    Multiple length/time-scale simulation of localized damage in composite structures using a Mesh Superposition Technique

    A Mesh Superposition Technique (MST) for the progressive transition between differently-discretized subdomains is proposed and implemented in an FE code. The interfaces between these subdomains are replaced by transition regions where the corresponding meshes are superposed. The MST is applied to the multiple length/time-scale analysis of a low-velocity impact of a projectile on a composite plate. Unlike using a sudden discretization-transition approach, the use of the MST eliminates the undesirable stress disturbances at the interface between differently-discretized subdomains and, as a result, it correctly captures the impact-induced damage pattern at a lower computational cost. Finally, the MST is coupled with an implicit/explicit co-simulation technique for a multiple time/length-scale analysis. The results indicate that, if the length-scale transition is performed using the proposed MST instead of a sudden discretization-transition, the CPU time can be nearly halved

    In this paper results obtained from monotonic nonlinear static analyses performed on Re-inforced Concrete (RC) internal beam-column sub-assembly are shown. Bond-slip phenome-non between steel longitudinal bars and surrounding concrete is also taken into account in order to predict the numerical response under lateral actions of the RC internal beam-column sub-assembly investigated. The study is addressed, through parametric models and Monte Carlo simulations, to pro-pose preliminary fragility curves for different damage states of the RC internal beam-column sub-assembly, including materials inherent uncertainties

    Typological seismic losses assessment by damaged masonry buildings after L’Aquila 2009 and Emilia 2012 earthquakes

    In this paper a seismic risk analysis of masonry buildings based on damage data from the 2009 L'Aquila and 2012 Emilia earthquakes. The seismic vulnerability is described by fragility curves from which economic loss curves are derived for each representative typological class of masonry buildings. The information on the buildings was collected by the Italian Civil Protection Department with the AeDES form and available in the Observed Damage Database (D.a.D.O.). The reliability of the database considered, however, was improved by carrying out a process of estimating undamaged buildings from data from the 15th ISTAT census. Finally, for each damage level, according to EMS-98 scale, a procedure to derive the Expected Annual Loss is presented, so as to express its percentage contribution in the seismic risk assessment

    Earthquakes in the recent past continue to provide more and more information on the seismic behavior of existing buildings and on the related economic losses. For the reason it is interesting to compare the damage of buildings stocks archived after earthquakes survey activities. In this paper a study of the damage occurred on masonry buildings after L’Aquila 2009 and Emilia 2012 earthquakes is carried out, by considering the data available in the web-gis Da.D.O platform. Firstly, fragility curves are illustrated and compared by considering the vulnerability classes of Da.D.O. (Class A, Class B and Class C1). Then, an approach is proposed in order to evaluate the total Expected Annual Loss (EALtot) and its contributions due to the several damage level (D1, …, D5). The preliminary obtained results show that, with reference to the two masonry buildings stocks considered, the higher contribution to the (EALtot) is given by the damage level D3, that may be considered as the life safety limit state. In the case analyzed, the corresponding EALD3 results almost equal to 1/3 of EALtot

    The sustainable reuse of compost from a new type of olive mill pomace in replacing peat for potted olive tree

    The attention for the replacement of peat in growing substrates is increasing due to its environmental and economic advantages. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the impact of peat substitution by new type olive mill pomace and its compost on the vegetative activity of potted olive trees. A new type of humid pomace (hP) derived from an innovative two phase extraction system and its derived compost (C-hP) are used as total or partial (50% vol/vol) replacement of peat in olive growing substrate. The main chemical characteristics (moisture, water extractable organic carbon, total nitrogen, C/N ratio and electrical conductivity) of the hP and C-hP were measured. In order to evaluate the effects of the peat substitution on the plants vegetative activity, measurements of mortality, plant height, leaf net photosynthesis and plant growth (through final destructive measurements) were carried out. The use of hP resulted in a significant increase of the salinity of the substrate. The water extractable organic carbon concentration was higher in all substrates where peat was ewplaced and in particular when C-hP was used. The total replacement of peat with hP caused 100% mortality of the plants while C-hP can substitute peat up to 50% without causing a significative reduction of the final plant growth

    A non-linear static approach for the prediction of earthquake-induced deformation of geotechnical systems

    This paper illustrates an original and simple method to predict earthquake-induced deformations of geotechnical systems. The method is an extension of static non-linear analysis, and is conceived to predict the behaviour of geotechnical systems, like supported and unsupported excavations, that during the seismic motion accumulate displacements in a single direction. The seismic capacity of the system is described by its capacity curve, obtained either from a numerical push-over analysis or through a simplified procedure. The corresponding seismic demand is described by a combination of the elastic response spectrum, including basic information on the maximum amplitudes of the seismic motion, and a cyclic demand spectrum, that provides additional information about the equivalent number of cycles that contribute to the accumulation of displacements. In the paper, the method is described in detail and is validated through different procedures, namely: comparisons with experimental results obtained in the geotechnical centrifuge; comparison with results of advanced numerical analyses; extensive comparison, using a large database of seismic records, with the results of non-linear time-domain analyses. In its final part, the paper provides guidance for the practical use of the method for design

    Immunity, Inflammation and Heart Failure: Their Role on Cardiac Function and Iron Status

