    Document Archiving, Replication and Migration Container for Mobile Web Users

    With the increasing use of mobile workstations for a wide variety of tasks and associated information needs, and with many variations of available networks, access to data becomes a prime consideration. This paper discusses issues of workstation mobility and proposes a solution wherein the data structures are accessed in an encapsulated form - through the Portable File System (PFS) wrapper. The paper discusses an implementation of the Portable File System, highlighting the architecture and commenting upon performance of an experimental system. Although investigations have been focused upon mobile access of WWW documents, this technique could be applied to any mobile data access situation.Comment: 5 page

    Applicability of the Peclet number approach to blow-off and flashback limits of common steelworks process gases

    The ever-increasing importance of energy efficiency has given rise to numerous areas of concern for operators and developers of combustion plants; as the need to utilise fuel gases of increasingly poor quality and variability is essential for sustainability, while emission standards continuing to become more stringent. Swirl combustors are ubiquitous in industry owing to their great stability range which occurs due to the formation of a CRZ, which through the recycling of heat and active chemical species to the root of the flame enhances stability over a wide range of operating conditions. Alternative fuels containing hydrogen offer the possibility of reduced greenhouse gas emissions; however flashback is of special concern with hydrogen enriched fuels, owing to the very high flame speed of hydrogen. Many by-products of process and waste industries can include a high proportion of hydrogen, for example Coke Oven Gas. Alternatively, many by-product process gases can contain a high proportion of non-combustible species such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide which can substantially reduce their flame speed and as a consequence increase the possibility of the flame extinguishing through blow-off. This paper examines the blow-off and flashback potential of common steelworks process gases (including one which contains hydrogen) in a compact, premixed swirl burner in swirl number regimes representative of those found in practical systems. Methane is used as a base fuel for comparison. All results are obtained at atmospheric pressure without air preheat. The Peclet number modelling approach incorporating a flame quenching parameter was applied to the results obtained for each of the fuel gases. Using this model, the quench factor value was seen to be dependent on burner configuration as well as fuel composition. It was found that the stable burner operating conditions significantly change from fuel to fuel; with the operating points at which flashback occurs with Coke Oven Gas producing blow-off with weaker process gases such as Blast Furnace Gas and Basic Oxygen Steelmaking gas

    Non-covalent Functionalization of Graphene to Tune Its Band Gap and Stabilize Metal Nanoparticles on Its Surface

With this focus, this paper shows the effect of the non-covalent bonding of a pyrimidine derivative (HIS) on the electronic properties of graphene (G). Several G-HIS hybrids are prepared through mild treatments keeping unaltered the structures of both G and HIS. The attachment of HIS to G occurs by π−π stacking of the HIS-aromatic residue with the G surface. This partially blocks the pz electrons of G, giving rise to the splitting of both the valence and conduction bands. Moreover, the width of the splitting is directly related to the HIS content. This fact allows the fine-tuning of the band gap of G-HIS hybrids. Furthermore, HIS keeps its metal-complexing ability in the G-HIS hybrids. Taking advantage of this, a G-HIS−Cu(0) composite was prepared by H2 plasma reduction of a precursor of the G-HIS−Cu(II) type. GHIS− Cu(0) contains Cu(0) clusters stabilized on the G surface due to interactions with the COO− functions of HIS. In an analogous hybrid, G-HIS−Au(0), the Au(0) NPs are also stabilized by COO− functions.     Radiation reaction on charged particles in three-dimensional motion in classical and quantum electrodynamics

    We extend our previous work (see arXiv:quant-ph/0501026), which compared the predictions of quantum electrodynamics concerning radiation reaction with those of the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac theory for a charged particle in linear motion. Specifically, we calculate the predictions for the change in position of a charged scalar particle, moving in three-dimensional space, due to the effect of radiation reaction in the one-photon-emission process in quantum electrodynamics. The scalar particle is assumed to be accelerated for a finite period of time by a three-dimensional electromagnetic potential dependent only on one of the spacetime coordinates. We perform this calculation in the 0\hbar\to 0 limit and show that the change in position agrees with that obtained in classical electrodynamics with the Lorentz-Dirac force treated as a perturbation. We also show for a time-dependent but space-independent electromagnetic potential that the forward-scattering amplitude at order e2e^2 does not contribute to the position change in the 0\hbar \to 0 limit after the mass renormalization is taken into account.Comment: Latex, 20page

