeneity is still a matter of debate. Despite being well suited for clinical data, cluster analysis techniques, like the Two-Step and the Latent Class, received little to no attention in the literature. The present study aimed to test the validity of the cluster solutions obtained with Two-Step and Latent Class cluster analysis on the cognitive profile of a cross-diagnostic sample of 387 psychiatric inpatients. Two-Step and Latent Class cluster analysis produced similar and reliable solutions. The overall results reported that it is possible to group all psychiatric inpatients into Low and High Cognitive Profiles, with a higher degree of cognitive heterogeneity in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients than in depressive disorders and personality disorder patients

    Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy after ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome with wild-type ABCB4 gene: a peculiar case and literature review

    Background: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) in the first trimester occurring after ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a rare condition and few cases are reported in the literature. Hyperestrogenism may explain this problem in genetically predisposed women. The objective of this article is to report one of these rare cases and offer an overview of the other published cases. Case presentation: We report a case of severe OHSS followed by ICP in the first trimester. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit and was treated according to the guidelines for the management of OHSS. Moreover, the patient also received ursodeoxycholic acid for ICP, which brought to an improvement of her clinical conditions. The pregnancy continued without other complications until the 36th week of gestation, when the patient developed ICP in the third trimester and underwent cesarean section for increased bile acid levels and cardiotocographic (CTG) pathologic alterations. The newborn was a healthy baby weighing 2500 gr. We also reviewed other case reports published by other authors about this clinical condition. We present what is, to our knowledge, the first case of ICP developed in the first trimester of pregnancy after OHSS in which genetic polymorphisms of ABCB4 (MDR3) have been investigated. Conclusions: ICP in the first trimester might be induced by elevated serum estrogen levels after OHSS in genetically predisposed women. In these women, it might be useful to check for genetic polymorphisms to know if they have a predisposition for ICP recurrence in the third trimester of pregnancy

    Interpretation, emotional reactions and daily life implications of hallucination-like experiences in clinical and nonclinical populations

    Background: Research on Hallucination-Like Experiences (HLEs) has not yet explored whether people without psychosis who have HLEs attribute the same level of signiïŹcance to them. This signiïŹ cance includes whether or not the HLEs elicit similar emotional reactions in people with and without psychosis, or if the HLEs occur in same context between the two groups. The objective of this study was to compare the characteristics of these experiences in a non-clinical group and a clinical group of patients with schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Method: Both groups were evaluated to determine the prevalence of HLEs. After the evaluation, they were interviewed about the characteristics of these experiences. Results: Both groups sought to actively eliminate the HLEs, could identify the presence of a trigger factor, and experienced little perceived control. However, HLEs elicited more anxiety, discomfort and interference in daily life in the clinical group than in the nonclinical group. Furthermore, the clinical group members deïŹ ned their hallucinations more negatively and were reported to have experienced them under stressful events. Conclusions: These ïŹndings suggest that the two experiences are not entirely equivalent, especially when taking into account the emotional reaction produced by these experiences and the meaning people attach to them.InterpretaciĂłn, reacciĂłn emocional e implicaciones en la vida diaria de experiencias de tipo alucinatorias en poblaciĂłn clĂ­nica y no clĂ­nica. Antecedentes: la investigaciĂłn en Experiencias de Tipo Alucinatorias (HLEs en inglĂ©s) aĂșn no ha explorado si las personas sin psicosis que las experimentan les atribuyen el mismo signiïŹ cado, si estas provocan las mismas reacciones emocionales o si ocurren en los mismos contextos que en la psicosis. El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar las caracterĂ­sticas de estas experiencias entre un grupo no clĂ­nico y un grupo clĂ­nico de pacientes con esquizofrenia y trastornos del espectro esquizofrĂ©nico. MĂ©todo: ambos grupos fueron evaluados para determinar la prevalencia de las HLEs, despuĂ©s de lo cual fueron entrevistados sobre las caracterĂ­sticas de estas experiencias. Resultados: ambos grupos buscan activamente eliminar estas experiencias; pueden identiïŹcar la presencia de un factor desencadenante, y poco control percibido. Sin embargo, las HLEs provocaron mĂĄs ansiedad, malestar e interferencia en la vida diaria en el grupo clĂ­nico que en el grupo no clĂ­nico. AdemĂĄs, el grupo clĂ­nico deïŹniĂł sus HLEs como mĂĄs negativas y experimentadas bajo situaciones estresantes.     Lymphedema and nutrition: A review

    Nutrition is considered a basic component in the management of any vascular disease. Lymphedema is characterised by an increase of interstitial fluid due to a lymphatic system morphological and/or functional alteration. Therapeutic management of lymphedema includes a multi-faceted approach based on compression and physiotherapy mainly. Weight control and antiinflammatory and anti-edema diet are two additional necessary components of the holistic therapy in presence of primary or secondary limb lymphedema. This narrative review provides the available information derived from the scientific literature on nutrition in lymphedema, which anyway lacks robust evidence. Additional information and speculations are provided on the role of food, diet, nutraceuticals and fasting on the basic processes at the root of the chronic progressive degeneration of tissue lymph stasis, i.e. weight excess, inflammation, edema, fibroadiposis. More targeted and randomized studies are needed in order to assess and standardise the obvious, so far neglected, role of nutrition in lymphedema patients

    Endothelial SIRT6 deficiency promotes arterial thrombosis in mice

    OBJECTIVE Arterial thrombosis may be initiated by endothelial inflammation or denudation, activation of blood-borne elements or the coagulation system. Tissue factor (TF), a central trigger of the coagulation cascade, is regulated by the pro-inflammatory NF-ÎșB-dependent pathways. Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) is a nuclear member of the sirtuin family of NAD+^{+}-dependent deacetylases and is known to inhibit NF-ÎșB signaling. Its constitutive deletion in mice shows early lethality with hypoglycemia and accelerated aging. Of note, the role of SIRT6 in arterial thrombosis remains unknown. Thus, we hypothesized that endothelial SIRT6 protects from arterial thrombosis by modulating inhibition of NF-ÎșB-associated pathways. APPROACH AND RESULTS Using a laser-induced carotid thrombosis model, in vivo arterial occlusion occurred 45% faster in 12-week-old male endothelial-specific Sirt6−/−^{-/-} mice as compared to Sirt6fl/fl^{fl/fl} controls (n ≄ 9 per group; p = 0.0012). Levels of procoagulant TF were increased in animals lacking endothelial SIRT6 as compared to control littermates. Similarly, in cultured human aortic endothelial cells, SIRT6 knockdown increased TF mRNA, protein and activity. Moreover, SIRT6 knockdown increased mRNA levels of NF-ÎșB-associated genes tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase 1 (PARP-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2); at the protein level, COX-2, VCAM-1, TNF-α, and cleaved PARP-1 remained increased after Sirt6 knockdown. CONCLUSIONS Endothelium-specific Sirt6 deletion promotes arterial thrombosis in mice. In cultured human aortic endothelial cells, SIRT6 silencing enhances TF expression and activates pro-inflammatory pathways including TNF-α, cleaved PARP-1, VCAM-1 and COX-2. Hence, endogenous endothelial SIRT6 exerts a protective role in experimental arterial thrombosis
