Ontological Difference and Indeterminacy of Interpretation
At issue in this paper is the unfinished dialogue between hermeneutic phenomenology and hermeneutic logic. The paper touches upon two historical contexts of this dialogue. In scrutinizing them I discuss the relationship between philosophical hermeneutics and non-representationalist epistemology. The view gets spelled out that the norms of truthfulness, objectivity, empirical adequacy, and other epistemological characteristics of interpretation become generated within characteristic hermeneutic situations. By elaborating on Heidegger’s nexus between projected understanding and interpretative articulation, the notion of hermeneutic forestructuring of interpretative practices is introduced. Scrutinizing this notion allows one to circumscribe characteristic hermeneutic situations. At issue in this paper is the unfinished dialogue between hermeneutic phenomenology and hermeneutic logic.
The Natural Ontological Attitude in a Hermeneutic Context
My aim in this paper is to re-examine Arthur Fine’s concept of the natural ontological attitude. Whereas earlier critical interpretations focus on the compatibility of NOA with scientific realism, I argue that Fine’s conception is to be recast in terms of an interpretative theory of scientific research. Specifically, I make the case that the hermeneutic reformulation of NOA is unavoidable when at stake are the issues of the structural, conceptual, and experimental articulation of scientific domain. The paper concludes by considering the formation of local epistemological positions in the research process

eMath 3.0: building blocks for a social and semantic Web for online mathematics & elearning
In this paper we present recent developments in content markup for mathematics, and a corresponding software stack that functions as an enabling technology for a social and semantic web for the STEM disciplines. We show the potential of this technology in two eMath 3.0 applications: PlanetMathRedux, a re-implementation of the mathematical encyclopedia PlanetMath.org, and PantaRheiRedux, a community reader for course materials. These applications indicate both present and potential uses for this software as a basis for eLearning applications in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through the addition of suitable pedagogies
Influence of grape processing technology on the characteristics of the obtained distillates
In the production of wine distillates, the factors influencing their composition, respectively their quality, can be divided into the following directions: composition of grapes (as raw material), the technology for its processing and alcoholic fermentation to obtain wine material, as well as the method of distillation of the wine material to derive a distillate. Each of these factors is important for the production of quality wine distillate and significantly affects the concentration of chemical substances that determine its aromatic and flavour profile. The present study was carried out with Muscat Ottonel grapes, a raw material typical for the production of Muscat brandies, through double batch distillation. The grapes are processed and vinified according to three different technological schemes. It is established their influence on both the chemical composition of the wine materials and the received distillate fractions, typical for batch distillation
Improving the Representation and Conversion of Mathematical Formulae by Considering their Textual Context
Mathematical formulae represent complex semantic information in a concise
form. Especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics,
mathematical formulae are crucial to communicate information, e.g., in
scientific papers, and to perform computations using computer algebra systems.
Enabling computers to access the information encoded in mathematical formulae
requires machine-readable formats that can represent both the presentation and
content, i.e., the semantics, of formulae. Exchanging such information between
systems additionally requires conversion methods for mathematical
representation formats. We analyze how the semantic enrichment of formulae
improves the format conversion process and show that considering the textual
context of formulae reduces the error rate of such conversions. Our main
contributions are: (1) providing an openly available benchmark dataset for the
mathematical format conversion task consisting of a newly created test
collection, an extensive, manually curated gold standard and task-specific
evaluation metrics; (2) performing a quantitative evaluation of
state-of-the-art tools for mathematical format conversions; (3) presenting a
new approach that considers the textual context of formulae to reduce the error
rate for mathematical format conversions. Our benchmark dataset facilitates
future research on mathematical format conversions as well as research on many
problems in mathematical information retrieval. Because we annotated and linked
all components of formulae, e.g., identifiers, operators and other entities, to
Wikidata entries, the gold standard can, for instance, be used to train methods
for formula concept discovery and recognition. Such methods can then be applied
to improve mathematical information retrieval systems, e.g., for semantic
formula search, recommendation of mathematical content, or detection of
mathematical plagiarism.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
