In this paper we analyze the altitudinal use of the environment in the traditional agricultural practices of an Andean rural community of Salta Province, Argentina. At present, families that used to move periodically among different settlements are gradually turning to be sedentary. This process has resulted in the weakening of the vertical use of the environment, the concentration of agricultural activities into a sole altitudinal level, the loss of some cultigens proper of abandoned areas and in the increase in the pressure of use in permanent locations. Even though ancestral agricultural practices are still in use in the community under study, changes are negatively influencing their preservation. Fil: Hilgert, Norma Ines. Where to locate? A project-based learning activity for a graduate-level course on operations management

Location decisions represent an integral part of the strategic planning process of firms. Because these decisions do have a significant impact on the organisation, location analysis is a recurrent topic in operations management courses. In this study we posit that students enrolled in such courses should experience in an active way location decisions. To this end, this paper proposes an activity that, by adopting a student-centred approach, allows students getting involved in location decisions (technical skill) while simultaneously helps them boosting some of the soft skills that operation managers should possess (teamwork and use of new technologies). By mimicking a real life situation, students are asked to decide where to locate a specific new public service in the city of Barcelona. This activity was part of a course on Operations Management, included in the Master’s Degree in Engineering Management and Production Systems taught at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain).Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Improving business plan development and entrepreneurial skills through a project-based activity

    Get PDF
The present study reports the experience of a project-based activity similar to the ones developed by the Small Business Institute (SBI) program in which students are asked to plan an event. It is part of a Project Management course taught at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, in an Undergraduate course in Business Administration. The activity has been designed in such a way that it is expected to help students develop technical and entrepreneurial skills as it requires the use of critical thinking, quantitative methods and tools to interpret data for decision-making. The results show that active learning materialized in the form of project-based activities make courses more enjoyable for both instructors and students, and most importantly, contribute to develop students’ skills such as teamwork and critical thinking. However, while it is useful for students to gain some exposure to the material through pre-class readings and overview lectures, students do not fully understand and realize about their importance until they actively take part and reflect on the meaning of what they are learning.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Differential in vitro and in vivo effect of barley cysteine and serine protease inhibitors on phytopathogenic microorganisms

Protease inhibitors from plants have been involved in defence mechanisms against pests and pathogens. Phytocystatins and trypsin/α-amylase inhibitors are two of the best characterized protease inhibitor families in plants. In barley, thirteen cystatins (HvCPI-1 to 13) and the BTI-CMe trypsin inhibitor have been previously studied. Their capacity to inhibit pest digestive proteases, and the negative in vivo effect caused by plants expressing these inhibitors on pests support the defence function of these proteins. Barley cystatins are also able to inhibit in vitro fungal growth. However, the antifungal effect of these inhibitors in vivo had not been previously tested. Moreover, their in vitro and in vivo effect on plant pathogenous bacteria is still unknown. In order to obtain new insights on this feature, in vitro assays were made against different bacterial and fungal pathogens of plants using the trypsin inhibitor BTI-CMe and the thirteen barley cystatins. Most barley cystatins and the BTI-CMe inhibitor were able to inhibit mycelial growth but no bacterial growth. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants independently expressing the BTI-CMe inhibitor and the cystatin HvCPI-6 were tested against the same bacterial and fungal pathogens. Neither the HvCPI-6 expressing transgenic plants nor the BTI-CMe ones were more resistant to plant pathogen fungi and bacteria than control Arabidopsis plants. The differences observed between the in vitro and in planta assays against phytopathogenic fungi are discusse
