Where to locate? A project-based learning activity for a graduate-level course on operations management

Location decisions represent an integral part of the strategic planning process of firms. Because these decisions do have a significant impact on the organisation, location analysis is a recurrent topic in operations management courses. In this study we posit that students enrolled in such courses should experience in an active way location decisions. To this end, this paper proposes an activity that, by adopting a student-centred approach, allows students getting involved in location decisions (technical skill) while simultaneously helps them boosting some of the soft skills that operation managers should possess (teamwork and use of new technologies). By mimicking a real life situation, students are asked to decide where to locate a specific new public service in the city of Barcelona. Improving business plan development and entrepreneurial skills through a project-based activity

The present study reports the experience of a project-based activity similar to the ones developed by the Small Business Institute (SBI) program in which students are asked to plan an event. It is part of a Project Management course taught at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, in an Undergraduate course in Business Administration. The activity has been designed in such a way that it is expected to help students develop technical and entrepreneurial skills as it requires the use of critical thinking, quantitative methods and tools to interpret data for decision-making. The results show that active learning materialized in the form of project-based activities make courses more enjoyable for both instructors and students, and most importantly, contribute to develop students’ skills such as teamwork and critical thinking. However, while it is useful for students to gain some exposure to the material through pre-class readings and overview lectures, students do not fully understand and realize about their importance until they actively take part and reflect on the meaning of what they are learning.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Is collaborative management always possible? The case of Sauce Grande River Basin, Argentina

The continuous interaction between human activities and environment leads to adopting a broad approach for studying watershed systems. Undoubtedly, designing an efficient but also sustainable river-basin management plan requires considering the ecosystem, the economic and social aspects related to the use of natural resources. Given the practical and theoretical relevance that stakeholders’ participation has achieved in the frame of new approaches for watershed management, this paper aims to identify the possibility of implementing a collaborative strategy in the particular case of the Sauce Grande River Basin (SGRB), Argentina. Such implementation requires the fulfilment of some key conditions that heighten or hinder their execution. Our results indicate that, although the complexity of the basin makes necessary the implementation of a collaborative plan, it is not plausible in the short term. Some issues, such as the engagement of all stakeholders (inside and outside the basin), and the simplification and coordination of the norms and levels of decision making, should be taken into account for implementing a collaborative management in the basin. Otherwise, the implementation could have a non-expected result on the socio-ecological system, generating an immediate reject to more participative strategies.Fil: Zilio, Mariana Ines. Mass Media, gender and crime: wefts and senses about violence against women

El artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación colectiva que tuvo como propósito analizar, desde una mirada crítica y de género/feminista, narrativas periodísticas, discursos y sentidos en disputa expresados por medios gráficos de la provincia de Mendoza, Argentina, sobre distintas problemáticas de género como la violencia contra las mujeres. Entre otros hallazgos, a través del análisis cuanti-cualitativo de las construcciones noticiosas, el trabajo revela de qué manera la agenda de los temas de género ha quedado subsumida a la problemática de la violencia de género/femicidios tratada desde el punto de vista policial. La espectacularización a través de diferentes herramientas como la personalización, la descontextualización y la dramatización, se ha convertido en un mecanismo recurrente en la construcción de tales informaciones.The article presents the results of a collective research that had the purpose of analyzing, from a critical and gender / feminist perspective, journalistic narratives, discourses and senses in dispute expressed by graphic media of the province of Mendoza, Argentina, on different topics of gender such as violence against women. Among other findings, through the quantitative-qualitative analysis of news constructions, the paper reveals how the agenda of gender topics has been subsumed to the problem of gender violence / femicide treated from the police point of view. Delphi consensus recommendations on how to provide cardiovascular rehabilitation in the COVID-19 era

For permissions, please email: [email protected] Delphi consensus by 28 experts from the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) provides initial recommendations on how cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) facilities should modulate their activities in view of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. A total number of 150 statements were selected and graded by Likert scale [from -5 (strongly disagree) to +5 (strongly agree)], starting from six open-ended questions on (i) referral criteria, (ii) optimal timing and setting, (iii) core components, (iv) structure-based metrics, (v) process-based metrics, and (vi) quality indicators. Consensus was reached on 58 (39%) statements, 48 'for' and 10 'against' respectively, mainly in the field of referral, core components, and structure of CR activities, in a comprehensive way suitable for managing cardiac COVID-19 patients. Panelists oriented consensus towards maintaining usual activities on traditional patient groups referred to CR, without significant downgrading of intervention in case of COVID-19 as a comorbidity. Moreover, it has been suggested to consider COVID-19 patients as a referral group to CR per se when the viral disease is complicated by acute cardiovascular (CV) events; in these patients, the potential development of COVID-related CV sequelae, as well as of pulmonary arterial hypertension, needs to be focused.