    Aims: Heart failure is a clinical syndrome characterized by subclinical systemic inflammation and immune system activation associated with iron deficiency. No data exist on the various activations of immune-mediated mechanisms of inflammation in heart failure patients with reduced/preserved ejection fraction. We aimed to (1) investigate possible differences in inflammatory parameters and oxidative stress, and (2) detect a different iron status between groups. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 50 consecutive Caucasian outpatients with heart failure. All patients underwent echocardiographic measurements, laboratory determinations, evaluation of iron status and Toll-like receptors, and NF-κB expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines. All statistical calculations were made using SPSS for Mac version 21.0. Results: Patients with reduced ejection fraction showed significantly lower hemoglobin levels (12.3 ± 1.4 vs. 13.6 ± 1.4 g/dl), serum iron (61.4 ± 18.3 vs. 93.7 ± 33.7 mcg/dl), transferrin iron binding capacity (20.7 ± 8.4 vs. 31.1 ± 15.6 %), and e-GFR values (78.1 ± 36.1 vs. 118.1 ± 33.9 ml/min/1.73 m2) in comparison to patients with preserved ejection fraction, while unsaturated iron binding capacity (272.6 ± 74.9 vs. 221.7 ± 61.4 mcg/dl), hepcidin (4.61 ± 0.89 vs. 3.28 ± 0.69 ng/ml), and creatinine (1.34 ± 0.55 vs. 1.03 ± 0.25 mg/dl) were significantly higher in the same group. When considering inflammatory parameters, patients with reduced ejection fraction showed significantly higher expression of both Toll-like receptors-2 (1.90 ± 0.97 vs. 1.25 ± 0.76 MFI) and Toll-like receptors-4 (4.54 ± 1.32 vs. 3.38 ± 1.62 MFI), respectively, as well as a significantly higher activity of NF-κB (2.67 ± 0.60 vs. 1.07 ± 0.30). Furthermore, pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-1, and interleukin-6, was significantly higher in patients with reduced ejection fraction, while the protective cytokine interleukin-10 was significantly lower in the same group. Correlational analyses demonstrated a significant and inverse relationship between left ventricular function and inflammatory parameters in patients with reduced ejection fraction, as well as a direct correlation between ferritin and inflammatory parameters. Conclusions: Our data demonstrate a different immune-mediated inflammatory burden in heart failure patients with reduced or preserved ejection fraction, as well as significant differences in iron status. These data contribute to further elucidate pathophysiologic mechanisms leading to cardiac dysfunction

    Design and Fabrication of Forged Ti-6Al-4V Blocks with Synthetic Ti-N Inclusions for Estimation of Detectability by Ultrasonic Signal-To-Noise

    In the work described subsequently, synthetic “hard alpha” inclusions have been fabricated within Ti-6A1-4V (Ti64) forgings. Several compositions of synthetic hard alpha were made by arc melting Ti sponge and TiN powder. Small solid cylinders of the titanium-nitrogen alloys were made by electro-discharge machining (e. d. m.) the arc-melted ingots to diameters of 0.031, 0.047, 0.062, and 0.078 inches, respectively, with heights equal to the respective diameter. Sets of eight or sixteen each identical cylinders were hot isostatic press (HIP) bonded within forged Ti64 blocks to yield uncracked inclusions with sharp interfaces with the Ti64 matrix. Detectability of the uncracked hard alpha was estimated as a function of flaw size, orientation, and nitrogen content from ultrasonic signal to noise ratios determined from C-Scan images of the blocks. Relationships of detectability to physical properties of hard alpha, and methodologies of signal to noise determinations are discussed

    Medical imaging in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis: a review

    Schistosomiasis is one of the most important parasitic diseases and it is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas. Clinical and laboratory data are fundamental for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis, but diagnostic imaging techniques such as x-rays, ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) may be helpful in the evaluation of disease severity and complications. In this context, the aim of this review is to explore the actual role of diagnostic imaging in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis, underlining advantages and drawbacks providing information about the utilization of diagnostic imaging techniques in this context. Furthermore, we aim to provide a useful guide regarding imaging features of schistosomiasis for radiology and nuclear medicine physicians of non-endemic countries: in fact, in the last years non-endemic countries have experienced important flows of migrants from endemic areas, therefore it is not uncommon to face cases of this disease in daily practice

    Different sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids affects apparent digestibility, tissue deposition, and tissue oxidative stability in growing female rats

    Background Numerous health benefits associated with increased omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) consumption has lead to an increasing variety of available n-3 PUFA sources. However, sources differ in the type, amount, and structural form of the n-3 PUFAs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of different sources of ω-3 PUFAs on digestibility, tissue deposition, eicosanoid metabolism, and oxidative stability. Methods Female Sprague-Dawley rats (age 28 d) were randomly assigned (n = 10/group) to be fed a high fat 12% (wt) diet consisting of either corn oil (CO) or n-3 PUFA rich flaxseed (FO), krill (KO), menhaden (MO), salmon (SO) or tuna (TO) oil for 8 weeks. Rats were individually housed in metabolic cages to determine fatty acid digestibility. Diet and tissue fatty acid composition was analyzed by gas chromatography and lipid classes using thin layer chromatography. Eicosanoid metabolism was determined by measuring urinary metabolites of 2-series prostaglandins (PGs) and thromoboxanes (TXBs) using enzyme immunoassays. Oxidative stability was assessed by measuring thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) using colorimetric assays. Gene expression of antioxidant defense enzymes was determined by real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results Rats fed KO had significantly lower DHA digestibility and brain DHA incorporation than SO and TO-fed rats. Of the n-3 PUFA sources, rats fed SO and TO had the highest n-3 PUFAs digestibility and in turn, tissue accretion. Higher tissue n-3 LC-PUFAs had no significant effect on 2-series PG and TXB metabolites. Despite higher tissue n-3 LC-PUFA deposition, there was no increase in oxidation susceptibility indicated by no significant increase in TBARS or decrease in TAC and gene expression of antioxidant defense enzymes, in SO or TO-fed rats. Conclusions On the basis that the optimal n-3 PUFA sources should provide high digestibility and efficient tissue incorporation with the least tissue lipid peroxidation, TO and SO appeared to be the most beneficial of the n-3 PUFAs sources evaluated in this study
