Esta sencilla pero novedosa revisión podrá brindar información adicional a la literatura que se encuentra disponible respecto a este fruto, el cual contiene fitoquímicos con bioactividad/ ABSTRACT Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) is a fruit from Africa with a worldwide production between 400 and 500 thousand ton, with 39 000 ton produced in Mexico; traditionally it is recognized for its antioxidant properties, possibly related to the presence of bioactive compounds, mainly polyphenols. Tamarind fruit has been given different applications from medicinal as well as an ingredient in the food industry. The present review aims to collect and display some of the recent studies of the beneficial effects that have been reported for the pulp of this fruit. However, in recent times there has been enough evidence which show that some polyphenols ingested with the daily diet may be associated with dietary fiber, so in this review the quantification of polyphenols and antioxidant activity in the fruit pulp was included in addition to the quantification of the phenolic compounds that are potentially associated with dietary fiber of the fruit. This evaluation was performed by in vitro methods. This simple but novel information may provide additional information to the literature that is available around the fruit, which contains phytochemicals with bioactivity

Currently in Colombia, the programs developed to facilitate citizens appropriation of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) concentrate efforts on to increasing and to improving the ICT infrastructure (hardware-software). This tendency might be observed in the results presented by the government about ICT politics which register the number of given computers, the increase on information transmission/reception speed or the number of Internet connections enabled in the country, among others. However, the access to the Information Society, the knowledge construction and the development of cognitive processes result to be non reachable complex phases with just having more technology. This work proposes the consideration of variables linked to the cultural environment of the regions and the knowledge of its relationships, with the purpose of having a key factor to predict the technological acceptance and its impact in the culture of the inhabitants. If the multidimensional complex culture is not considered to implement the ICT in the society, the digital gap will increasingly be bigger and it will increase the inequality in the education and in the use of the technological resources giving at the end a bigger social inequity and poverty

Nitrogen determination on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) seedlings by color image analysis (RGB)

In order to investigate the effectiveness of a new method based on color image analysis and the Minolta SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter for the diagnosis of nitrogen deficiencies of tomato seedlings, a field experiment was conducted. In this study, five levels of nitrogen fertilization were established so as to induce nitrogen deficiencies in tomato seedlings. Thirty-five days after sowing, total nitrogen was evaluated by laboratory analysis. The chlorophyll index was determined using a SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter. Also, color images were taken with a digital camera; the color images were processed in MATLAB in order to determine the averages of the red color, green color and the blue color. The relationships between variables were analyzed by linear regressions and a one way analysis of variance (p < 0.01). Results showed that color image analysis correlated better with the status of plant nitrogen than the SPAD. From the color image analysis, the red and blue colors were more accurate predictors of nitrogen status on plants with R2 above 0.89. Color image analysis provides an accurate and quick way for nitrogen estimation and can contribute for early detection of nitrogen deficiency in tomato seedlings. The SPAD method is not a reliable way to estimate the nitrogen status on tomato seedlings. Keywords: Color image analysis (RGB), chlorophyll meter, nitrogen deficiencyAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 9(33), pp. 5326-5332, 16 August, 201

Culture is understood as a multidimensional construct which includes facets of artistic and spiritual expressions and intellectual and emotional values as well. The interpretation of culture has been an important factor in recent years to understand the relationships and the phenomena of social issues. This interpretation requires a model which implies the dimensions that make up the culture in order to facilitate their quantitative study and to support the popular qualitative descriptions. It is necessary to consider also the recognition of the remarkable influence of the information in the globalized society and the rapid advancement of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the increasing dependence of humanity on it. This work presents a recount of some of the models used for culture quantification, with the aim of giving support to an electronic government's architecture (Government to Citizens relationship), based on culture creation and refinement processes by means of the derived citizens behavior from technological acceptance approaches.

Large trees drive forest aboveground biomass variation in moist lowland forests across the tropics, Global

ABSTRACT Aim Large trees (d.b.h. Ն 70 cm) store large amounts of biomass. Several studies suggest that large trees may be vulnerable to changing climate, potentially leading to declining forest biomass storage. Here we determine the importance of large trees for tropical forest biomass storage and explore which intrinsic (species trait) and extrinsic (environment) variables are associated with the density of large trees and forest biomass at continental and pan-tropical scales. Location Pan-tropical. Methods Aboveground biomass (AGB) was calculated for 120 intact lowland moist forest locations. Linear regression was used to calculate variation in AGB explained by the density of large trees. Akaike information criterion weights (AICcwi) were used to calculate averaged correlation coefficients for all possible multiple regression models between AGB/density of large trees and environmental and species trait variables correcting for spatial autocorrelation. Results Density of large trees explained c. 70% of the variation in pan-tropical AGB and was also responsible for significantly lower AGB in Neotropical [287.8 (mean) Ϯ 105.0 (SD) Mg ha ). Pan-tropical variation in density of large trees and AGB was associated with soil coarseness (negative), soil fertility (positive), community wood density (positive) and dominance of wind dispersed species (positive), temperature in the coldest month (negative), temperature in the warmest month (negative) and rainfall in the wettest month (positive), but results were not always consistent among continents. Main conclusions Density of large trees and AGB were significantly associated with climatic variables, indicating that climate change will affect tropical forest biomass storage. Species trait composition will interact with these future biomass changes as they are also affected by a warmer climate. Given the importance of large trees for variation in AGB across the tropics, and their sensitivity to climate change, we emphasize the need for in-depth analyses of the community dynamics of large trees. bs_bs_banner Global Ecology and Biogeography, (Global Ecol.
