General approach to potentials with two known levels
We present the general form of potentials with two given energy levels
, and find corresponding wave functions. These entities are
expressed in terms of one function and one parameter -. We show how the quantum numbers of both levels depend on
properties of the function . Our approach does not need resorting to
the technique of supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics but automatically

GAIA: Composition, Formation and Evolution of the Galaxy
The GAIA astrometric mission has recently been approved as one of the next
two `cornerstones' of ESA's science programme, with a launch date target of not
later than mid-2012. GAIA will provide positional and radial velocity
measurements with the accuracies needed to produce a stereoscopic and kinematic
census of about one billion stars throughout our Galaxy (and into the Local
Group), amounting to about 1 per cent of the Galactic stellar population.
GAIA's main scientific goal is to clarify the origin and history of our Galaxy,
from a quantitative census of the stellar populations. It will advance
questions such as when the stars in our Galaxy formed, when and how it was
assembled, and its distribution of dark matter. The survey aims for
completeness to V=20 mag, with accuracies of about 10 microarcsec at 15 mag.
Combined with astrophysical information for each star, provided by on-board
multi-colour photometry and (limited) spectroscopy, these data will have the
precision necessary to quantify the early formation, and subsequent dynamical,
chemical and star formation evolution of our Galaxy. Additional products
include detection and orbital classification of tens of thousands of
extra-Solar planetary systems, and a comprehensive survey of some 10^5-10^6
minor bodies in our Solar System, through galaxies in the nearby Universe, to
some 500,000 distant quasars. It will provide a number of stringent new tests
of general relativity and cosmology. The complete satellite system was
evaluated as part of a detailed technology study, including a detailed payload
design, corresponding accuracy assesments, and results from a prototype data

Synchronous Evolution of Galaxies in Groups: NGC 524 Group
By means of panoramic spectroscopy at the SAO RAS BTA telescope, we
investigated the properties of stellar populations in the central regions of
five early-type galaxies -- the NGC 524 group members. The evolution of the
central regions of galaxies looks synchronized: the average age of stars in the
bulges of all the five galaxies lies in the range of 3--6 Gyr. Four of the five
galaxies revealed synchronized bursts of star formation in the nuclei 1--2 Gyr
ago. The only galaxy, in which the ages of stellar population in the nucleus
and in the bulge coincide (i.e. the nuclear burst of star formation did not
take place) is NGC 502, the farthest from the center of the group of all the

Nonperturbative and perturbative treatments of parametric heating in atom traps
We study the quantum description of parametric heating in harmonic potentials
both nonperturbatively and perturbatively, having in mind atom traps. The first
approach establishes an explicit connection between classical and quantum
descriptions; it also gives analytic expressions for properties such as the
width of fractional frequency parametric resonances. The second approach gives
an alternative insight into the problem and can be directly extended to take
into account nonlinear effects. This is specially important for shallow traps.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
OB Stars in the Solar Neighborhood I: Analysis of their Spatial Distribution
We present a newly-developed, three-dimensional spatial classification
method, designed to analyze the spatial distribution of early type stars within
the 1 kpc sphere around the Sun. We propose a distribution model formed by two
intersecting disks -the Gould Belt (GB) and the Local Galactic Disk (LGD)-
defined by their fundamental geometric parameters. Then, using a sample of
about 550 stars of spectral types earlier than B6 and luminosity classes
between III and V, with precise photometric distances of less than 1 kpc, we
estimate for some spectral groups the parameters of our model, as well as
single membership probabilities of GB and LGD stars, thus drawing a picture of
the spatial distribution of young stars in the vicinity of the Sun.Comment: 28 pages including 9 Postscript figures, one of them in color.
