    HPOTP low-speed flexible rotor balancing, phase 1

    A method was developed that shows promise in overcoming many balancing limitations. This method establishes one or more windows for low speed, out-of-housing balancing of flexible rotors. These windows are regions of speed and support flexibility where two conditions are simultaneously fulfilled. First, the rotor system behaves flexibly; therefore, there is separation among balance planes. Second, the response due to balance weights is large enough to reliably measure. The analytic formulation of the low-speed flexible rotor balancing method is described. The results of proof-of-principle tests conducted under the program are presented. Based on this effort, it is concluded that low speed flexible rotor balancing is a viable technology. In particular, the method can be used to balance a rotor bearing system at low speed which results in smooth operation above more than one bending critical speed. Furthermore, this balancing methodology is applicable to SSME turbopump rotors

    A Geometric Monte Carlo Algorithm for the Antiferromagnetic Ising model with "Topological" Term at θ=π\theta=\pi

    In this work we study the two and three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with an imaginary magnetic field iθi\theta at θ=π\theta=\pi. In order to perform numerical simulations of the system we introduce a new geometric algorithm not affected by the sign problem. Our results for the 2D2D model are in agreement with the analytical solutions. We also present new results for the 3D3D model which are qualitatively in agreement with mean-field predictions

    Scaling relations of the colour-detected cluster RzCS 052 at z=1.016 and of some other high redshift clusters

    We report on the discovery of the z=1.016 cluster RzCS 052 using a modified red sequence method, followup spectroscopy and X-ray imaging. This cluster has a velocity dispersion of 710+-150 km/s, a virial mass of 4.0e14 Msol (based on 21 spectroscopically confirmed members) and an X-ray luminosity of (0.68+- 0.47)e44 ergs/s in the [1-4] keV band. This optically selected cluster appears to be of richness class 3 and to follow the known L_X-sigma_v relation for high redshift X-ray selected clusters. Using these data, we find that the halo occupation number for this cluster is only marginally consistent with what expected assuming a self-similar evolution of cluster scaling relations, suggesting perhaps a break of them at z~1. We also rule out a strong galaxy merging activity between z=1 and today. Finally, we present a Bayesian approach to measuring cluster velocity dispersions and X-ray luminosities in the presence of a background: we critically reanalyze recent claims for X-ray underluminous clusters using these techniques and find that the clusters can be accommodated within the existing L_X -sigma_v relation.Comment: MNRAS, in pres

    Identification of the Coronal Sources of the Fast Solar Wind

    The present spectroscopic study of the ultraviolet coronal emission in a polar hole, detected on April 6-9, 1996 with the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer aboard the SOHO spacecraft, identifies the inter-plume lanes and background coronal hole regions as the channels where the fast solar wind is preferentially accelerated. In inter-plume lanes, at heliocentric distance 1.7 \rsun, the corona expands at a rate between 105 km/s and 150 km/s, that is, much faster than in plumes where the outflow velocity is between 0 km/s and 65 km/s. The wind velocity is inferred from the Doppler dimming of the O VI λλ\lambda\lambda 1032, 1037 \AA lines, within a range of values, whose lower and upper limit corresponds to anisotropic and isotropic velocity distribution of the oxygen coronal ions, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, Accepted by ApJ Letter

    Phase structure of a generalized Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with Wilson fermions in the mean field or large NN-expansion

    We analyze the vacuum structure of a generalized lattice Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with two flavors of Wilson fermions, such that its continuum action is the most general four-fermion action with 'trivial' color interactions, and having a SU(2)VxSU(2)ASU(2)_V x SU(2)_A symmetry in the chiral limit. The phase structure of this model in the space of the two four-fermion couplings shows, in addition to the standard Aoki phases, new phases with !=0 != 0, in close analogy to similar results recently suggested by some of us for lattice QCD with two degenerate Wilson fermions. This result shows how the phase structure of an effective model for low energy QCD cannot be entirely understood from Wilson Chiral Perturbation Theory, based on the standard QCD chiral effective Lagrangian approach.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, sent to Nuclear Physics

    Development and application of a unified balancing approach with multiple constraints

    The development of a general analytic approach to constrained balancing that is consistent with past influence coefficient methods is described. The approach uses Lagrange multipliers to impose orbit and/or weight constraints; these constraints are combined with the least squares minimization process to provide a set of coupled equations that result in a single solution form for determining correction weights. Proper selection of constraints results in the capability to: (1) balance higher speeds without disturbing previously balanced modes, thru the use of modal trial weight sets; (2) balance off-critical speeds; and (3) balance decoupled modes by use of a single balance plane. If no constraints are imposed, this solution form reduces to the general weighted least squares influence coefficient method. A test facility used to examine the use of the general constrained balancing procedure and application of modal trial weight ratios is also described

An interaction variable was created to see how race influenced these categories. For example, whether a white feminist might support Black Lives Matter more or less than a Black feminist or a white non-feminist. Race is the main determinant of support for Black Lives Matter
