    Parastatistics of charged bosons partly localised by impurities

    Coulomb repulsion is taken into account to derive the thermodynamics of charged bosons in a random external potential. A simple analytical form of the partition function is proposed for the case of non-overlapping localised states (i.e. a small amount of disorder). The density of localised bosons and the specific heat show a peculiar non-uniform temperature dependence below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature. The superfluid - Bose-glass phase diagram is discussed.     Program for computing partial pressures from residual gas analyzer data

The analysis of the ion currents of 18 m/e spectrometer peaks allows the determination of 12 gases simultaneously.     A Deep Relevance Matching Model for Ad-hoc Retrieval

    In recent years, deep neural networks have led to exciting breakthroughs in speech recognition, computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, there have been few positive results of deep models on ad-hoc retrieval tasks. This is partially due to the fact that many important characteristics of the ad-hoc retrieval task have not been well addressed in deep models yet. Typically, the ad-hoc retrieval task is formalized as a matching problem between two pieces of text in existing work using deep models, and treated equivalent to many NLP tasks such as paraphrase identification, question answering and automatic conversation. However, we argue that the ad-hoc retrieval task is mainly about relevance matching while most NLP matching tasks concern semantic matching, and there are some fundamental differences between these two matching tasks. Successful relevance matching requires proper handling of the exact matching signals, query term importance, and diverse matching requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel deep relevance matching model (DRMM) for ad-hoc retrieval. Specifically, our model employs a joint deep architecture at the query term level for relevance matching. By using matching histogram mapping, a feed forward matching network, and a term gating network, we can effectively deal with the three relevance matching factors mentioned above. Experimental results on two representative benchmark collections show that our model can significantly outperform some well-known retrieval models as well as state-of-the-art deep matching models.Comment: CIKM 2016, long pape

    Understanding Fall-Risk Factors for Inuvialuit Elders in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada

    Older Indigenous adults in Canada experience disproportionately poorer health outcomes than older non-Indigenous adults. Current fall-prevention literature suggests that older Indigenous adults have higher rates of falls and fall-related injuries; however, no information exists on older Inuit adults’ experience with falls. Using the social determinants of Inuit health (SDoIH) as a conceptual framework, this research sought to understand which of the SDoIH are believed by stakeholders (i.e., local fall prevention programmers [LFPPs] and Inuvialuit Elders) to affect most the likelihood of older Inuvialuit adults’ falls. The findings from the 12 semi-structured interviews and participant observations show that factors related to personal health status and conditions, personal health practices and coping skills, physical environments, social support networks, and access to health services increase older Inuvialuit adults’ likelihood of experiencing a fall. Some determinants, however, decrease their likelihood of experiencing falls (health practices, coping skills, and access to health services), and others, such as culture, were perceived as having little influence on falls. Specific cultural practices were identified as factors that influence the likelihood of older Inuvialuit adults experiencing a fall; however, the overall Inuvialuit culture was not. In light of these findings, we offer recommendations for LFPPs in Inuvik to implement fall-prevention programs that adequately address the SDoIH influencing older Inuvialuit adults’ fall risk and rates.Au Canada, les Autochtones âgés ont un état de santé excessivement moins bon que les non-Autochtones âgés. Selon la documentation actuelle sur la prévention des chutes, les Autochtones âgés ont des taux plus élevés de chutes et de blessures découlant de chutes. Cependant, il n’existe pas d’information au sujet des chutes chez les Inuits âgés. Cette recherche, ayant comme cadre conceptuel les déterminants sociaux de la santé des Inuits (DSSI), a cherché à comprendre les DSSI (comme les programmeurs locaux de prévention des chutes et les aînés inuvialuits) qui, selon les parties prenantes, sont les plus susceptibles d’avoir une incidence sur les chutes d’Inuvialuits âgés. D’après les constatations émanant des12 entretiens semi-structurés et les observations des participants, les facteurs liés à l’état de santé et aux conditions personnelles, les pratiques personnelles en matière de santé, la capacité d’adaptation, le milieu physique, les réseaux de soutien social et l’accès aux services de santé ont une incidence sur les possibilités de chutes chez les Inuvialuits âgés. Cependant, certains déterminants diminuent leurs possibilités de chutes (les pratiques personnelles en matière de santé, la capacité d’adaptation et l’accès aux services de santé), tandis que d’autres facteurs, comme la culture, ont peu d’influence apparente sur les chutes. Certaines pratiques culturelles constituent des facteurs qui influencent les possibilités de chutes chez les Inuvialuits âgés, mais dans son ensemble, la culture inuvialuite n’est pas un facteur. À la lumière de ces constatations, nous présentons des recommandations aux programmeurs locaux de prévention des chutes d’Inuvik en vue de la mise en oeuvre de programmes de prévention des chutes qui auraient une incidence réelle sur les DSSI influençant les risques et les taux de chutes chez les Inuvialuits âgés