    Vacancy clustering and diffusion in silicon: Kinetic lattice Monte Carlo simulations

    Diffusion and clustering of lattice vacancies in silicon as a function of temperature, concentration, and interaction range are investigated by Kinetic Lattice Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that higher temperatures lead to larger clusters with shorter lifetimes on average, which grow by attracting free vacancies, while clusters at lower temperatures grow by aggregation of smaller clusters. Long interaction ranges produce enhanced diffusivity and fewer clusters. Greater vacancy concentrations lead to more clusters, with fewer free vacancies, but the size of the clusters is largely independent of concentration. Vacancy diffusivity is shown to obey power law behavior over time, and the exponent of this law is shown to increase with concentration, at fixed temperature, and decrease with temperature, at fixed concentration.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures.     Assessing the seasonal prevalence and risk factors for nuchal crest adiposity in domestic horses and ponies using the Cresty Neck Score

    BACKGROUND: Nuchal crest adiposity in horses and ponies has been associated with an enhanced risk of metabolic health problems. However, there is no current information on the prevalence of, and risk factors specific to, nuchal crest adiposity in horses and ponies. In addition, the cresty neck score has not previously been utilised across different seasons within a UK leisure population, it is not know whether nuchal crest adiposity shows the same seasonal trends as general obesity. RESULTS: A Cresty Neck Score (CNS, 0–5) was given to 96 horses with access to pasture (>6 h per day) at the end of winter and at the end of summer in order to obtain two prevalence estimates. Risk factors were assessed using the single outcome cresty neck/no cresty neck in either season (binary), from owner questionnaires and analysed using a mixed effects logistic regression model (outcome variable CNS <3 or CNS ≥3/5). Agreement between winter and summer scores was assessed using weighted Kappa methods. Winter CNS values were significantly higher than summer CNS values (p = 0.002) indicating a systematic bias. The prevalence of a CNS ≥ 3/5 was 45.83% at the end of winter, falling to 33.33% at the end of summer and was higher in ponies (<14.2 hh) than horses (≥14.2 hh) in both seasons. This may reflect a real winter increase in regional fat deposition, or an increased difficulty in obtaining an accurate estimate of regional adiposity in winter months. Breed was the strongest risk factor for CNS ≥3/5 in both seasons, with native UK breeds appearing to be most at risk (p < 0.001). In a separate, small validation study, the CNS showed good inter-observer reliability. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of a CNS ≥3/5 was higher at the end of winter than at the end of summer, which was the opposite pattern seasonal variation to that observed for general obesity. Further studies are required to investigate the potential influence of time of year upon CNS interpretation and studies utilising the CNS should consider potential seasonal variability in nuchal crest adiposity.     Chandra Measurements of a Complete Sample of X-ray Luminous Galaxy Clusters: The Luminosity-Mass Relation

    We present the results of work involving a statistically complete sample of 34 galaxy clusters, in the redshift range 0.15\lez\le0.3 observed with ChandraChandra. We investigate the luminosity-mass (LMLM) relation for the cluster sample, with the masses obtained via a full hydrostatic mass analysis. We utilise a method to fully account for selection biases when modeling the LMLM relation, and find that the LMLM relation is significantly different than the relation modelled when not account for selection effects. We find that the luminosity of our clusters is 2.2±\pm0.4 times higher (when accounting for selection effects) than the average for a given mass, its mass is 30% lower than the population average for a given luminosity. Equivalently, using the LMLM relation measured from this sample without correcting for selection biases would lead to the underestimation by 40% of the average mass of a cluster with a given luminosity. Comparing the hydrostatic masses to mass estimates determined from the YXY_{X} parameter, we find that they are entirely consistent, irrespective of the dynamical state of the cluster.Comment: 31 pages, 43 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Focus groups were used to initiate collaborative relationships with wheat producers while learning about their farming history and decision-making. Focus group transcripts illustrate that producers were less confident in evaluating insect management problems compared to weed management. Producers do rely on Cooperative Extension in managing insect problems. Extension educators continue to play an important role in increasing producer\u27s knowledge of simplified field scouting and insect identification technology
