Shuttle STS-2 mission communication systems RF coverage and performance predictions. Volume 1: Ascent
The RF communications capabilities and nominally expected performance for the ascent phase of the second orbital flight of the shuttle are provided. Predicted performance is given mainly in the form of plots of signal strength versus elapsed mission time for the STDN (downlink) and shuttle orbiter (uplink) receivers for the S-band PM and FM, and UHF systems. Performance of the NAV and landing RF systems is treated for RTLS abort, since in this case the spacecraft will loop around and return to the launch site. NAV and landing RF systems include TACAN, MSBLS, and C-band altimeter. Signal strength plots were produced by a computer program which combines the spacecraft trajectory, antenna patterns, transmit and receive performance characteristics, and system mathematical models. When available, measured spacecraft parameters were used in the predictions; otherwise, specified values were used. Specified ground station parameter values were also used. Gravitational hydrodynamics of large scale structure formation
The gravitational hydrodynamics of the primordial plasma with neutrino hot
dark matter is considered as a challenge to the bottom-up cold dark matter
paradigm. Viscosity and turbulence induce a top-down fragmentation scenario
before and at decoupling. The first step is the creation of voids in the
plasma, which expand to 37 Mpc on the average now. The remaining matter clumps
turn into galaxy clusters. Turbulence produced at expanding void boundaries
causes a linear morphology of 3 kpc fragmenting protogalaxies along vortex
lines. At decoupling galaxies and proto-globular star clusters arise; the
latter constitute the galactic dark matter halos and consist themselves of
earth-mass H-He planets. Frozen planets are observed in microlensing and
white-dwarf-heated ones in planetary nebulae. The approach also explains the
Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, and cosmic microwave temperature
fluctuations of micro-Kelvins.Comment: 6 pages, no figure
Lifetimes of antiferromagnetic magnons in two and three dimensions: experiment, theory, and numerics
A high-resolution neutron spectroscopic technique is used to measure
momentum-resolved magnon lifetimes in the prototypical two- and
three-dimensional antiferromagnets Rb2MnF4 and MnF2, over the full Brillouin
zone and a wide range of temperatures. We rederived theories of the lifetime
resulting from magnon-magnon scattering, thereby broadening their applicability
beyond asymptotically small regions of wavevector and temperature.
Corresponding computations, combined with a small contribution reflecting
collisions with domain boundaries, yield excellent quantitative agreement with

A highly efficient two level diamond based single photon source
An unexplored diamond defect centre which is found to emit stable single
photons at a measured rate of 1.6 MHz at room temperature is reported. The
novel centre, identified in chemical vapour deposition grown diamond crystals,
exhibits a sharp zero phonon line at 734 nm with a full width at half maximum
of ~ 4 nm. The photon statistics confirm the center is a single emitter and
provides direct evidence of the first true two-level single quantum system in

Tight constraints on the existence of additional planets around HD 189733
We report a transit timing study of the transiting exoplanetary system HD
189733. In total we observed ten transits in 2006 and 2008 with the 2.6-m
Nordic Optical Telescope, and two transits in 2007 with the 4.2-m William
Herschel Telescope. We used Markov-Chain Monte Carlo simulations to derive the
system parameters and their uncertainties, and our results are in a good
agreement with previously published values. We performed two independent
analyses of transit timing residuals to place upper mass limits on putative
perturbing planets. The results show no evidence for the presence of planets
down to 1 Earth mass near the 1:2 and 2:1 resonance orbits, and planets down to
2.2 Earth masses near the 3:5 and 5:3 resonance orbits with HD 189733b. These
are the strongest limits to date on the presence of other planets in this

RISE: a fast-readout imager for exoplanet transit timing
By the precise timing of the low amplitude (0.005 - 0.02 magnitude) transits
of exoplanets around their parent star it should be possible to infer the
presence of other planetary bodies in the system down to Earth-like masses. We
describe the design and construction of RISE, a fast-readout frame transfer
camera for the Liverpool Telescope designed to carry out this experiment. The
results of our commissioning tests are described as well as the data reduction
procedure necessary. We present light curves of two objects, showing that the
desired timing and photometric accuracy can be obtained providing that
autoguiding is used to keep the target on the same detector pixel for the

Lunar resources: Oxygen from rocks and soil
The first set of hydrogen reduction experiments to use actual lunar material was recently completed. The sample, 70035, is a coarse-grained vesicular basalt containing 18.46 wt. percent FeO and 12.97 wt. percent TiO2. The mineralogy includes pyroxene, ilmenite, plagioclase, and minor olivine. The sample was crushed to a grain size of less than 500 microns. The crushed basalt was reduced with hydrogen in seven tests at temperatures of 900-1050 C and pressures of 1-10 atm for 30-60 minutes. A capacitance probe, measuring the dew point of the gas stream, was used to follow reaction progress. Experiments were also conducted using a terrestrial basalt similar to some lunar mare samples. Minnesota Lunar Simulant (MLS-1) contains 13.29 wt. percent FeO, 2.96 wt. percent Fe2O3, and 6.56 wt. percent TiO2. The major minerals include plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, ilmenite, and magnetite. The rock was ground and seived, and experiments were run on the less than 74- and 500-1168-micron fractions. Experiments were also conducted on less than 74-micron powders of olivine, pyroxene, synthetic ilmenite, and TiO2. The terrestrial rock and mineral samples were reduced with flowing hydrogen at 1100 C in a microbalance furnace, with reaction progress monitored by weight loss. Experiments were run at atmospheric pressure for durations of 3-4 hr. Solid samples from both sets of experiments were analyzed by Mossbauer spectroscopy, petrographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, tunneling electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Apollo 17 soil 78221 was examined for evidence of natural reduction in the lunar environment. This sample was chosen based on its high maturity level (I sub s/FeO = 93.0). The FeO content is 11.68 wt. percent and the TiO2 content is 3.84 wt. percent. A polished thin section of the 90-150 micron size fraction was analyzed by petrographic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy
Did aid promote democracy in Africa?: the role of technical assistance in Africa’s transitions
Did foreign aid impede or catalyze democratization in Africa in the 1990s? We argue that after the Cold War, donors increased their use of technical assistance in aid packages, improving their monitoring capacity and thus reducing autocrats’ ability to use aid for patronage. To remain in power, autocrats responded by conceding political rights to their opponents—from legalizing opposition parties to staging elections. We test our theory with panel data for all sub-Saharan African countries. While other factors played pivotal roles in Africa’s political liberalization, we find technical assistance helps to explain the timing and extent of Africa’s democratization