    Rapid evolution of our understanding of the pathogenesis of COVID-19: Implications for therapy

    COVID-19 severity appears to lie in its propensity to cause a hyperinflammatory response, attributed to the cytokine release syndrome (CRS) or ‘cytokine storm’, although the exact role of the CRS remains to be fully elucidated. Hyperinflammation triggers a hypercoagulable state, also thought to play a key role in COVID-19 pathogenesis. Disease severity is linked to age, sex and comorbid conditions, which in turn may be linked to oxidative stress and pre-existing depletion of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). There is increasing evidence that the host genome may determine disease outcome. Since most information pertaining to COVID-19 has thus far been extrapolated from the ‘global North’, similar studies in African populations are warranted. Many studies are aimed at finding a therapeutic strategy based on scientific rationale. Some promising results have emerged, e.g. the use of corticosteroids in severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

    Black and minority ethnic group involvement in health and social care research: a systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Patient and public involvement (PPI) in research is growing internationally, but little is known about black and minority ethnic (BME) involvement and the factors influencing their involvement in health and social care research. OBJECTIVES: To characterize and critique the empirical literature on BME-PPI involvement in health and social care research. SEARCH STRATEGY: Systematic searches of six electronic bibliographic databases were undertaken, utilizing both MeSH and free-text terms to identify international empirical literature published between 1990 and 2016. INCLUSION CRITERIA: All study designs that report primary data that involved BME groups in health or social care research. Screening was conducted by two reviewers. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Data extraction and quality appraisal were performed independently. Data extraction focused on the level(s) of PPI involvement and where PPI activity occurred in the research cycle. Studies were quality-assessed using the guidelines for measuring the quality and impact of user involvement in research. Data were analysed using a narrative approach. MAIN RESULTS: Forty-five studies were included with the majority undertaken in the USA focusing on African Americans and indigenous populations. Involvement most commonly occurred during the research design phase and least in data analysis and interpretation. CONCLUSION: This is the first systematic review investigating BME involvement in health and social care research internationally. While there is a widespread support for BME involvement, this is limited to particular phases of the research and particular ethnic subgroups. There is a need to understand factors that influence BME involvement in all parts of the research cycle

    Magnetic properties of GdT2T_2Zn20_{20} (T = Fe, Co) investigated by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy

    We investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the GdT2T_2Zn20_{20} (TT = Fe and Co) compounds using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRMS measurements reveal that the GdCo2_2Zn20_{20} compound has a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin structure with a magnetic propagation vector τ⃗\vec{\tau} = (12,12,12)(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}) below the N\'eel temperature (TN∼T_N \sim 5.7 K). Only the Gd ions carry a magnetic moment forming an antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic representation Γ6\Gamma_6. For the ferromagnetic GdFe2_2Zn20_{20} compound, an extensive investigation was performed at low temperature and under magnetic field using XANES and XMCD techniques. A strong XMCD signal of about 12.5 %\% and 9.7 %\% is observed below the Curie temperature (TC∼T_C \sim 85 K) at the Gd-L2L_2 and L3L_3 edges, respectively. In addition, a small magnetic signal of about 0.06 %\% of the jump is recorded at the Zn KK-edge suggesting that the Zn 4pp states are spin polarized by the Gd 5dd extended orbitals

Different ways of writing the field theory Hamiltonian translate to different ways of reparametrizing the world-sheet sigma coordinate. Adding a mass term in the field theory corresponds to cutting off the warped AdS direction, with cut-off inversely proportional to the mass.
